As a Brit, I'm ashamed to say I have never tried this one.

Read reviews etc but never actually taken the plunge on it.

I've considered getting this many times over the years, but never got around to it. The lack of MP and narrow time frame put me off when I've been close to buying.

Of course, we have the SoW version of BoB coming soon (a year or so?) which has dampened my outlook as well.

Yet I never just say "no!", I'm still thinking "maybe."

Hi Combatacers, nice to see a bit of interest in BOBII...hope I can help with answers to a few of the questions that have popped up.

* Will it play on my machine?

I am a beta tester and one of the machines I test on is a 2004 P4 3GHz HT, 1GB Ram, 256MB ATI card. We do this to be able to check whether new patches and features are compatible with older machines. I can tell you BoBII Patches 2.05 to the coming 2.08 run on this machine with no noticeable framerate difference, and with most graphic features at medium to high. It is a very low demand game - no Uber rig needed. There is an optional add-on called Multi-skin which (as it sounds) automatically adds hundreds of historically accurate skins to the game for both RAF and LW. This needs a 256MB card to run without causing long load times for missions. But as I said, it is optional.

* I don't want to worry about the strategy for winning the Battle of Britain, I just want to play as a pilot and have missions given me.

Patch 2.07 (currently available) gave the ability to play as an RAF pilot and have all sorties generated automatically for you. You watch the game unfold on the 2D map interface and then the game offers you the chance to hop into the cockpit at times you decide. You can eg:

- Choose to fly any particular aircraft type, any time it goes into action. For example you can tell the game, "I want to fly a Spitfire, and I want you to offer me the chance to hop into the cockpit in the air whenever a Spit Squadron gets into a big furball."

- Choose to fly with a particular squadron, or even a particular Ace in that squadron (BOBII models individual pilots for every aircraft)..."I want to fly in 54 Squadron as Alan Deere, and I want you to put me in the cockpit from the moment he is scrambled, until he lands again."

How: You start a normal campaign and in the field where you type your name (The Commander Field) you click on the word 'Commander'. This gives you a screen with the option to fly as a Pilot or go back to the Commander level. Choose Pilot, choose your campaign phase, and then strap your wings on!

* I'll just wait for Storm of War from IL2 developers

I'll be buying Storm of War too! But if you look at the status of SoW it has only just entered alpha phase.

We are unlikely to see SoW this year. But BoBII costs only $20 and is here today!

* It has no multiplayer.

As you can see from my website, though part of BoB Dev Group I like any and all sims. IL2 is the multiplayer king. In the BoB Developers Group we have decided to specialise in making BoBII strong in other areas, like the offline AI (pants wettingly human-like) and historical accuracy. We hope the game will be both an adrenaline rush, and a history lesson!

The game actually does have a hidden multiplayer menu which has never been activated because it is buggy as heck. BDG has looked at how much work it would take to get it operational and asked would it offer anything you can't get from IL2 and the answer at the moment is that it is not a priority to get it up and working.

* Is the game just as epic as the BoB movie?

And then some! One of the most popular instant action missions is 'Battle of Britain Day' in which your squadron of either Spits or Hurricanes is thrown into the sky on one of the biggest days of the Battle. There are literally hundreds of aircraft in the air at once, and as you struggle to get height in your little kite, you can see the Luftwaffe formations marching toward you, from horizon to horizon. Of course, you can also fly shotgun in an Me109 or 110 (my favorite) and then you get to feel the power of flying above hundreds of bombers and watching the 'puny' RAF squadrons rising up to meet you (the trick being not to let one of these 'puny' Hurricanes send you into the drink a little later in the day...)

I think I might go for the downloadable version + patch. My computer wasn't up to the original BoB back then and the riginal release passed me by. But this looks too good to miss.

BTW it's available in the shops here in the UK as part of a multi-pack with First Eagles, Strike Fighters Gold and F/A-18 Operation Desert Storm. Sounds like a good way to kick-start a flight sim collection.

Nah never played it - but did the BOB thing years back with other games.

besides after 4 years - am finally playing an F-104C Rolling Thunder campaign in WOV :blush2:

I had BOBII for years before installing the latest patches. It wasn't stable before, now it is and I must say it is a very good game. I really like it. I'ld say you have to try. I think it is at patch 2.07 now.

It's like your getting a whole new game and not just a patch that fixes the bugs. :good:

Wish these guys would give Mig Alley a try. :)

MiG Alley had so much potential. I loved the contrails all over the sky.

Which Korean War sim had you start out in training in the T-6? You had an instructor in the back that would critique everything. I didnt think it was MA, but could be wrong. That one always CTD after a few mins.

I have posted here before trying to raise awareness of this sim...

and almost the only people that paid attention were other people who already owned it.

MiG Alley and the original BoB by Rowan are both excellent sims only held back by unpatched bugs and the need for a poly/texture facelift.

BoB 2 takes care of both problems with BoB, but deletes the multiplayer component rather than fixing it.

I would like to see MiG Alley get the same facelift, but it seems their plans to do so have been abandoned in favor of expanding the BoB engine further.
