I'm working on a supersize Ring Of Fire map but Sag over at Thudwire got me thinking some of ya'll might work on a major North Pole campaign. You need some terrain. I found 3DEM which can use GTOPO30 data to make sinusoidal projection and output a BMP file which Terrain Editor() can read. With some nudging from TK I was able to make 3DEM work with TE. 3DEM Website Is Gone, But 3DEM Still Available Here ~> http://freegeographytools.com/2009/3dem-website-is-gone-but-3dem-still-available-here The bmp's are 36 degree sections, and with a photopaint program I fit the resulting pie shaped bmp's into a large North Pizza. There are photopaint procedures that can either minimize and/or fill in the gaps for a reasonable appearance. The original 3DEM output BMP image this JPEG was made from is 10,000 pixels or 10,000km in TE: Full size fellas. I fit it into TE window using 12km tile size. I have tiled this with normal 2km tile size. It works, just takes a few minutes. The result is real, and spectacular. I constructed the map so the prime meridian is at bottom. You can rotate the square image by 90 degrees to taste, and I believe bmp's can be rotated 90 degrees without loss of detail. This is accurate, I think. How? On each pie BMP, I drew a small vertical line at the center top and when placing the pies, mated each top most pixel of the pies at the center of the big 10,000 pixel BMP. This point of intersection of all the pie lines is the pole. You can see the "gunsight" pattern at the coordinates (5000,5000) on the big BMP file. I will leave that there for you to check. Paint blue over it later. I have to upload the BMP first of course. If 10,000km is too large, a good crop would be 7,000km but that leaves out the Aleutians, Kamchatka, and England. A strictly North Pole campaign might could maybe still done without these lands. A further reduction to say 4,000km could be made if you want an SF-style undersized terrain. That might be an idea given the long flying times involved. After tiling in TE with 2km tile size, and 1km height resolution,... The 3dem .BMP is 95.3MB The terrain .HFD is 190MB The terrain .TFD is 286MB This loads fast and runs fine but I'm using a good recent system with 4GB memory and Windows-7. Don't try using TE on this 10,000km map with 2km tile size on less than 4GB memory. I can 7zip this up to CA for Christmas along with the pies. One of the procedures for minimizing the gaps is to merge the pies at their most northern land surface. Doing this would create a single large gap somewhere else, preferably in a pure ocean area like between Greenland and Iceland. The remaining gapping farther from the pole will still need filling -- my current method for my RoF map is copy the gap to new image, rotate vertical, copy some strips next to the gap, and flip to match one side of terrain, and un-rotate and place in position. The flipping lets one gap side be seamless, but the other is not. Another procedure could be to slide the pie slices toward the pole so they mostly merge, but this would reduce the Arctic Ocean size. I myself would rather merge most northern lands and fill the remaining gapping, as the gaps here are not nearly as large as the huge gaps on the southern areas of my 10000km RoF map. I once saw a discussion with TK and the BoB campaign modders at Thudwire about SF campaigns not requiring ground combat. I think a campaign line could be drawn through Bering Straight to the pole, past Greenland past Norway and down into Europe. If some of you want to do something different for the SF series, give an oversize North Pole campaign a thought. I can help with the BMP map but otherwrise I'm in the deep end with my RoF map now. Merry Christmas!

Wrench, why won't TE work with SF2? None of the old terrains can be used? Or do they just need manual changing of file types for New Sim. Grinch (last page November) :: Missing transition tiles. We always try to take shortcuts, thinking we don't need to make a transition set, but we do need it. Evidence is the horizontal or vertical strips of the first tile tile listed -- often the sea tile is made first. That's TE's way of defaulting if a transition tile is not there. This is the new Terrain Editor Icon ~> But then, when the jobs done, the Icon is ~>

Finally got round to this. Weird, and typical of my SF experience in general -- always smooth and simple. Win7 ATI-4550 SF 2006 Put the enb d3 and INI files in Flight folder: nothing. Put in basic SF folder and *BAM* double frames. Can do 300km horizon distance with 2km terrain tiles. Never could do that before (always went for the low end video cards). Had to find a d3dx9_26 and put that in SF folder as well. ~ http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3dx9_26 Yep, Shift+F12 turns the gruesome brightness effects on/off. It may be worth tuning the entire Enviro file to see if ENB with F12 effects can give it more colour control. Don't see how but who knows.

