Convair Model 201 Shipboard Fighter

Convair Model 201 for Strike Fighters 2

----------------------------------------------

What this is :

This is the CTOL version of Convair's Model 200 VSTOL entry for the Sea Control Ship fighter competition of the early 70's. It also reappeared later as GD Model 218 during the VFAX competition which ultimately ended up as the F-18.

There are quite a number of artist's impressions and 3-view floating around, of which most ones show a more pointy delta planform and underwing Sidewinders. That would be the earlier iterations, which by 1975 or so would have evolved into what you see here.

The original documentation only mentions 2 AIM-9 + 2 AIM-7 but I added 2 underwing and a centerline station because it makes the plane a bit more fun to use and isn't totally implausible.

----------------------------------------------

More Stuff:

It uses sounds from SF2E so your mileage may vary :o

----------------------------------------------

Known Issues:

None, really.

Nice plane! Great work!

Didn't know that this was proposed for VFAX. makes me wonder why they chose the F-18 over this... oh wait they picked the f-18 over the F-14. bunch of idiots.

It's completely different from the 50's pit in the Draken. The best fit for that would F-105 pit.

You´re right but the cockpit structure is much closer than F-105. The Convair´s instrumentation is much modern I know, but all in all it´s a better fit. I painted my example with the SAAB green replacing the grey areas and it realy looks terrific. Give a try!

And just a note, the A2G pipper should be where the A2A pipper is located, the current pipper is way too high for A2G work.

The plane is very nice and the cockpit is awesome, but I have some doubts about it:

- In the cockpit folder there are some instruments bmps with keys instead knobs below the HUD. Is it an optional cockpit? I tried to use it renaming the bmps, but the knobs are still there on top of the keys.

- I can´t use the RWR displaye, I hear the warnings but it shows nothing.

- what is the difference of the alternative data ini?

Congratulations and I hope you do more cockpits (and planes)

Those textures are for one of the earlier iterations of the cockpit which unfortunately was on my external HDD that died.

I think the alternative data ini has fixed canards, don't remember. No idea why the RWR doesn't work. Never noticed it...
