It kind of depends what you're looking to do, and paid software solutions for computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis can get very expensive (e.g. Solidworks, Ansys) Having said that, something like OpenFOAM might help as it's a free solution and seems well regarded online. https://www.openfoam.com/ NASA also has FUN3D in their software catalogue although you would need to request access to it. https://software.nasa.gov/software/LAR-20188-1

Are the default keys the same for SF2 as they are for SF1?
Jimbib replied to Chugster's topic in General Discussion
That's correct, SF2 did not get a physical release. The SF2 manual can be found here: https://thirdwire.com/man/sf2/Strike_Fighters_2.htm -
Maybe this will help https://web.archive.org/web/20120624090040/http://www.microsoft.com/Games/combatfs3/downloads.aspx Wayback Machine is very handy for this sort of thing.

Does the Wings over Korea mod work with other mods?
Jimbib replied to Chugster's topic in Mods & Skinning Discussion
There are a few steps that should be followed in order to set up a new mod folder. Please note, this doesn't mean you have to run the game installer a second time round. Here is how you set up an additional mod folder (borrowed from the SF2NA Expansion pack install instructions): - Open your SF2 Installation directory and make a copy of your preferred SF2 .exe file and its corresponding .ini file. Rename the copied .exe and .ini files to whatever unique name you prefer. - Run the newly copied and renamed .EXE file, then exit back out to the Windows desktop after navigating through a few menus. A custom Mod Folder for your "[YourModFolder]" install will have been created in one of these locations: Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\ThirdWire\[YourModFolder] Windows Vista: \Users\[username]\Saved Games\ThirdWire\[YourModFolder] Windows 7: \Users\[username]\Saved Games\ThirdWire\[YourModFolder] ...where [YourModFolder] matches the name of the copied .EXE file that you created. You will install the downloaded mod files to this new directory. As others have mentioned, it's usually beneficial to keep conversion mods in separate install mod folders. The author of the mod will often have set up lots of parameters like available aircraft, ground objects, terrains, effects, available years etc. that are specific to the theatre / theme of the mods and when trying to combine two it might cause bugs. See here: https://combatace.com/forums/topic/100316-downloading-from-combatace-read-this/ Bonus tip... calling it shitty whilst asking for help won't get you far. -
That B-17 is in fact Sally B, but wears the Memphis Belle nose art on the starboard side as a tribute to the time it featured in the film.

To paraphrase Billy Connolly, there isn't a herd of wild horses that could make me step off that ledge, I tip my hat to those that can and do.

No problem, glad it could be of use. If there's any other lumps, bumps, etc. that were unique to the trainer, let me know and I'll add them to the wingtips LOD. I started with the wingtips as they were just the most obvious difference that needed adding but I'm sure there were other minor bits and bobs.

Big thank you for everything you do for CA, Erik

SF2 at the Seattle Museum of Flight
Jimbib replied to pachinkoparlorking's topic in General Discussion
I think I remember TK had an information page on his website for it but it seems to have disappeared over the years.... USAF: Air Dominance right? Would be cool to play it. -
True, the gun node along with a bunch of others like the refuelling probe and antennae were just sat on top of the fuselage and not cut into it thankfully, otherwise it would have been impossible to create a clean Tweet. A lot of the nodes that needed hiding were in a hierarchy as well which helped avoid the '32 Components' DATA.ini limit. I've attached the wingtip fakepilot/fakeseat files below along with all the ini edits to hide the unwanted nodes here in case anyone wants to take a crack at it. The wingtips are mapped at the same scale as the main 4096 texture, but thankfully fit onto a 512 texture as they're so small. T37B_wingtips.zip 1) add these components to [AircraftData] section to remove A-37B nodes: Component[012]=no_LWingTank Component[013]=no_RWingTank01 Component[014]=no_PylonOut_R Component[015]=no_PylonMid1_R Component[016]=no_PylonMid2_R Component[017]=no_PylonIn_R Component[018]=no_PylonIn_L Component[019]=no_PylonMid2_L Component[020]=no_PylonMid1_L Component[021]=no_PylonOut_L Component[022]=no_Box08 Component[023]=no_ifrprobe Component[024]=no_gun Component[025]=no_WhipAntennaBase Component[026]=no_TopAntenna1 Component[027]=no_TopAntenna02 2) add Wingtips SystemName part to Nose section SystemName[007]=Wingtips 3) add the following [Wingtips] lines to Crew section // Crew --------------------------------------------------------- [Wingtips] SystemType=PILOT_COCKPIT PilotModelName=FakePilot Position=0,0,0 SeatModelName=T37_wingtips SeatPosition=0.00,0.00,0.00 SeatID=2 4) add the following section at the bottom of the data.ini to hide the A-37 nodes // Mods ------------------------------------------------------ [no_LWingTank] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=LWingTank_there DestroyedNodeName=LWingTank DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_RWingTank01] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=RWingTank01_there DestroyedNodeName=RWingTank01 DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonOut_R] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonOut_R_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonOut_R DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonMid1_R] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonMid1_R_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonMid1_R DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonMid2_R] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonMid2_R_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonMid2_R DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonIn_R] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonIn_R_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonIn_R DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonIn_L] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonIn_L_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonIn_L DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonMid2_L] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonMid2_L_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonMid2_L DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonMid1_L] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonMid1_L_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonMid1_L DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_PylonOut_L] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=PylonOut_L_there DestroyedNodeName=PylonOut_L DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_Box08] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=Box08_there DestroyedNodeName=Box08 DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_ifrprobe] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=ifrprobe_there DestroyedNodeName=ifrprobe DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_gun] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=gun_there DestroyedNodeName=gun DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_WhipAntennaBase] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=WhipAntennaBase_there DestroyedNodeName=WhipAntennaBase DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_TopAntenna1] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=TopAntenna1_there DestroyedNodeName=TopAntenna1 DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [no_TopAntenna02] ParentComponentName=Nose ModelNodeName=TopAntenna02_there DestroyedNodeName=TopAntenna02 DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE

