    1. 1917(1) OFF MOD

New missions, flak. 917(1) covers the period from January through to April 1917 : the withdrawal of the German army to the Hindenburg Line, the diversionary Battle of Arras and Nivelle's great offensive in the Champagn. It was a period in which an Allied numerical superiority in the air was pitted against a technologically superior and increasingly well organised but still outnumbered German opposition, as the expansion in the RFC and RNAS saw hundreds of the older machines and under-trained air crew flooding into France. In the first months of 1917 the German army took the strategic initiative, following a period of poor weather that hindered the Allied recon. activity, with a well planned 'scorched earth' withdrawl to a prepared defensive line. British recon. and photo recon. resources were stretched to the limit, with scouts being drafted in to take on some of the work, as they desperately photographed and mapped the new German trench systems, whilst other two-seater units covered the advancing troops with low level contact missions. The advance was harassed in many places by German two-seater aircraft doing the same, and by aggressive but sporadic attacks by the German Jastas (although many of these were now in the south, to cover French preparations in the Champagn region). So much British effort was going in to recon., and on escorting the recon. aircraft, that Allied bombing switched to night bombing, of rail and communication centres, with little in the way of day bombing. The British then launched their attack on the Arras front at the beginning of April. The Art.Obs., particularly counter-battery work, now had the highest priority, along with tactical recon. and photo recon. missions along the front, with some scouts once again being drafted in to do some of the recon. work and also to attack the balloon line. Heavily escorted day bombing now resumed, mostly against rail centres, to try and stop the Germans bringing forward reinforcements. As the British threatened to break through at Arras the Germans drew in air resources from the south of the region, and the now numerically strengthened German fighter force (including new types such as the Albatros D.III) started to take a heavy toll on the British Corps machines, bombers, long recon., and their escorting scouts. On 14th April the French launched Nivelle's long awaited offensive in the Champagne, but the Germans had advance knowledge of the detailed planning for this and it ground to a halt, after very heavy losses that tore the heart out of the French army. By the end of April the French were back on the defensive and fighting at Arras was winding down. But new British aircraft types such as the SE5 and the Bristol Fighter, deployed too little and too late to have a significant impact, were already in France, and others such as the Camel and the DH4 were on the way...the pendulum was about to swing again as the British, having survived 'Bloody April' with the offensive doctrine intact, and despite heavy losses in the air, prepared for a major offensive in the north.

Mod Description: The HPW Rear Guns Bullet Spread mod adjusts the Less Accurate setting in the Rear Guns selection box located in Workshop to make the rear guns for the AI observer somewhat less accurate than it is in the stock game. Please note that this mod does NOT alter either the Normal or the Accurate settings for the AI observer, on the theory that users who prefer these settings are masochists already who do not wish the bullet spread for the AI to be watered down any further. Instead, this mod is intended for those who feel the AI at the Less Accurate setting in the stock game is still just a little too accurate.

      ####EXTREMELY IMPORTANT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS####
This mod should be used ONLY with Jonesoft's Generic Mod Enabler. ALSO, BECAUSE THIS MOD ALTERS SOME WORKSHOP SETTINGS, ANOTHER COPY OF THE JSGME PROGRAM MUST *FIRST* BE INSTALLED INSIDE THE PARENT OBDSoftware FOLDER--NOT THE CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields FOLDER!! THIS WILL CREATE A SEPERATE MODS FOLDER LOCATED INSIDE THE OBDSoftware FOLDER. COPY OR EXTRACT THE HPW REAR GUNS FOLDER AND SUBFOLDERS INTO THIS NEW MODS FOLDER!! To activate the mod, you must run the JSGME program LOCATED INSIDE YOUR OBDSoftware FOLDER and then click on the HPW Rear Guns file. Do not worry about having two copies of JSGME installed in OFF. I have tested this out and it does not seem to cause any issues with either OFF or my system. Just make sure you copy or extract the gun mod to the correct copy of JSGME, located inside the OBDSoftware folder.

HPW Front Guns Bullet Spread Mod

      by Herr Prop Wasche

      Zip file contents:

HPW Front Guns mod folder and subfolders
      HPWFrontGunsReadme.txt

Mod Description: The HPW Front Guns Bullet Spread mod adjusts the Accurate, Normal, and Less Accurate settings in the Main Guns selection box located in Workshop to make the front guns for both humans and AI somewhat less accurate, resulting in fewer kills per mission at each difficulty setting. The following chart gives the player an idea of the differences between the settings in the unmodded game and in the mod. Higher values indicate a wider bullet spread pattern, and thus a less accurate bullet stream.

