The Future of Formosa Campaigns

Is there any interest for further Formosa Campaigns? I have just submitted 1.1 of Operation Formosa Freedom and I intend this to be the final version. I do however like the setting; and I got some time until my main project will start to take up my time again; depending on if I do one of the ideas I had in mind for TSF.

 

The general idea is something similar to TSF; a series of Campaigns that are connected in story and designed around a mod folder of its own. What are your toughs on this?

 

And above else; If I do any more, what time periods would you like to see?

Yes. Very yes.

The Pacific theater is very much my chief area of interest, and obviously I will accept any excuse to get big fleets of ships involved, and fight someone other than the Russians for a change.

 

The main thing I'd like to see is a semi-historical campaign based around the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis, in which the USN sent two CBGs, including the Nimitz and Independence. It very nearly lead to war, and if you're treating it like a continuation of your first Formosa Freedom campaign, that means there could be even heavier military buildup and some fierce fighting.

 

My question is, what do you need? Do you have the objects and aircraft you need to build the campaigns? The Nimitz is stock, most of the Seventh Fleet escorts and many of the PLAN ships are ready, but what about the Forrestal class? The only model I know of for it is around 7 years old. Oh, for a believable full-scale invasion of Taiwan there should be Yuting class assault ships to be big juicy targets-- If you're willing to wait a bit I'll see if I can throw one together.

I've been creating and playing Taiwan air campaigns ever since the days of Fighters Anthology, and I'd love to see something like TSF for Taiwan. I think we're still missing the F-CK-1 though, and a campaign set in the early to mid-90s (my ideal time period) would definitely need it. The Third Taiwan Strait Crisis is also a great topic as well.

Personally I like the idea of more over there as flying over Europe and mid-east gets stale after all these years... and I was planning on doing an update to mid 1970's as well

Checking some of the SF1 Chinese Birds; I came across this:

Does crushing their standing army, air force and navy in a simulator count as "use against"?

 

 

Current ideas:

First Taiwan Straight Crisis:

Mao dictates that Taiwan must be taken. Maybe a Communist Rebellion provides PRC with a beachhead. Lots of Propeller action, not much naval action (maybe just one or two ships).

 

Third Taiwan Straight Crisis

A good basis for a Campaign. Lots of naval combat, but the problem is that such a spontaneous crisis could never result in something as complex as an invasion. The US would not want to and the PLA would know better then to actually launch one against an alerted enemy .

 

China-Taiwan 2014/2015:

Skip the Baltic 2014 altogether and make a Formosa one on the same topic. Modern Chinese and Taiwan ships. Minimal US Support, maybe only a single Carrier Group with Super Bugs and two USAF Squadrons of F-22/F-35 with Taiwans F-16s. A-Team has the f*** One (as it will be referred to from now on) so I can use the AlternateSquadron Line to add it for people who has the actual aircraft. Story would probably involve oil. War in the next twenty years will most likely revolve around this; esp considering current quite good relations between PRC & ROC. Would if possible contain one of these, pref with J-10 or J-15.

 

At this point in time; I would humbly not even want to look at a Campaign including a F-4 Phantom, so any 60-70-80 is completely up to somebody else. I am a little tired of that aircraft, that is all. Nothing personal.

The 70s would be an interesting year in that theater. I think the ROC first got the Tiger II in 1973, and of course China was already mass-producing J-6 and J-7. Also, it might be fun to have a 1980s campaign set around the premise, "what if Taiwan bought the F-20 Tigershark?"

As to a 1970's 1980's campaign the F-4 doesn't even have to be involved as you would have Carriers with Tomcats A-7 and A-6 and ground would be all Taiwanese Air

Amongst others...

 

So it could be a fun fight as you get USN or Taiwan Easy to rule out the USAF stating that North Korea is causing trouble... and the decision was made Air Force to Japan and Korea to reinforce them (infrastructure is already in Place) and USN to Taiwan and to keep and F-4 Fliegers happy stick a squadron of F-4S in USN style.

Hi all. I'm testing a 1975 campaign at the moment. China invades as the US Navy is depleted and assisting with Operation Frequent Wind, but 3 carriers are re-routed including USS Enterprise and the first operational Tomcat squadrons. Australia sends a Mirage squadron and HMAS Melbourne.

 

I have strategic nodes running up and down the Western coast of the island, and 5 missions in it seems to be playing out well. Unfortunately, I don't know when I could say the campaign is ready. Testing is slow going as real-life is very hectic for my family right now. Flying 2 missions in a row was a rare treat for tonite. :P

 

The campaign does need my modified targets.ini as I have added 3 off-map airbases to accommodate more PLAAF bombers.

 

If anyone is interested in looking at what I have done, I could post it here. Not ready for the download section I'm afraid.

Addons include obvious stuff, like Q-5, F-5A and E etc.

I'd be very interested in more Pac fleet action. There's a lot of Atlantic Fleet stuff available, but not much for Pac fleet. I'd be all over it.

 

Also, if you need, I can skin some 'cats for you. For the 3rd Formosa Crisis, VF-211 and VF-154 are already on my short list.
