				Who reads Japanese?
WhiteBoySamurai replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I can read it. Sort of. Aside from the parts that I just can't make out because the letters are overlapping (great job, 1940's mapmaker guy!), the inherent problem is that the Japanese used their own arbitrary pronunciations for Chinese characters. It's kind of like how Americans pronounce "lieutenant" as it actually looks, and Brits say "LEFTenant," but far, far worse. And since I'm not an expert on that time period (nor on Taiwan specifically), I can only make wild educated guesses as to what the Imperial Japanese actually called those locations. Example 1: The big city in the upper left corner is Kaohsiung (高雄). The same characters in Japanese would be read "Takao." (Exact same name as the Takao class heavy cruiser.) Example 2: Directly right of center on the east coast is a small town called Dawu (大武). The Japanese pronunciation would be "Daibu." Example 3: The very southern-most part of the island is Kenting (墾丁), currently a national park. Japanese pronunciation would be "Kontei." Note that on this map, the characters are read from right to left. On modern maps they'd be left to right. The modern day area this map is depicting is right here: https://www.google.co.jp/maps/@22.3250843,120.7711441,10z Hopefully you can match things up from that. -
View File Suffren class frigate This model represents the Suffren class frigate of the French Navy, in service from 1967 to 2007. They were the first French ships to be designed as guided missile frigates, tasked with escorting the Clemenceau-class aircraft carriers. The two ships of the class, Sufren and Duquesne, are easily recognizable by their huge radomes housing the DRBI-23 3D radar. The ships' primary weapon is the Masurca SAM, designed using data from the US Navy's Terrier program. Three different versions are included, covering each major refit of their long service lives, adding Exocet missiles as well as upgrades for the guns and electronics. While officially referred to as frigates, the Suffren class are destroyers for all intents and purposes and have destroyer "D" hull numbers. Their in-game role and RWR signature reflects this. See the readme for full details and credits. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or constructive criticisms regarding this model, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you! Last of the Suffren variants is finished. I'll try to upload either tonight or tomorrow morning. Here is a close-up of the main guns and new GIAT F2 guns. The twisty ammunition feeders were not easy to build. I will include the Malafon as a separate optional weapon, complete with a "torpedo" as the second stage, and I will provide the coordinates to line it up perfectly on the launcher with the static one. I will not be adding the launcher data to the ships; that's up to the end user.
 -
I had already finished the Masurca missile. It will be packaged with the ship when I upload it. No need to make another one. For future reference, when making a 2-stage missile, you need to separate the components into the main motor and the booster. Here is what it should look like in the schematic view: Then in the missile's data.ini file, you need to input "boosternodename=booster" like logan4 said. Whatever component you name here will detach after the boost phase. This can be used to detach other parts instead of a booster, too. For example, on my ASM-3 model (supersonic cruise missile), I used the boosternodename to have the ramjet intake covers jettison. As for the Malafon, there are no valid targets for it in this sim. It would just act as a regular anti-ship missile. Therefore I'm not adding it into the Suffren model except as static details. On the other hand, the Exocet launchers will be fully functional:
 -
Early version of the Suffren is now complete. I just need to finish the Exocet double launchers and put the refit versions together. I decided to use the blue & white Mk1 paint scheme for the Masurca rather than grey, just because it's more easily recognizable. Small issue I found: Since this is the only cold war French escort we have, the game will often assign three or four of them to the Clemenceau/Foch. Only two of this class were ever built, so the other two appear as generic unnamed "Suffren class frigates." Basically, we need more French frigates for this project. And I have my hands completely full with the Essex/Hyuga/Atago/San Antonio/Kirov rebuilds/PLAN vehicles/secret projects/etc. Hopefully someone else can take care of it. I recommend the Suffren's contemporary cousin, the Tourville class: She has similar forward superstructure and main gun layout, similar mast/smokestack, and almost the same overall dimensions as the Suffren. I can provide the .max file and texture patterns for whoever wants to use the parts. I'm also halfway done with a Crotale launcher which I can also make available for this ship or the Georges Leygues class.

Best news I've heard all week. Are those Helixes functional? If they're currently just "deck-oration," maybe Marcello could just export one separately so we can have a flyable Kamov? This post made me so excited, I obliterated an airbase. -
A typhoon is keeping me under house arrest this weekend, so I got a lot of work done on the Suffren. Close to 80% of the mesh is done and mapped, just need to add the fire control radars (because I am having trouble finding good photos of them) and some finer details. The biggest challenge will be to texture the main radome properly. It needs to have a seamless pattern like this:
 -
Rollout was at Komaki, not far from where I live. I saw the wind tunnel model on base last year. The ATD-X, like the name implies, is an advanced technology demonstrator, so it's still in the very early stages. The eventual goal is to have a stealthy, light-weight, super-maneuverable air superiority fighter to replace the JASDF's legacy aircraft (as well as improve Japan's indigenous aerospace technology). If/when this aircraft evolves into a real "F-3," I think we can expect to see a lot of refinements to the design, as well as the usual fabricated outrage from certain neighboring countries.

View File F-15DJ skin pack This is a package of high-resolution (4096x4096) textures for the F-15DJ in its current JASDF livery, representing the 23rd Squadron and 202nd Squadron. Authentic squadron markings and serial decals for each of the currently operational F-15DJ aircraft are included. As the texture is designed exclusively for the F-15DJ_97 from the F-15 Super Pack, you need to download and install that pack first if you haven't already. IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to save CombatAce's bandwidth and your hard drive space, the main texture files have been placed in the aircraft folder instead of each skin folder, since every squadron has identical skins aside from decals and markings. This will not overwrite or override any existing skins. Any textures placed in individual skin folders will take precedence over what's in the main folder, so other texture sets should still work fine. We have some Soviet ships ready for them. Aside from the stock Kiev, the Sovremenny is built to allow helicopter ops, as is the Kirov (which I really need to finish overhauling some day...). But, we don't have any naval helicopters yet, so I'm very glad someone else is doing the Kamovs. I just don't have the time, patience, or expertise to build them right now. I'm rooting for you, Snailman!

				Issue with ASM's
WhiteBoySamurai replied to warthog64's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Just looking at the data you're using, I see a lot of potential problems: Air-launched Harpoons have no rocket booster, for example, and the drag coefficient is too low. The missiles will be going way too fast and will crash into the ocean before they can level off after the initial dive. Also, the seeker stats are off, and even if the missile can manage to level off and sea skim, it may just not be able to see the target. I've just uploaded an updated version of my cruise missile pack. Download and overwrite and it should fix any problems you're experiencing. Speaking of cruise missiles, I'm currently missing an AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER. I could've sworn that I once saw a screenshot of someone's Super Hornet with this model (folded wings and all). Is this available somewhere, or was I just dreaming?
