hurc Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 Oh yes, that looks pretty nice!!! Btw,will you update then all terrain textures for the range? Thanks Soulman , Yes, I am doing the target areas too. I'm leaning towards renaming it to make it a whole new range terrain from the original not just a overwrite of the current range. Are 2 range terrains too many ? What about "Nellis Range" or "Desert Range" ? Quote
+Soulfreak Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 That sound really good! I´m not a terrain guru, but would it be possible to implement into the old range some mountain areas?? Quote
Wrench Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 yes, it wouldn't be too hard with repainting parts of the HFD; if one can get it into the TE ... would need the textureset list and such like to retile if needed Quote
+allenjb42 Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 'Nellis Range' sounds great. Is there somewhere for the Aggressor jets to fly from or do they use the second runway? Quote
hurc Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 (edited) 'Nellis Range' sounds great. Is there somewhere for the Aggressor jets to fly from or do they use the second runway? I downloaded the old terrain editor, but dont really know how to use it, If somebody wants to add "Sunrise Mountian" just SE of Nellis that would be great! Right now there are just alot of large rolling sand dunes/small foothills. Maybe even flatten up the area West for a Las Vegas Strip! Right now I have drones taking off from the Mockup Airfield at the target area, and they do launch as nice targets when you do a Fighter Sweep or CAP type. I have 2 enemys in the limited nations.ini, "Range", which are what most drones are set as and "AGRS" for aggressor A/C. For some reason the A/I never sends up an Agressor, only a drone. Have to figure that one out still. The second runway is just for show as it stands now. The problem is with A/I aggressors using it, they will takeoff and be shooting down friendlies right over Nellis, LOL. Edited November 4, 2011 by hurc Quote
+Spectre_USA Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 This looks mighty fine! As a former frequent visitor to the LOLA area on the other side in the late 80's, early 90's, I gotta say, looking good. I reckon the range is out in the vicinity of Indian Springs, now Creech, which would be a tad close for aggressors. Long drive, however, in mid-summer in a GOV with no A/C... Quote
+SkateZilla Posted November 10, 2011 Posted November 10, 2011 Nellis AFB/Training Range has a nice ring to it.. Quote
hurc Posted November 10, 2011 Author Posted November 10, 2011 Nellis AFB/Training Range has a nice ring to it.. Thanks, I'm going with "Nellis Range" at this point. Fixed the Aggressors not being encountered, just a typo in my nations ini. But they still have just the Range Airfield to T/O from at this point. If you decide to fight on their side they get taken out with a BVR missile by most of the allied opponents soon after launch. I need a Aggressor F-15 to add to the mix and even the odds or Nerf all the A-A ord or something. If there was another flat area at the top of the map I could add Fallon NAS up there or something to give more of the correct scale for a Red Flag environment. Hurc Quote
+SkateZilla Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 if only we had crazy intense AI flights randomly landing and taking off like other sims........ :p Quote

Only problem is I never have used the terrain editor. I just do object placement and texture editing to get the results I have to date. Who would like to flatten out the north west corner of the range terrain for me ? Thanks, Hurc Edited November 11, 2011 by hurc Quote
Icarus999 Posted November 11, 2011 Posted November 11, 2011 I think that the range terrain is too small for this, your work is excellent and deserves to be part of a more grand terrain... just my opinion. I think that an eastward expanded version of the Socal terrain would be more fitting for something this cool. Quote
hurc Posted November 11, 2011 Author Posted November 11, 2011 (edited) if only we had crazy intense AI flights randomly landing and taking off like other sims........ :p Guess what, I do have AI flights (I'm talking Randomly Generated, not a user made mission) taking off before, during and after my Player flight starts on the runway. If you choose a strike mission, its a good chance the AI will launch a SEAD plus an Escort flight to go with you. You can't control what they do, but you feel like you are part of a Strike Package, not just a solo day to day bombing practice mission. They all use the same runway so its an odd effect to have an F-15 flight taxi "thru" and past your own A/C then go on its mission. Edited November 11, 2011 by hurc Quote

But, that will require a Whole Lot of Work. Nellis is not even on the Blue Side of the friendly/enemy list. Almost a complete redesign would be needed. Will still think about that as a future option. I started out to just stick a new airfield into the original Range, but got a bit carried away, LOL. Help me Obiwan, Quote

What ELSE might you have to add to the SoCal terrain ? Actually, That fits with a Navy/USMC vs USAF sort of scenario as the Marines Aggressor unit is out of Yuma I believe. Hurc I noticed the date on that just now, 2007 ? WOW! Edited November 11, 2011 by hurc Quote

Yep, VMFT-401 Snipers out of Yuma, VFC-13 Saints out of Fallon, and 64th & 65th out of Nellis, the scenario would have more than ample Red forces. Those bases were modeled a few years ago now and have been on hold since. I have also started on Miramar, Groom & TTR with plans for Creech and AOF at Yucca Lake. Quote

hurc Posted November 11, 2011 Author Posted November 11, 2011 (edited) And how do you do that? It happened by accident, LOL. I was trying to add more varied "Parked A/C" that the game engine randomly generates, so I made a second "fake runway" but use the exact same coordinates as the real runway. Guess what, as long as you set your "squadrons=##" value it will generate parked A/C like I had planned. What I didn't expect was it would generate AI missions as well! And since friendly A/C can't collide, at least on the runway as far as I've seen, the AI flights spawn and take off as they please! So, Nellis, as I've built it, is like 6 airbases in one. No terrain objects needed except for the "real" airfield, the rest are unseen, use the same runway and parking coords, and they generate AI flights. I cant take all the credit for this, ChampionsVA56, who made the Mescalero Range mod has the "fake runway" in his terrain. I didnt know what it was used for. I think it is for his second Drone Launch Airfield, yet he uses terrain objects in addition to the hidden fake runway. Edited November 11, 2011 by hurc Quote

It generates AI missions because of the fake runway. It counts as another airbase. But did you just declare another runway entry in the airbase target ini data, or it an whole another airbase in the terrains' taget ini? Now I would be curious to see that. Ability to generate some AI trafficv in the same airbase would be realkly interesting, and should be added to all the terrains Quote

Ability to generate some AI trafficv in the same airbase would be realkly interesting, and should be added to all the terrains You need 3 things to work, at least how I got it working; 1 a "Fake Runway" in the types.ini (no LOD object assigned to it) 2 a target entry in the targets.ini for each fake airfield (as well as the real one) 3 a airfield layout ini file, the one with the takeoff/landing points, parking spots, lights, etc. for each fake airfield as well as your main airfield of course. So I have the main Nellis AFB in targets.ini using Runway2600, or whatever its named in the types.ini, then several more airfields in the targets.ini using the fake runway for object001 and thats all. They all use the exact coordinates and headings as if they are stacked on top of each other on the terrain. I get mixed results as far as what AI flights spawn, but usually get an escort or SEAD type coming along on the mission if I choose a Strike mission type. Next - Trying to figure out how to get Ramp Starts Edited November 12, 2011 by hurc Quote
hurc Posted November 13, 2011 Author Posted November 13, 2011 More WIP - Range Control Facility is a friendly location and when flying a CAS the enemy armor will be attacking towards it. BAF gave me an escort on one strike mission - Thanks! Quote
