Tacit Rainbow Guidance
ST0RM replied to Anthony W.'s topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It was meant as an ARM, with a loitering capability to wait for emitters to kick back on, then attack them. Currently there isnt an ability to do this. It's pretty much point and shoot. -S -
Anyone want to try the YF-17?
ST0RM replied to Dload's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
More than likely wanted someone else to do it for him. -
You aren't kidding about the AI!

That shouldnt be auctioned off to a private owner, but purchased by the country and placed on display. As much as I'd love to have it myself, this is something that needs to be shown to everyone. Maybe his diary could be released in book form. Would be an interesting read. That is awesome though! -S

I've still have and use my original TrackIR 1 since I bought it when they first came out. Only over the last few months have I stopped using it as much. My shift from FS2004 (where the VR cockpit flying rocks with TrackIR) to almost exclusively "flying" the TW sims, it's not needed as much. Bummer your attempt at building your own didnt work out, Vanessa. But never give up on the first go. -S

First thing that I thought of was how it could be applied to H.A.L.O. jumpers. Amazing video! That guy skimming the rack face was just sick! -S

Eraser, nice work on the X-32. While ugly, I do like the later version that was to have tailplanes, revised wing and a different intake. -S

I'm busy until Wednesday of next week, then I'll put a time and my Hamachi net here and see who can join up for some Co-op. Has anyone succesfully used the CA Teamspeak server lately? It wouldnt allow me to log in and locked my account last week. -S

Flight surfaces question
ST0RM replied to coolpilot's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Dang, this sucks. I was hoping to piggy-back off of this and add it to the KC-135's outboard ailerons. They lock out above 200kts when the outboard flaps come up fully. Roll is then controlled by the spoilers and inboard ailerons. Oh well... Great experiments though! -
Thank you for dedicating a server for the TW series. I hope it's used. On that, using mods has got to be a standardized affair. There was once a call to come together on what everyone would want for a M/P install, but it died like the interest for M/P did. When I fly M/P, it's with one person and using only vanilla (but patched to current standard). We havent had anymore show interest due to real life issues. Just look up in the M/P area and the threads are over 6 months old. Hamachi has worked well for most of us also. -S

Indian Air Force MiG-27 fleet upgrade complete
ST0RM replied to ghostrider883's topic in Military and General Aviation
That is awesome. Looks very modern and pilot friendly. The article didnt mention this, but how much longer do the IAF expect to keep the -27 in service? During the upgrade was the airframe SLEP'd or zero-out? With the avionics upgrade, do they or will they gain a precision weapons capability? -S -
"We will not tolerate this. We gave them enough time to purchase helmets. Six months ago the price of helmets was below 800 naira so complaints about non-availability and high prices are no excuse," Looks like I just found my new internet scam, err, umm... new investment market.

