Stock terrains update and new effects pack
malibu43 replied to Stary's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Haven't had a chance to try the fix yet. Maybe this weekend. And that burning balloon effect looks great!!! -
Glad you're enjoying it Dave! Maybe I should add this to the readme... If you're flying USAF skyraiders, you could (or should) change out one of the 150 gal drop tanks for an SUU11, and replace the LAU-32's (on your aircraft only, not AI) with CBU-25's. I then challenge you to run out of ammo on a CAS or Armed_Recon mission.

Stock terrains update and new effects pack

Thanks for the buildings fix, CA_Stary. I'll give that a try later on. One other thing I noticed, is that some of the flak guns were giving off really big clouds of white smoke when they fire. The clouds also seemed to disappear very rapidly (especially for a cloud of that size). To me, it looked a little strange from the air, but maybe it's realistic and intentional. Sorry, I don't have a screen shot. Thanks again for the great mods!!! -
Copied from the File Announcement Thread, just as a heads up: FWIW - I have already enlisted comrpnt to write a couple "template" USNrecon missions that will be included in the final release version ofv2.0 of this expansion pack! Moving forward with this expansion pack, one of the things Eric and Ihave talked about doing is focusing on even more scripted singlemissions as the next step. This last release has put all the aircraft, objects, weapons, and effects in place. The next thing we plan on doingis putting them all to good use in some missions...

CA_Stary, I'm one of those that get the flashing problems unless I use the "Blend_SRC..." option instead of the "Blend_DST..." option. Using "Blend_SRC..." got rid of the flashing issues for me on this latest FE terrain update just like the WOx stuff, except for these "loner" buildings: The buildings visible in these pics are still flashing, even though trees and towns are fine. Any ideas why that would be happening? Thanks!

There are a TON of changes in v2.0. Like, a lot. Seriously... I can see if we can create some sort of upgrade package, but it would be complicated, as you'd have to go in and delete lots of individual files, folders, etc... Your best bet would be to back up your existing v1.0 folder, delete everything, and install v2.0. If there were things you had added to your install that are not in v2.0, go to your back up folder and re-install them. And thanks, Dave! That's a relief to not have to get all those permissions individually!

Hi all, v2.0 of the SF2V all-in-one pack is almost ready for release, and we've added a ton of stuff. A lot of the original creators are on the freeware list, but some are not. If your name is here, and you are or aren't OK with us using your work, please let me know (either in this thread or through a PM). Also if you know that one of these guys isn't around anymore (or that they will or will not be OK with us using their), let me know as well. Thanks!

It will work under a merged install, but I would recommend a separate SV2V install, just because we've tweak start and end dates, mission types, ground object dates, etc... to be specific to Vietnam. There are instructions in the knowledge base for setting up one install to use two different mod folders and a second copy of the .exe file. I've done that with this package, and that works too. Beta should be ready soon. Like, very soon. I would expect the full release in "two weeks"... Seriously, two weeds could be about right.

That is an excellent point that was missed. Desert Plus is an enhancement of the stock desert terrain in SFP1, SFGold, or SF2. It is NOT a stand alone terrain. You have to have one of the afore mentioned games to use that enhancement. There are several other 3rd party stand alone "desert" terrains in the downloads section that should work with SF2E.
-
This is a bit OT, but still related, I think... I followed the instructions in the KB to create a second .exe and mod folder for one SF2V install (copy the .exe and rename it, then run it once). I copied an un-merged SF2V install. When I run the regular Strike Fighters 2 Vietnam .exe, I get vietnam mission dates (1964-1975) with the vietnam main screen. However, when I run the renamed copy of the .exe (renamed to "V20"), I get the SF2 mainscreen and the available single mission dates are whatever the chosen aircraft is available for. So I can go from 1950 up into the mid 80's. Some of those same aircraft would be limited to 1964-1975 if it was I was running the SF2V .exe. What I'm thinking is that by renaming the .exe to something other than "Strike Fighters 2 XXXX", I've sort of confused the game. As a result, it defaults to the SF2 mainscreen and unlimited single mission years.

You should be able to go to the file you uploaded in the downloads section, and at the bottom there should be a link to click that says "edit this file". Click that, then replace the existing files with the ones you want to use. -

Looks great! BTW, weren't you also working on some new tiles and trees for WOE/SF2E 4 Seasons? -

Only if they're the primary target, though. Unless there's some super secret that you're holding out on... -
That is extremely helpful information. One flight a month should be totally do-able. Early on, I would definitely shoot for more to gain experience and help drill everything in. That is also a different perspective on starting in the winter - something I never thought about. I'll just have to ask the instructor then, about how solo hours are billed. Based on my calculations, the difference comes out to a few thousand dollars in the end. Thanks again!
-
One more question - After you solo, you need so many hours solo before you get your license. What is the instructor's role at that point? I'm looking at total cost and trying to figure out how many hours of the instructor I'd need to pay for. As long as I'm flying with the instructor, I'm basically assuming I'm charged for flight hours x 2, to account for brief and debrief (1/2 hour before hand, 1 hour flight, and 1/2 hour afterward). But I don't know what to assume once I solo... Thanks!

Had the demo flight yesterday after work. I was great! I had a good amount of time on the controls. Did some shallow and medium bank turns, and some cruise climbs and descents. I really like the instructor I had. But I'm still looking at the $$$ money part of this and making sure it's something I can commit to. I'm pretty sure I can get the money to get the license, but now I'm also trying to figure out what it will cost just to fly enough to stay current and safe afterward. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is 1 or 2 hours a month enough? Or is it more like a few hours a week? A couple 1 hour flights a week can add up to an extra $1000 a month. Another thing I'm trying to figure out is whether or not this time of year is a good time to start. For the next month and half or so, I can probably get lessons in after work. So, I should be able to swing 2-3 lessons per week. After that, clocks get set ahead and it's dark by the time I get off work. Lessons at that point would be limited to weekends. There's a possibility I can save up some PTO and take a half day every couple of weeks to get some extra time in, but lets just assume I'm only flying 4-6 times a month between November and March (Weather's also questionable that time of year). Am I just wasting money starting now, only to have to slow down in the winter and then start up again in the spring? The other option is to wait until the spring to start. At that time I should be able to get lessons in during the week (most of the time). Yeah, these are subjective questions. I know. But I've found the people here usually don't have a hard time voicing their opinions on subjective matters

OK, I got it now. But, I noticed the camera is fixed to be in line with the nose of the aircraft. How would I set it to be set down by 15 or 30 degrees? Here's the entry from the data.ini.
