That working as fast as we can, also true for the BN skin on my side :)

Oh yes, I'm not naive about release dates. ASAP = As soon as possible. :biggrin: But the first version is mostly just Thirdwire assets + already released planes and skins. So I might go with the already released albeit slightly incorrect Su-20 if that means getting something out of the door faster for the community to play with, I favor an incremental approach, I does not have to be perfect for a public release. JonathanRL I think did this well, we got releases early and they spurred the development of further assets until there was a pretty damn complete package that adhers to his original vision.

So, early version first with what I got (in 1980 neither the MiG-25 nor Mirage F.1EQ were operational). Then, for the next version, maybe the new Su-20 is ready, and maybe even the new Mirage F.1 and/or my MiG-25PD/RB. This certainly gives me incentive to work on those projects.

Regarding the terrain Wrench, it is already very much good to go (thanks to you)! My visual tweaks will also be incremental but the basic tile changes are already 80% done. Then I will tweak it more and more for each version.

don't forget to put in the readme that I gave my OK ... just so the Admins are cool with it!! :biggrin: (there's a notification in the uploads instruction here to that effect)

i'm looking forward to seeing what these changes look like close up!

You need to have a lot more mountain tiles. Right now the tiling is much too apparent.

Yeah I have noticed that too Jules, but I favor an incremental approach, so basic stuff before fancy pants editing. With the current system making really nice looking mountains is nigh impossible anyways, but I will try my best!

or pick up different mountain tile for the err... mountain tile, as you use my Israel set there were some other too, this one you choosed had that prominent ridge featured in them, seen clearly when repeated

Ah you meant the mountain tile, not the snowy ones :biggrin:

Yes, I'll try some other tile to see if there is less repetitive-ness. BTW the TFD tool is awesome. Once I'm done with this imma gonna make me some islands for the archipelago in the Sweden map :biggrin:

Is there anyway to edit the heightmap without losing resolution? Do i need TE for that?

Share on other sites

yes I did some experiments with that, resize the heightmap bmp (first you need to export it from TE menu) to x2 and add some noise to mountainous areas for example... then re-export, WHOLE SF2 map can be created in paint program, for those who were wondering. And yes, Gerwin did SUPER job on his tool

OK, is there really no resolution loss with import-export in TE? Seems a 256 color bitmap would not hold super much info, compared to say similar sized 16bit PNG? I tried it and the height was really different when I reimported after adding some noise. Need to test out some more i gather..

Actually each of the 256 colors represents a height, I think that for TE difference between each height is 50m so that gives you 50*256=12800m height that being more than enough for any part of the Earth...

but the engine wont handle Mount Olympus, there is some difference between physical bmp representation of heightmap output and the way engine renders it

The way is to export/import the TE HM palette, and yes, it's still 256

Hi Centurion,

Importing/exporting heightmap data can be done in TE, then the terrain resized in photoshop or whatever and re-imported to TE.

Remember you have to set the [bitmapExport] and [bitmapImport] values in the TerrainEditor.ini file or you will get mountain peaks chopped off, depending on the terrain you are working with.

These values should be calculated by measuring the maximum peak height on your map (in metres) and dividing by 256 to give the Heightscale= value.

There will be some loss of detail, as TE can only read 256 height "steps."

A higher Heightscale value will make sure you get all your high mountain peaks, but it will result in a loss of definition at lower altitudes.

You can demonstrate this by creating a raw terrain from DEM data in TE, then exporting and importing the bitmaps in TE, and flying over mountainous parts of each version to see the difference in detail.

To get Olympus in properly, I guess you would have to set the Heightscale value to 2917/256=11.39, then round it up to 12.

Remember also, that in TE you can set the Heightscale parameter as a percentage of real life heights when translating raw DEM data into a terrain heightmap.

I tend to fix it at 110 or even 120% of real life, as it makes mountains that little bit more mountainous for game purposes.

Hope that helps.

Slainthe!

Baltika

PS, for a detailed discussion of how all this works, see this thread:-

Thanks for the tip Baltika, seems it might be a bit out of the scope of this mod, for now at least. The thing is, if eliminating the jagged airbase edges means losing definition otherwise, I might have to live with the airbase edges.