      Bullet Spread (OFF)
      Accurate: .20
      Normal: .50
      Less Accurate: 1.00

      Bullet Spread (HPWFGBS mod)
      Accurate: .40
      Normal: .75
      Less Accurate: 1.25

Basically, this mod gives the player more options in his or her selection of bullet spread. In terms of bullet accuracy, the OFF Accurate setting allows for the most accurate shooting, while the HPWFGBS mod Less Accurate setting allows for the least accurate shooting. Notice that the Normal setting in the HPWFGBS mod is exactly between the Normal and Less Accurate settings in the standard game. I have found that this setting best achieves the goal of making the game more challenging while not excessively handicapping the AI's ability to shoot down opposing aircraft. The Less Accurate setting in the mod is for those very accurate shooters who desire a particular challenge. If you are currently shooting down more than 2 or 3 opposing aircraft per mission, you may wish to use this difficulty setting. Note, however, that your AI wingmates as well as your AI enemies will also have more difficulty shooting anyone down at this setting! Perhaps in P4 we can wish for separate front guns settings for the human and AI pilots, respectively. Hint, hint!

      ####EXTREMELY IMPORTANT####
INSTALLATION: This mod should be used ONLY with Jonesoft's Generic Mod Enabler. 4. 1916(3) OFF MOD

New mission files. In late August the German air service is reorganised and the small scout sections are brought together into the first Jasta units. Boelcke returns, having recruited more pilots to form a new crop of fighter pilots, amongst them Manfred von Richthofen, and new scout types start to arrive at the front (starting with Halberstadts in the last weeks of August). This leads to a more aggressive attitude from September onwards, with flight or Jasta strength patrols starting to contest Allied domination of the sky over the battlefield. The British are still patrolling aggressively, despite the now inferior machines, with a policy of deep offensive patrols, long recon., and now frequent bombing missions to strategic railway junctions, airfields, and lines of communication. The photographing and detailed mapping of opposing trench systems also continues, with art.obs. and photorecon. by both sides. The German air service continues to send their solo photorecon. missions far into Allied airspace, but they need to fly ever higher as Allied flak becomes more effective, with the switch from Shrapnel to HE shells and development of better targetting doctrine and technology. By the end of the year the stage is now set for 'Bloody April' 1917, with the Allies struggling to push the German scouts back from their Front sectors where increasingly vulnerable Allied art.obs. and photorecon. machines are going about the daily task of registering the artillery, counterbattery, and photography...

    5. 1916(2) OFF MOD

New mission types, new flak (Allied now switchinh from Shrapnel to HE).

1916(2) will cover July-August 1916. In the July-August period the E.IIIs appear to have been mostly held back by a combination of the lack of leadership and example (the death of Immelmann and the temporary grounding of Boelcke), problems with the synchronisation gear of the gun (thought to be the reason for Immelmann's downfall), reorganisation, and low moral as a much reduced number of Fokker pilots were faced with the Allied build up to the Somme offensive. During the first two months of the battle of the Somme the Allies gained almost complete control of the air above the battlefield, until the tide started to turn again at the end of August with the introduction of the new German scouts, a new influx of pilots, and reorganisation of scouts into the more effective organisation of the Jasta system. 1916(2) will therefore present a two-month hiatus for the 'German' player, with mostly 'lone wolf' and solo defensive patrols over friendly territory (still one or two line patrols, but not as many). For the Allied player it will be more or less a continuation of the earlier period, January - June.

    8. 1918 National Geographic Western Front Map, Large Scan

      .

      Greetings All,

Olham recently mentioned the scan of the 1918 National Geographic Western Front Map that I assembled from about 120 smaller clips and cleaned up for use when navigating in OFF. This is a high quality JPEG copy that I originally posted in another download link on the forums several months ago, and since it has been asked about I though it best to place it here to make it easier for folks to locate. This is a VERY large image, (7760 x 6550), so just be aware of that when you are downloading the RAR file and unpacking it. To use this map it is best to make a small clip of the AO you are currently assigned to fly and print it out, then use it as your cockpit map, just like our RL counterparts did back in the Great War. Enjoy.

      Cheers!

    9. All New Medals For OFF P3

      .

      Greetings All,

Here is a full set of new and improved medals for our beloved Over Flanders Fields BHaH HiTR combat flight sim.

The instructions for their use are relatively simple. Start by making a back-up copy of your "Medals" folder found in the "CampaginData" folder of your OFF install; the path to it should look something like this if you've installed the sim on your 'C' drive:

      C:\OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\campaigns\CampaignData

Now all you need to do is copy and paste all the new medal files found inside the "New_OFF_Medals" folder into the "Medals" folder of your OFF install, allowing all the new files to overwrite the old ones, (this is why you made a back-up copy of the original folder first, so that you can go back to the old medals if you so wish).

