In this situation they could have easily contacted the KAL plane or via Red Telephone the soviets. But they did nothing. The american side is as guilty as the soviet side for the dead of innocent people. You say, the plane was indentified. This is only partly true. It was identified as a 4 engine plane with humpback and lights on the side. In the soviet air community is gave the rumour, that the americans used camo lights to cover their SIGINT RC-135 as Boing 747, so the KAL Jumbo was seen as american spy plane and thatswhy shoten down. Of course this was a big mistake. But only some days later the same ground contoller ordered an fighter attack on a soviet IL-22 sub hunter, because it was missidentified as P-3 Orion.

THe cease fire between France and England after the 1:1 was boring. Today evening Poland vs Russia. Seems to be that some russian "fans" want to provoke the polish people with a "independence day march" in Warsaw. Could be an ugly hooligan fest if the polish police cant suppress it.

What we see in Syria is an religious civil war. The minority of the syrian people are shiit (like Iran and Iraq) and alawit (local minority). The majority is sunnit (like Saudi Arabia). Yes they were there. In my military time i heared from one Vietnam veteran who came back to a soviet SAM unit in the GDR (east germany). Soviet SAM sites there were neat and clean, the ways were well made, with white painted stone on the edge. And the veteran said to his new comrades, you only must paint some crosshairs on the sam site for the NATO, with no camo this site will survive no 5 minutes if the Amis really attack.