Yet another nothingburger slop post to get past the download requirement.

@daddyairplanes Well indeed Wingtips for Centurion's bird done via a fake seat and all the other pointy bits hidden. Anyone know how to apply specular, glossiness and reflection values to a seat? Tried the following but it didn't work: [LOD001] Filename=T37_wingtips.LOD Distance=2500 [Shadow] CastShadow=TRUE ShadowCastDist=2000 MaxVisibleDistance=400 [TextureSet001] Specular=0.400000 Glossiness=0.200000 Reflection=0.300000

It is an Su-27UB, one of two that made its way into USAF ownership in 2011: https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/3566120/sukhoi-su-27ub-flanker-c-trainer/ The other one was lost in a fatal accident in 2017: https://www.10percenttrue.com/post/the-secret-loss-of-ltc-eric-doc-schultz

Volker, please do not worry at all about any SF2 stuff, the most important thing is to rest and get better, sending lots of positive thoughts your way and wishing you a speedy recovery

Thirdwire website is partly back up at a new url, doesn't have all the same sections as before: https://thirdwireproductions.com/index2.htm

Yep, that matches the mapping for Tim Conrad's Mohawk. By the way, nice texture @pappychksix
-
This is not the DAT OV-1, theirs was a port of Jim "Rockster" Jacobson and the mesh is much lower quality. This appears to be a port of Tim "Piglet" Conrad's Mohawk from MSFS. There are a couple of possibilities here: It's either this port that was WIP by @mustang60348 nineteen years ago - see first post in thread below (same person who ported Tim's OV-10D Bronco) Or it's a separate, unrelated port, but I would say it's 99% Tim Conrad's model, check the similarities around all the antennae, mesh detail on fuel tanks, cockpit interior, canopy frame etc.

Thanks @dtmdragon, will give these a listen. He has also done a video with another Red Eagles pilot Ted "Gabby" Drake hosted by Steve Davies where they talk through some previously unseen footage of Constant Peg operations at TTR:

Thank you for the pointers on DCS - I'm looking forward to getting stuck into it. I purchased the Nevada map a few years ago when it was discounted and might pick up one of the Middle East maps too. As for SF2, that's a good point about not listening to the customer base, another major contributor as to why the PC games died - it's a shame he continuously locked / changed things in the coding which caused constant rework by the modders and didn't deliver on the features that the general fanbase like multiplayer etc. I still feel that the marketing goes hand in hand with point about listening to the customers, it is one of the things that the commercially successful flight sims out there at the moment are all doing well, whether it be DCS, War Thunder (just about qualifies as a flight sim), Microsoft Flight Sim etc and something that TK never bothered with. They are hitting all the major points - producing content which draws people in, a well-built website, exploiting owned / earned / paid channels, advertising across multiple platforms, and then they follow up by converting them through their sales funnel, and they know how to appeal to their different audiences whether it's the high fidelity option (DCS) or the shoot em ups (WT). The flight sims that don't get their message out there about their USPs and why their product deserves consideration and a potential purchase tend to flounder and / or die.