Alrighty then, that is all that's required if you wish to do nothing more than see the shiny new versions of the thirteen original OFF awards on your various pilot's pages. However, if you're like me and would like to adjust the medals presented to be a bit more historically accurate, you can now do so by going into your active pilot's dossier and changing a bit of text. Following the same path that brought you to your "Medals" folder you will also see your "Pilots" folder. Inside are all the files for your pilots; active, inactive, captured, and dead, (assuming you haven't already deleted your captured and dead ones). Find your current active pilot's dossier by opening up your "PilotXDossier" files one at a time, with 'X' being the number of the pilot, (but don't assume the number matches up with that actually shown in the sim; it does not, which is why you have to go through your various pilot dossiers until you find the correct one). Once you have found your current active pilot's dossier, make a copy of it for back-up purposes. Now, with your active "PilotXDossier" opened up in Notepad, look down to line #19 and you will see a number that represents how many medals your pilot has been presented, and immediately following that are the names of each medal. To change a medal you need only type in the new medal name, (which is the same name as the medal image file found in your "Medals" folder), in place of the medal you are replacing. The lines of text you are dealing will look something like this:

      5
      Iron Cross 2nd Class
      Iron Cross 1st Class
      Hohenzollern House Order
      Orden Pour le Merite
      Red Eagle Order
      Null
      Null
      Null
      Null

Save your changes and you're done! Now pop into the sim and look at your current Pilot's Page. Is that spiffing or what!

      ******************

The medals included in this new pack are as follows.

The thirteen original OFF P3 medal files which are, in order by country:

      Military Cross
      Distinguished Flying Cross
      Distinguished Service Order
      Victoria Cross
      Croix de Guerre
      Military Medal
      Legion of Honour
      Distinguished Service Cross
      COngressional Medal of Honor
      Iron Cross
      Royal Hohenzollern House Order
      Red Eagle Order
      Orden Pour le Merite

The seventeen new OFF P3 medal files which are, again in order by country:

      Military Medal Britain
      Military Medal with Bar
      Military Cross with Bar
      DFC with Bar
      DSO with Bar
      DSC Britain
      DSC with Bar Britain
      DSC with Oak Leaves
      Croix de Guerre Belgium
      Albert Order with Swords
      Iron Cross 2nd Class
      Iron Cross 1st Class
Iron Cross 1c Iron Cross 2c
      Military Merit Order Bavaria
      Hohenzollern House Order
      Golden Military Merit Cross
      Turkish War Medal 1915

Just as before, red backgrounds denote awards of the Entente Powers, while blue backgrounds denote awards of the Central Powers. In the new awards you now find a few more that can be presented to the enlisted pilots. These are: the British Military Medal and Military Medal with Bar; the Belgian Croix de Guerre, which can be presented to NCO's and officers alike; the Prussian Golden Military Merit Cross, often called the "NCO's Blue Max", (as the Orden Pour le Merite was for officers only); and the Turkish War Medal 1915, (like the Iron Cross, this can be awarded to all ranks). On this last one, you could assign it to a pilot who may have started his military career serving on the Eastern Front before transferring to the Kaiser's air service, (much as Ritter von Richthofen did).

About the various versions of the Iron Cross now available to you. The idea is that when the sim assigns you your first award as a German ace, (which will be the generic Iron Cross), you can now go into your pilot's dossier and change that to the Iron Cross 2nd Class, and at the second award of same generic version you can now switch it to the Iron Cross 1st Class, which would have been the proper order back in the Great war. Additionally, as you are presented more awards both by the sim and later on by yourself as acting Adjustant, you can switch to the single image of "Iron Cross 1c Iron Cross 2c", which will free up an additional display space on your pilot's page for one of the new awards, (despite the extra "Null" lines in your pilot dossier, the sim will only ever display five medals maximum).

You will notice two versions of the Hohenzollern House Order, and they are identical except for the name. I included the second one as the sim does not allow room for a third line of text under the medal image, and with the original file the word "Royal" forces the name into a third line which gets cut off by the text below it.

I should also point out the British DSC; this was a typical award of the RNAS and should be used when flying with that branch of the service.

And remember the medals with bars, (or in the case of the US DSC, an oak leaf cluster), denote a second award of the same honor, so these would be added to a pilot's page later on in his career and would take the place of the same award without the bar.

One final point. Sometimes the sim will revert to the original medals on your pilot' page when it presents you with the next one. Not to worry, simply change them back. This issue doesn't come up very often, but it might and I didn't want you getting all fidgety.