I wish there was a fill function in the TFD editor, would make editing large areas a lot easier.

Also, there are two problems with my current map: On some tiles, mostly the mountain ones, the trees are flying. Why?

Then, there are visible borders between water tiles even though they are the exact same water color, seems to be related to the water normalmap somehow, there was discussion about in the ODS thread but didn't really understand it.

Blackbird is right

I'm working on F-5EZ (Azarakhsh) I have all things done And now I just need RWR receivers

Blackbird told me I'm going to build them but He don't until now

This is the pics of my F-5EZ:

And a thing is that Iranian F-14's skin was varied that time

They like TMF F-14A IRIAF not that you use

The skin you are using is very light

And I know that there is a F-5N with RWR but F-5EZ is different

On some tiles, mostly the mountain ones, the trees are flying. Why?

happens a lot on terrains built with the derst (SF1) TE

do this in the data ini:

DepthBufferCheck=TRUE

DepthBufferWrite=FALSE

RenderedInOrder=TRUE

AlphaTestEnabled=TRUE

CullMode=NO_CULL

ZBufferOffset=2.000000

BlendOp=BLEND_SRC_ALPHA

NumTextureStages=1

TextureStage[01].TextureName=

TextureStage[01].MipMap=TRUE

TextureStage[01].FilterEnabled=TRUE

TextureStage[01].StageColorOp=TEXTURE_MODULATE_DIFFUSE

TextureStage[01].StageAlphaOp=TEXTURE

comment out the fx line

I wouldn't worry about the shelters ... this is where some peoples lack of understanding of the mechanics fo the game hurt things.

those would have be NEW 3d objects (terrain objects), bult in MAX, exported, skinned and then hand-placed on the map like every other of that type of object.

when I rebult it, it's a accurate as possible to Real World as the game engine (allows). And the crappy tile system.

Looking good Flogger! Some weathering and dirt and it will look great!

The BN looks awesome! Got any ETA on that one?

Morteza thx for the info, right now I might not be able to change map objects, maybe further down the road once more pressing issues are out of the way.

Yeah Martin anything relating to IRIAF or IRAF is welcome

Wrench I'll try to comment out that and see if that fixes it.

      Notes about the installer
      Beware, the mod is available only in the ISO format. You can either mount it on a virtual drive, burn it on a DVD like in the good old days, or unzip it with 7-Zip or equivalent software.
      The installer will automatically detect your installation of the required Strike Fighters 2 games by reading through the registry keys. Game folders that are copied from or manually moved from where they were originally installed are not supported. You need all three aforementioned Strike Fighters 2 games and they must be installed with ThirdWire's original installers, not manually copied from other sources nor moved elsewhere after installation to other folders or drives. If you do not meet any of these requirements, installation cannot proceed and you are on your own. If you install all required games properly, the installation of the mod will proceed correctly as intended. The installer then lets you choose where to install the mod folder; you can even install the mod on a different drive or partition than the one where Strike Fighters 2 is installed. No further user input nor manual edits after installation are ever required; the installer takes care of creating all proper links to your desired path for the mod folder. After installation is over, simply run the mod by using the created Desktop and/or Start Menu links.
      If you have a previous version of the mod installed, please use the uninstaller to remove it completely. Clean installation is mandatory. You might want to make a backup of the Controls folder, so that you can easily restore your controller settings afterwards.

