  1. It simply adds shadows, which are known to be a bit of a frame-rate killer in this series. There are a few workarounds, such as setting them to "aircraft only", and limiting the distance at which they're cast to just under a hundred meters (arrrrgh...more stuff to add to the KB) As you've discovered, the latest patches place greater demands on your graphics adapter, due to the inclusion of volumetric clouds, and shaders for water and ground effects. You can turn these off in the game's options menu. It did so in my case, and yes, it is always a good idea to uninstall an older gfx driver before updating to a newer one. No! as I've mentioned before, you can always tune the graphics options to your preference, and the latest patches will not run without DX9.0c. LOL...shadows, of course...
  2. I'm currently using the Omega drivers, version 3.8.442, and they do not cause the "shadow" anomalies that you're experiencing. I also set my anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering manually (as opposed to application controlled). Here are my settings in the ATI control panel:
  3. Hmmmm...I believe that Wrench posted the loadout fix on the KB. Regarding the second one, you're referring to the MiG-21, right? That's a matter of moving the pilot forward in the cockpit section of the MiG-21's data.ini, IIRC, about .3 meters. From: Catalonia near the river that decided the future of Rome? I Thought the Douro was in southern Galicia... LOL
  4. Happy Brthday Dave..... You're still a bonehead..... J/K
  5. Are you volunteering? I'm sure that issue will be taken care of, soon enough.
  6. All that a jammer (in-game) would do is protect the object that's carrying it. It would not saturate the surrounding area with "noise". Keep in mind that home-on-jam capability is modeled quite well in this series. Another thought; If you managed to equip a ground target with a jammer, it would probably become a magnet for anti-radiation missiles.
  7. Do you have SFP1 (or, SF Gold)? Both titles include a small (desert) airfield, with a single runway on the order of 1000 meters or so.
  8. Polak's desert tiles on the default SF-desert terrain.
  9. Try rebooting before and after you apply the DX update.
  10. The answer to your problem is in the Knowledge Base.
  11. Now, you know that's not the best answer. If he were to follow your advice, he'd miss out on the intake animation and neat fuselage vortices effects, and, if he's anywhere as forgetful as I am, he might like verifying that his fuselage-mounted air brake was deployed, by seeing it in his rear-view mirrors
  12. Cockpits require that their positions be defined in all three axis within the 3D model's coordinates. Otherwise, one might experience some rather bizarre anomalies...
  13. Your C2D laptop has both cores operating at 2.2 gHz. There's no direct comparison with your older 1.4 notebook, as that may be anything from a P4, Pentium M, etc. For example If it's an older P4, just one of the cores on your 2.2 gHz C2D might be equivelent in performance to that same P4 running at 3.8-4.0 (or more) gHz!
  14. Define "wave movement". All the patched to date SF-based sims have "water effects" to an extent, though only if the terrain graphics options are set to high.
  15. There is a workaround, though it may appear tacky, and it may require you to redefine the ski-jump's (decks) collision coords. And that workaround, is to set the catapult's end point higher than its start point. The aircraft will then appear to be catapulted upwards at an angle. I've just tested this and it works.
