MAKO69 Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 (edited) I thought the flameout was due to her adding to much power to soon it was an F-14A which had the Pratt & Whitney TF30 which didn't like sudden movements of the throttle forward, which could cause flameouts. As I recall the LSO were asking here to add power on approach she was below glidepath. Edited August 9, 2008 by MAKO69 Quote

As i recall they wer asking here to add power on approach she was below glidepath. What I have read is that moving the throttle too aggressively caused compressor stalls (basically, turbulence around the compressor blades), which then caused the flame-outs. At high altitude it was reccomended that the throttle not be moved at all during maneuvering--I think that may even be in the NATOPS. Quote
gbnavy61 Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 (edited) What I have read is that moving the throttle too aggressively caused compressor stalls (basically, turbulence around the compressor blades), which then caused the flame-outs. At high altitude it was reccomended that the throttle not be moved at all during maneuvering--I think that may even be in the NATOPS. Additional info on the Hultgreen (I believe I misspelled it before) mishap: Apparently she was correcting for an overshooting start by sidesliping - IIRC that was definitely not recommended due to the tendency of the TF-30's to stall. The port engine stalled as a result of the sideslip. She then tried to waveoff from the landing and went to high power on the starboard engine while pulling up too much on the nose - probably distracted by being at low altitude and trying to respond to the compressor stall. By pulling up too much, she stalled and the yaw produced by the starboard engine aggravated the stall causing the departure at low altitude. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxWb68Wk3bY -A better clip w/ LSO audio. He waved her off pretty early. I'm not sure of the specific procedures, I've never gotten hold of an F-14A NATOPS, but that doesn't sound unreasonable. Compressor stalls are aerodynamic stalls just like a wing stall. The blades are at a fixed angle relative to the shafts in the engine, so the only thing that can change is the airflow into the face of the blades. Disruptions in the airflow caused by maneuvering may lead to a compressor stall usually coupled with high power settings (high RPM) or just a rapid application of power (from low to high RPM). A major compressor stall is usually signified by a loud bang, or bangs as the pressure tries to equalize. The stall basically lowers pressure in the front of the engine so that the pressure farther aft in the engine is higher. As we all know from wings flying - high pressure wants to go to low pressure - so, the flow through the engine actually reverses and tries to come out the front. Not what the engine was designed to do. Not to mention, the engine can overspeed (RPMs) and overtemp itself during this violent episode leading to damage and fatigue of components. charlielima Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 SPADS, Cruds, Scooters, Thuds, Phabulous Phantoms, Intruders and Black Ponies in that order. Ah, FJs too but I don't know where to rank them since I either fly the snot out of them or not at all. CL Quote
ironroad Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 Not to sound completely ignorant, but whats the difference in the F-14A/B/D? I noticed that the D doesnt have the winglets/and is faster, but other than that, nothing... http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail.htm Everything you could ever want to know about the Turkey Quote
MigHound Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 With 260 birds in my WOE installation, it's tough to pick, just one aircraft. I'd have to say, my favourite all around American "do-it-all, everything" jet would have to be Dels' F-23A Black Widow II. That bird should have been elected winner of the ATF competition on, just on looks, alone. But, hey, what do I know. I have been in love with the Tornado, for as long as it has been in service, in Euro forces. Amokfloo's IDS model, is a great bird for the ground pounder missions, as is Dave's F-15E/I/K series. But... as I say there are nearly a couple dozen others, I like to play with. Quote
Bulldog Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I was flying MiG-21s a lot until the Flanker, MF F-16s and the F/A-18F showed up. In WOV I still like flying the Thud. Quote

+hgbn Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Any aircraft from the 1950-1970 timeframe. Like the good old warhorses. newer Aircrafts are fine looking and flies nicely but dont have the soul that I like. IF I have to pick one all time favourite it must be a F-4 Phantom II nearly 75 % of all mission I fly is F-4 Quote
fougamagister Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I usually fly the "bad" aircrafts, with bad missiles or bad performances to be proud of shooting the "good" ones Quote
Bulldog Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 An addition to my last post..the no.1 reason I got this sim series was the fact I could fly the F-4. So I have to say I will always have a attraction for that bird. For it's time, it just rocks! Quote

The "Double Ugly" Phantom was kicking butt and taking names for over 40 years...and that's just in the US inventory!! There's hardly been a time since 1958 when it wasn't in service somewhere!!! :) Quote

Echarlie Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Mostly F-4B/C Phantom is the reason I bought this series to begin with. Nothing like tryin to kill those twisting and turning Mig-17's with a 9B F-14 when I dont feel like takin on much of a challenge. F-15C When I feel like just flyin around an killin s**t. Although it is my alltime fav, its just a bit too easy. Just finished reading "Going Downtown" and "Thud Ridge" so im thinkin about puttin some time in the 105. EagleCharlie Quote
Heck Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Just finished reading "Going Downtown" and "Thud Ridge" so im thinkin about puttin some time in the 105. EagleCharlie Definately! I've had some of my most fun missions streaking along just above the weeds in a Thud after a strike, watching the Sam launches whacking other flights and my flight members. Have to remember to tell them to rejoin sometime... Quote

eccles Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I love the Mig-21 because I get so many parachute rides after a F-4 Phantom blows my tail off with a Sparrow missile. Fond of the F-4 though and the Crusader and the Corsair. Now excuse me while I adjust my parachute harness for my next adventure. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I can see my house from up here and whats my old lady doing with the milkman? love you all...................................eccles. Quote
jjddoo Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I love the modern ones - F-22's and F-35's! Waiting for that MiG-29 download to finish for the FrankenSim so I can go blow their tails off! Quote