      Suggestions on common issues
      Make sure that you are using your dedicated GPU. By default, Strike Fighters 2 usually selects the integrated GPU you may have on your CPU, which is much weaker in terms of VRAM. In case you have frequent crashes or black/missing textures, I highly suggest you download and install the DXVK graphics wrapper (x86 DLLs) into your Strike Fighters 2 game folder: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk. You need a Vulkan-compatible GPU. The wrapper can greatly improve the experience with the mod. With DXVK I can play the mod on a mere Intel UHD 710, whereas without it the mod would always crash to desktop. Go to Sound and set Sound Channels to 32. We got reports that 16 is not enough and will cause crashes on some systems, due to the higher quality sounds included within the mod. The mod is pretty heavy for the game engine despite huge optimizations. Strike Fighters 2's engine is 32bit only and apparently does not manage VRAM properly; consecutive campaign missions might show black/missing textures on objects or cause crashes to desktop because the game does not release the occupied VRAM from the previous mission you played, thus the more missions are loaded consecutively, the more easily you may run out of memory. Set Ground Objects to Medium or Low, Horizon Distance to Near, and Shadows to Medium or Low. These are the most troubling settings. Avoid Unlimited settings as much as possible. If the mod used to work and suddenly crashes to desktop, updating or reinstalling video drivers should help. Make sure that DirectX June 2010 Redistributables are also installed, they are included inside the ISO disk image of the mod. Inside the mod folder, you'll find some extra text files. "(Coalition Order of Battle)" should be of your interest; the mod's terrain covers the entirety of Iraq, at the cost of not having all of Saudi Arabia; this means that a number of important units are based on airbases that are beyond the in-game playable area. With those units you always spawn near the target area, you'll never get to start from a runway nor to land on the assigned runway beyond the invisible wall. You have an entire list of the affected units in the aforementioned text file. By pressing ALT+N, the plane returns to base automatically. The mod is fully compatible with the Campaign Customizer and Mission Editor DLCs by ThirdWire. The Campaign Customizer might be an alternative way to experience those off map units I mentioned previously, since it assigns you to a random airbase of the in-game flyable area. Escort missions are often broken, this is not an issue of the mod, but a bug of the stock game; sometimes the AI flight you escort does not engage its target and keeps flying in a straight line instead of following waypoints, thus the trigger for mission success will never happen. Abandon the mission or retry it if the issue happens, sometimes it works. Pray for ThirdWire AKA Tsuyoshi Kawahito to work on a 64bit version of Strike Fighters 2, maybe even with support for DirectX 12. With that done, any out of memory issues should become an old memory. Can anyone help me with this campaign for ICELAND02 V2?
      I took an existing Campaign for ICelandNA, edited all the bases to existing bases in ICELAND02, changed the strategic points too, to the same or similar locations on both maps, but when I go to start it, the aircraft/squadron I chose is run over and the game puts me in a random Hawkeye.
      Before I changed all the bases, etc., effectively converting one terrain to another, just changing the terrain from one to another, the campaign started normally without any problems regarding the aircraft/squadron I chose, the only problem was that after a single mission the campaign ended. , saying that the strategic objectives had been achieved.

      I've attached the files below, if anyone can test them and eventually help me, that would be cool.
      If there is a campaign already made for ICELAND02 V2 and someone has it, I would also be grateful.

      Hi everyone,
      I was wondering how to customize the numbers after your callsigns, since it always gives me the same ones.
      I think i managed somehow once, a bit of time ago, but now i forgot and have no idea how to.
      I'm not talking about how to customize the callsign name, but the unit number after it.
      As you can see in the Roster and in the picture under, i get "Fast Eagle 1-1" and "Fast Eagle 1-2"
      Here are some examples:

      The numbers on the tail, wing and nose numbers are customized, cause i managed how to change them, choosing them individually for each unit in the mission file by changing "AircraftNumber=" and typing the number, like "2" (as for 202). It doesn't change by typing the whole number tho, like 202 by typing 202, but it goes by typing the number that corresponds to the list of numbers you have. For example, In a list that goes from 200 to 400, you will have to type 10 to get 300. Here i just typed "2" and "7" since the list starts from 200

      IIRC, in the past i just used to type the Aircaft number just like that, and in-game i had the proper number after the callsign, like "Fast Eagle 102", not just the number displayed on the plane livery.
      How do i do? I'm pretty sure that it's possible to have "Fast Eagle 102" on my screen HUD and in the Roster
      Thanks in advance for helping me.

      Guys, despite the supply limit being FALSE, dates checked and everything else, I can't make the weapons appear on the weapon selection screen.
      Only few weapons appear, like fuel tanks, some bombs and etc... any tips?
