I wrote a tool that someone may find useful: a LOD viewer.
I tested it on Windows 7 and 8. Unfortunately it doesn't run on Windows XP.

From the readme.txt:

LODViewer Version 0.1

Author: mue

Use at your own risk. The program is free for personal, non-commercial use.

Usage:

LOD files are loaded with File->Open...
The program also tries to read the ini file with the same basename (eg. tank.lod -> tank.ini) for textureset information. The texture directory can then be selected via the texture directory combo box. If no ini file is found or it does not contain textureset information then the texture files are assumed in the lod file directory.

The left upper window shows the node structure: node names and material ids. Nodes can be selected with left click and deselected with ctrl+left click.

The lower left window shows the texture file names of the materials.

The right graphic window displays the 3D view of the lod object. The view can be manipulated with the mouse:

rotation: left click + move
translation: right click + move
zoom: mouse wheel
reset view: middle click

Nodes can be selected with ctrl+left click, and deselected with ctrl+left click on a blank area.
Selected nodes are highlighted in red. Nodes whose texture couldn't be read are displayed in green.

Known issues, missing features, bugs:

-simplistic lighting (no specular, glossiness, reflection, bump mapping,...)
-no transparency
-no decals
-problems with reading some tga files

Holy crap this tool is great. Thanks mue.

Does this mean we no longer have to 100% rely on the .out files?

of course, reading the history so far it might just not work for people named Kevin.....

Gentlemen, I'm getting at least two sources on my computer that says this is malware.  Can any of our established members who aren't afraid of possible malware evaluate this thing?

Alrighty folks, several members (including myself) are saying that their anti-virus software reports this as malware.

The download link has been removed until a 'clean' version can be evaluated as safe.

Mue, we hope you can provide us with a better version for folks to use...or find an upload site that is less questionable.

FastCargo could it be the file hosting site, it tricked me into downloading a "download.exe" which's around 1MB in size.

The tool itself is a .zip ~7.3MB.

Been running it to check component assignments in the data inis and got no problem AV wise (MS essentials).

I was thinking that as well, that site seems a little...tricky.  We would be happy to host the file here at CA when we have a 'clean' copy of it.

unless it's uploaded somewhere safe(combatace for one) one can only come to the conclusion that it was uploaded to that site with the intention of causing a little mayhem. I'm going to have to sit through hours of scans and a possible restore thanks to this nonsense. I have years of navigating "nefarious' websites looking for files so I'm not some noob just randomly clicking links. If this wasn't done intentionally it certainly was damn irrisponsible.

Download the Zip file, not the EXE file which is also offered. The EXE file will be malware, or worse, in my experience.

The Zip file seems safe to me. I downloaded it, scanned for bad things and found none, and opened it.

The viewer itself works fine, on Gen1 or Gen 2 aircraft, and with either ANSI or Unicode files.

ok, then,

well why don't one of you that has the "non defective" file, upload the zip of the viewer to this thread as an attachment???

Scanned the LODviewer.zip/contents with MSE and Malwarebytes. Both record it as clean.

My personal advice, never, ever download or activate anything named 'download.exe'. I've seen too many of those and they're always dodgy as sh*t.

PS, I've been dying for something like this for years!!

now that its running,  wicked! i thank you, and the 3d modders might thank you (as i can stop askin what a given meshname is! )

interesting obseervation,  Veltro's 767 showed the skins, but A-37B and C-5 did not  those being items i have skinned recently

and C-130E DOES show the Euro 1 skin.  i know thats not original to the model

I've noticed that, of some of the skins don't immediately show, sometimes not even in the pull down menu. But if the skin is in the same folder as the lod, it should display automatically.

Mue, random question, but this will only show one lod at a time, yeah? ie, If I'm using a model with additional added elements like the Altas Cheetah, can I get the additional lods to show as well? Oh, and I love this, btw! Thanks!

Another Good Addon To The Toolbox.

I Use umc2v1.3 From John D Bradley aka Plastic Bonsai To View Early Generation Exported Lod's,
Picked It Up At Gulf Knights Airbase Site When It Was Available. Useless Except For One Critcal
Function. You Can Convert Less Complicated Lod's To Object.x And Import Into Lithunwrap 1.3 And
Then Export UV Maps. Brad Bolthouse Also Has A Hand In UltimateUnwrap3D Pro Which Claims To Unwrap
SF2 Lod's.

At The Point Where umc2v1.3 Crashes You Can Then Use 3D Object Converter By Zsolt Kárpáti
To Open The Next Generation Of Lod's But Like UltimateUnwrap3D You Will Have To Pay For Full
Function. Last I Checked 3D Object Converter Was At V4.80 Originally Found At 3DLinks.com A Site
With A Wealth Of Information.

Once You Get Up To The Level Of Lod Exporter With Bump Map Support This Utility Will Fail To Open
Lod's.

This Nifty Little New App Will Get A Foot In The Door Of The Next Generation Of Lod Exporters.

Nice Work mue !!

interesting .... it only seems to open LODs that already in a mods folder; ie: within an already existing aircraft folder.

As some may remember, there are NO lods in any of the object cats since one of the 2012 patchs. Many of us have archived extracted "pre lock" object cats.

This don't seem to open them from their extracted folders.

doesn't seem to have any issues opening a lod from WITHIN an in-game aircraft's folder, where all the inis and textures and so forth reside.

I downloaded the executive by mistake and Norten fogged a Trojan, but got a cleane Zip. This tool is awesome, I've been looking for a cockpit mesh name for years to remove a part, found it in ten seconds with this tool.

Hopping the. View rotation gets a refinement, also I can't select a texture folder? Everyone give mue a beer.