Happy 106th Birthday to Fixed Wing Flight!
Lexx_Luthor replied to DWCAce's topic in Military and General Aviation
~> http://www.f-106deltadart.com/ There, fixed. This thread was toast. I just saved its B A C O N. Really, at seeing "106" in the title I stopped reading and just clicked the thread fast as I could. Yes I have a problem with this and I'm not getting it "treated." -
From what I've gathered, these guys were alot of conscripted college students and, like our ground pounders, never wanted to be there. I assume the high-slow target would be U-2 or RB-57. This looks really interesting. Downloaded it but not looked at it yet. - - - * NIKE ALERT * Just found this, new as of summer 2009. Hercules simulator. ~> http://ed-thelen.org/NikeSimulation.html

FC:: Building pyramids comes to mind. Just to think, in another world, a new plane enters service and its replacement was already in test flight. That replacement had its own replacement being designed with slide rules, and even that had a replacement idea in concept proposal on some napkins. Funny, they did this with slide rules. The more computers became involved, the longer it takes heeehh!!! In Physics II we had a sub teacher who worked on SR-71 design. We talked after class a bit and I mentioned that I was impressed he did that with slide rules. He laughed and said he never thought of it that way.

Jetting Through the Grand Canyon

I forgot about that. A good thunderstorm on approach is the coolest sound ever made. -
Jetting Through the Grand Canyon

Save that film!! lol. I like my Quiet when outside in Nature but you have to realize that jet thunder is pure nature as well as the sound of freedom and goes well with nature. I'm weird like that but it is, what it is. I should live near an airport, sleep like a baby. When I lived near choo choo tracks same thing but not quite as nice as teh jets. The only thing that might sound better and more natural is big space rocket. -
104:: I noticed that and what I did is funny. Before I learned the basics of FM, I did what Yak did in real life trying to copy Su-15 features to his -28. See 76 linked poast above about Yak-28-64. I actually thought of that episode when I did the following. I knew Boopidoo's Su-15 could go supersonic hi, so I copy-pasted the Su-15 fuselage data to my Yak-28 data. It worked perfectly -- supersonic but not Mach 2. I'll eventually tune it to -28 standard myself when I get round to it. But it got it supersonic hi for now.

cannot reinstall as my CD/DVD drive is fragged. StiG, TK made the game so we can copy-paste multiple game folders for multiple "installs" without having to install them all from CD. If you get your game running again, copy it to a new folder as a backup. Never need CD again. I have an unpatched SF 1.0 install, with all Patches in that folder. That's for XtremE emergency only, or if I need to look up ancient default v1.0 ini settings. I have backup folders of my current game as well. It should fit on a good flash drive too. And it compresses well (use 7-zip google it). Backup SF saved my toast a few times.

bummp* I Don't have sound on my computer(*), never have and never will, but nice to see her. Thanks I always loved the glass song. I never went "Madonna" like alot of folks. I loved that one Blondie song, and I don't know any other Blondie songs but that one. Its enough for me. -- (*) I like to JAM stereo when I play The StrikeFighters. It helps me relax during the dogfight woof woof.

Yea Dave, common sense I can go with, but I figure one exception leads to another. We'll disagree on that which is cool. If what Ruggbutt is saying, its worth than I thought, the HA (okay HOAs) becoming a defacto government with authoritarian tendencies. I was thinking you were bloviating (like that MTL guy over at Thudwire ) when you poasted they were communist. You were right. The other one I like is not just HA but cities "outlawing" clotheslines. Man if and when I'll buy it will be where I have rabbits out front, hogs in the back (just kidding about them in front), and if the lot is big enough a junk B-47 on the side. Seems like everybody has an F-86Dora, no thanks.
-
Man that is great stuff Ruggbutt. Yesa its *not* directly the politicians here, they should step in and help this guy and perhaps free everybody from this nonsense. But I do understand the desire for some type of "conformity" but these rules in the long run seem to cause problems, the concept got carried away too far maybe. Thanks