STRIKE FIGHTERS 2
ST0RM replied to Crusader's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Knowing the reputation of the Sparrow and early Sidewinders, I've adopted the technique of firing two missiles in rapid succession. I learned about this from reading actual Vietnam era pilots' report who did the same thing. After the double shot, they'd see if they hit or dumped. In the case of the latter, they'd fire again, wait, then fire the last if need be. I believe the Soviets did something similiar in that they popped off a radar missile, followed by an IR missile, hoping to catch the enemy in a depleted energy state after evading the radar shot. In the later days, they would shoot both radar missiles (AA-10) and keep the IR missiles for close in work. The philosophy behind this being that the heavy radar missiles were a hinderance to the jet's performance during close in fighting. Cant remember where or when I read about this, but it makes a lot of sense. A few things for you to consider. Or just move over to WoE where the missiles are much better ;) -S -
Throttlerate?
ST0RM replied to ST0RM's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Oh something I forgot to add in the first thread. I noticed the MF's Kfirs have a good amount of spool up time for their J-79s and looked at their entry as reference. It was THROTTLERATE=.12 So is a lower number, a higher time? Cheers! -
Throttlerate?
ST0RM posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Since I'm experimenting with MiG flying/fighting, I looked through the data.ini for the MiG-17F. Reading some of the statements from the pilots who flew the HAVE DRILL/FERRY Frescos about the jet's performance, I noticed that one pilot explained how he overcame the slow spool up time of the VK-1F engine. So into the data.ini I went and found the entry THROTTLERATE=.3 What does this equate to? The pilot said it took approx. 15 seconds bring it up from idle to full, so he kept it around 80% and used the boards often to regulate speed on the approach or as needed. What measurement is TK using for this? Seconds? Maybe we can add some new stuff to the KB in the advanced modding area. Thanks! Jeff -
I was given the Red Eagles book for Christmas by my awesome wife and have been reading it nearly every night. Well, for those of us who arent actual fighter pilots (or actively flying fighters anymore) and are interested in learning, it's not a bad way to teach yourself to fight a MiG or fight in a MiG. Will it make you the next Jabara, Cunningham or Ritchie? Probably not, but it will give you a few tips to enhance your virtual flying. So last night, Matt "Supercoupe" McKee and I did a little M/P over Hamachi. We set up in a 1v1 Dogfight using stock WoE w/the Nov 08 patch. At my request, he took the Eagle and I took the Fresco. I explained that I was reading the above mentioned book and wanted to try out all that I had read so far. We both got into the game and were started with a spread of approx. 10 miles, while each being level at 6k. At the merge, Matt went into a hard turn, as did I, knowing this to be an advantage in the MiG-17. Throughout the circle, I quickly got on his 6 and kept the pipper on his jet. Talking to him via phone (CA's Teamspeak server is not working BTW), I explained what I was doing and seeing, and he the same from his end. Keeping the MiG around 300-330kts, I had no trouble tracking the Eagle and called a guns kill, even though I didnt. We again separated to set up for another engagement, but this time I wanted Matt to use the vertical and superior power of the Eagle to keep me from getting a shot. Into the merge and up he went. I tried to climb as well but couldnt keep up. The VK-1F just doesnt have the push and the speed rapidly drained off. Instead of stalling, I rolled onto my back and tried to dive for the deck, hoping to lure the F-15 back into a low sepped turning fight. Having the height advantage, Matt easily picked my silver jet out from the surrounding sky and took the relatively simple guns kill. For our third setup, I asked him to Alt-D to get rid of the visual cheats and use only his radar and Mk.1 eyeballs to pick me up. This proved to be a bit more difficult as I intentionally stayed low and used the ground clutter to hide my jet. Banking it up to allow him a smaller side profile while he was high and keeping the jet in min-burner to keep from producing smoke. I ended up getting him into a turn and as he climbed to regain the advantage, was able to stay close enough to put some 37mm into his jet. A few more fights like this over the next hour or so and we ended the session 2 to 4 in his favor. But we both learned something and validated what guys like Jug, FC, Wags and a few other real-world pilots have been trying to explain. Plus we had a great time! Some key notes to pass along: - Keep the MiG-17 around 300-330kts. Any faster and you increase it's turn radius and negate any advantage you start with. - Against the Fresco, use the vertical and utilize slashing attacks. Boom & Zoom - Be patient. If you have a height advantage, dont be quick to drop in for a shot if it's not right. But if you do, keep your speed up in order to disengage at your leisure. What's next? More MiG flights. I'll probably follow the HAVE program and take the MiG-21F up for a few fights and learn about it. Of course one night in the MiG-17 doesnt make me an expert, so I keep "current" in it also. Hope you've enjoyed reading this, as much as we enjoyed flying it. Storm

Little Help Needed
ST0RM replied to Veltro2k's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Can you set them as separate animations? Like the ramp set to the bomb bay and the paradoors set to the hook function? Also, can you set the ramp to only open to the horizontal position and not full down. Makes for an airdrop config. Great work Ed! -Jeff -
Israeli Air Force Thread

Based upon current events or fiction? Precision strikes on vehicles hiding amongst buildings? -S -
I'll assume you added the new squadron to the SquadronList.ini and ensured that the Royal Navy is listed in the Nations.ini (although in all of the games, I think this is the same file) The decals for the Sea Vixen may be conflicting with the 101st Sqn's decals in the decal.ini for that skin, so it defaults to that. Or the decals arent in the correct location? Alot of variables to try, but I hope this helps you out a bit. -S

The tanks kind of remind me of the long range tanks carried by the Mirage 2000 and Rafale. Great progress Gents! -S -

Very sweet skin Alex! Looking forward to adding it to WoI. -Storm -
This is going to make quite a few Phantom lovers around here start drooling. Interesting reading. Thanks for the link. Hopefully we can take advantage and get some further tweaks for our Phantoms. -S
