+Typhoid Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Okay the Top one is not the Sub Hunter thats the AEW-3 Variant... in Ferry configuration as when they worked from the ship as AEW they only carried the drop tank on the left side if I remember correctly... Yep - AEW variant. The only kind that matters....... Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 British, probably mid-40's... prototype or only low-volume production I guess, the wings are not right for it to be a Blenheim modification, something to replace the Blenheim and Beaufighter perhaps ? I've never seen that one before. Quote
Derk Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Well, let's see if someone else has a clue until 24.00 hrs Zulu....... Quote
+MigBuster Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I do know but wont say because I cheated and used google Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Yep, finally gave in to curiosity too, that was a tricky one, I've learnt something today. Quote
Derk Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Blackburn Botha Craig Brave try, but nope...... Quote
Derk Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 OK, time is over: Miles M33 Monitor high speed target tug... (powered bij 2 definitely non British Wright engines....) Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 You have to admit that was a devious one... In the meantime, let me propose another.... Quote
fallenphoenix1986 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Well I tried to go through my library and trawled google... not coming up with much even though I'm sure I've seen it before :P Craig Quote
Atreides Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 So are we or we not allowed to use google for the really tough ones ? Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 (edited) I'd say you are allowed if you disclose it in your answer and you let other people have a go at it before, however I've been devious and you won't find that one, as-is, through Google Images. Ok, a small hint... It's a yugoslav bird (the tail can help you figure it), it's from the early/mid 50's and its manufacturer is now better known for manufacturing buses. Edited August 27, 2012 by Gunrunner Quote
Atreides Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Recognized this as a yugo bird by the tail pic which how I found it when I posted my question. Actually a simple gogle of Yugoslavian jet prototypes and wiki search paid off IKARUS 452M General characteristics Crew: One pilot Length: 5.97 m (19 ft 7 in) Wingspan: 5.25 m (17 ft 2 in) Height: 1.77 m (5 ft 9 in) Gross weight: 1,100 kg (2,420 lb) Powerplant: 2 × Turboméca Palas 056A, 1.5 kN (330 lbf) thrust each Performance Maximum speed: 780 km/h (466 mph) Endurance: 1 hours 15 min Quote
+Fates Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 Sounds like your next....have at it! Quote
Atreides Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Does this count ? Easy or far too vague ? If so let me know and can try to post something else. Dont have access to my books or mags for the cool stuff as reference since I'm in Dubai instead of home, Toronto. Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) I'm not so sure, I remember the original Su-9 as looking a lot like the Me-262, here the engines nacelles are closer to those on the Meteor, with a forward cockpit. Whatever it is it certainly counts. Damn, it's so evident three of us missed it entirely... Edited August 28, 2012 by Gunrunner Quote
Atreides Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) Not a SU-9. Gunrunner is close. Need a hint ? Edited August 28, 2012 by Atreides Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 It's obviously an I-215, but I have no bloody idea who manufactured it without having to resort to cheating sources. It's not Sukhoi, it's not a MiG, neither Tupolev nor Ilyushin... That leaves us with what ? A Lavochkin or Yakovlev I've never seen before (if it's one of those I'd say Lavochkin, it has that kind of grace) or one of the short-lived OKBs (most probably, but I can't remember any of these from the late 40's/early 50's). Quote
Atreides Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 OKB of Semyon Alekseev. Sadly even the two seater night fighter of this was never even flight tested as many claim that Yakovlev 's comment during a Kremlin meeting "just another copy of the ME-262" might have influenced Stalin when he decided to shutdown the OKB without even allowing flight testing of the I-212 as a result also the I-215. 1 Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Too bad, it had something of a Hawker design in it. Guess it's my turn since I was the closest... That one shouldn't be too difficult as it is very peculiar. Quote
fallenphoenix1986 Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Bartini Beriev VVA-14.... wierd looking brute. Quote
Gunrunner Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) Well done, I've always like it and the ekranoplanes, they're weird beasts but not entirely unattractive in their own ways. Your turn then... Edited August 28, 2012 by Gunrunner Quote