One day the sky will be full of them.....
Lexx_Luthor replied to Wrench's topic in Mods/Skinning Discussion
D model, circa 1961 in natual metal/anti-flash white, and then is SouthEast Asia, circa 1966. You gonna upgrade the engines for 1960s. J-85 maybe a tad small? Its not too great a fantasy, if restricted to recon only. I doubt they can hit any targets. I'm gonna use em. They hacked up a half dozen RF-100A long range recon because they were desperate to find out what was doing in USSR, before U-2. I figure if SAC launches strikes in late 1947, they can't find much, so in 1948 they will ship a few -- very expensive -- "RB-35" prototypes to Korea or India or Norway. Same with "RB-49" (used as recon) a year later. Neither will be built in any number at all, only a half dozen maybe, but it is what it is. The other option is Republic R-12 but maybe make this a campaign variable. The other variable is just lots and lots of RB-29s, or a combination of these campaign possibilities. -
Wowa I never knew that (for SF1). I've never used the WE, not even once, except for "saving" the data file. I'm up to nearabouts 100 weapons now for SAC and PVO alone and eventually I'll have to reorder them...(EDIT) no dam that's it, I have to re-order them not just fill in deleted numbers. Bummer. Guess I never will use WE. I swear I've never used it one time, as I'm good at file editing (lots of programming)

Dave I'm with ya hell I'd put hogs in my front yard. Fly the big pole. But I'd never buy a house in a suburban sheep pen to begin with. We have a choice not to move to a HA. Yea I figure these HA agreements will eventually fail along with the entire post-WW2 suburban phenomenon as the collapse continues. Problem with doing the traditional American thing and buying land and building a house for raising a family, is the city expands and confiscates your property to put in...guess...suburban HA's (more property tax), or some corporation (more local jobs, the corp is often given tax breaks). Property taxes for home land means State owned property. Now we are talking Communism. Dave:: "Its not a damn ham radio tower." You know, I thought about this a bit. The flag is supposed to be a symbol of freedom. A radio tower is freedom in action. I'm not a HAM but I know alot of em. I used to climb the big towers and I love them...er...kinda. Well its really a love-hate relationship hence the "used to" bit. My guess the pole is a "tall structure" and probably what the rules try to deal with. Freedom and liberty require everybody to follow the rules -- if one is excepted all are excepted. We obviously don't have that, but that's the idea of at least some of the Founders. Peace bro
-
   Typhoid thanks that pic made my day.
-
He agreed to the rules when he bought into the HA. Should never have bought into such an agreement, so we can't entirely blame the HA. I know folks who later regretted it, wanted to raise a ham radio tower. They find a means. Stay away from HA's.

Thanks OVS really good info. I should branch out a bit, but no time.

front blade is Objet03 rear blade is tacan My setup is (SF1 series)...it seems some meshes need the "_ok" and this tacan is one of them (but not Objet03). Confusing? I always add the _ok. [AircraftData] : : Component[008]=BigBlade1 Component[009]=BigBlade2 [bigBlade1] ParentComponentName=Fuselage ModelNodeName=Objet03_ok DestroyedNodeName=Objet03 DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE [bigBlade2] ParentComponentName=Fuselage ModelNodeName=tacan_ok DestroyedNodeName=tacan DetachWhenDestroyed=TRUE HasAeroCoefficients=FALSE haha Wrench I've been plugging away at a new 6-MMmap (10-MMmap hopefully) and I got this from C5 to help out here. Figure I do some "normal" contributing for a change. For the last 15 minutes, rushing around trying to find these blades, every time I closed the Nesher OUT and DATA files, I click the icon for... ...TERRAIN EDITOR -- hey Wrench your right 2 x tacans wozop with that? Anyways this takes out both blades for me.

What did you program OFF campaign with? More than anything I wish we could do that. Teh SF is my *only* computer game, no time for anything else hehe..
-
I must have Poasting Disorder (PD). I don't do SF campaigns because for the campaign I'm (slowly) developing -- which is the only reason I'm into the SF -- I don't want the player squadron to have game outcome preference over other air units. Surface units obviously are different since they are not playable, but I won't be using them much. It all might work good enough though. I really don't want to program a campaign engine.

I suggest Lowengrin's 3rd Party independent dynamic campaign engine for IL-2/Forgotten Battles. To some degree Lowengrin saved this game for offline players -- as IL-2 Online War creators saved the game for those who like dynamic online war campaigns. Lowengrin ~> http://www.lowengrin.com/news.php Very interesting that Lowengrin makes only an "editor" for the SF series. A non-stock dynamic campaign is not possible because of the lack of a map-wide text file combat event recorder for all units (not just player squadron). That's why I never even tried an SF campaign. I eventually will program my own in FORTRAN, some decades from now at the rate I'm going, by manually counting units after a game mission. Its the only way I know.