That's it. Have fun with the new baubles, and feel free to stop by the "Over Flanders Fields General Forum" and make a post if you have a question about these, or if you wish to spot me to a pinta' for being such a swell.

      Cheers!

      Lou

P.S. I have created a set of tables to help folks determine how to go about awarding the new medals to their virtual pilots, and here is the link to these tables:

Award Guidelines For The New Off P3 Medal Set

    12. Fokker Dr. 1 from Jasta 18 - the "Raben Staffel"

This is my latest fictional skin for a Fokker Dr. 1 from Jasta 18, also called "Staffel Raben" or "Raben-Staffel".
Their fighters had first been red-nosed, with a blue fuselage.
Under Staffelführer August Raben the colours got changed.
The nose section and the upper wing surfaces were Vermillion red, the rest was white.
All pilots used a Raven symbol, some had additional own emblems.
The Raven symbol was mostly black - but as I said; this is an individual and fictional skin.

      Enjoy it!

This skin could not have been done without the great fund of more than 3.400 skins, OBD's skinners made for us.
A big "THANK YOU" and a deep bow for so much dedication and love put into all that!

    13. Jasta 73 "Night Owl" (fictional)

after reading about the night victories of several Jasta 73 pilots I decided it would be fun to create a fictional ace skin for aspiring German night fighters. Jasta 73 had 7 confirmed night victories between June and October of 1918. Fritz Anders scored 5 of these.

the original skins for the Albatros D.Va were by Paarma. I just cut and pasted a few skins together and added some personal markings.

HPW Full Campaign Damage Model for OFF BHaH HITR
      v2.5

      by Herr Prop Wasche

      Zip file contents:

HPWDMv2.5\aircraft folder with 477 individual aircraft folders, .xdp files and .bdp files (Fortiesboy, you were right!)
      HPWDMv2.5 readme.txt

INSTALLATION: Important! This version of the damage mod is intended to be used only in conjunction with Jonesoft's Generic Mod Enabler and should not be installed UNLESS JSGME has already been installed into your CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields game folder. With JSGME, installation and use of this, or any mod, is very easy. Simply extract the contents of the HPWDMv2.5 zip file into the MODS folder which is created when you install JSGME into OFF. The mod is correctly installed if you see the readme.txt and the following folder structure inside the MODS folder: HPWDMv2.5\aircraft\Alb_DIII_AC1, etc. To load the mod, simply run JSGME, highlight the mod you wish to use, click on the top button, and then start your game. That's it!

NOTE: This mod is intended to be used in QC battles AND the main campaign.
      ------------

      Version History

2.5 Major fix and revision! All HPW damage model users are urged to upgrade to this version!

--Fix: Discovered and corrected major error introduced in v2.1 which prevented player pilot from being injured or dying even when "Dead is Dead" pilot outcome option was selected in Workshop. All three outcomes should now work as designed.

--Fix: Corrected error which prevented damage model mod from being applied to Nieuport 11's.

--Hit points for horizontal stabilizers increased slightly to lower chances of "tail-first slides" at low altitude for some aircraft. Note: This problem may also be partly an FM issue and cannot be fully fixed by changes to the damage model.

--Hit points for all control cables increased slightly in all aircraft.

--Important new feature: aircraft .bdp file associated with each matching aircraft .xdp file now included in mod. This has two major effects: game load times are no longer slowed the first time after the mod is applied, AND the original HITR .bdp files will be restored if the mod is disabled or removed. Previous versions of the damage model failed to restore the correct .bdp files, possibly causing certain game anomalies if the mod was disabled.

    17. N28 FM 1.5 update

      Greetings, OFFers!

HPW proudly presents the 1.5 revision (and first official release) of his Flight Model for the Nieuport 28, flown by several U.S. squadrons in early to mid 1918. This FM is meant to be used as an alternative to the official OFF FM used by the N28. Major changes to the FM include: slightly higher top speed, better high altitude performance, slower dive speed, increased susceptibility to upper wing damage from prolonged high speed dives (just as in real life), and improved handling with fewer nasty stall characteristics.

The major improvement from 1.0 to 1.5 includes better AI performance--less climbing and stalling during combat and less "bobbing" up and down of the aircraft at low altitudes. This should make AI opponents tougher to shoot down and make your AI wingmates more likely to survive their mission.

Installation is via JSGME. Simply unzip the file into the MODS folder, open JSGME, enable the mod, and fly! The mod has been tested and works for both QC and campaign missions.

Notes: Please be sure to write to me about any comments or criticisms of the new mod. Also, please note that this mod is based substantially on the existing official OFF FM for the N28 and would not be possible without OBD's and Polvoski's previous work on this and the other planes currently available in OFF. Thank you OBD!
