Have to wonder why such things never happen in the Swiss or Finnish Armies... Suicide by professional weapon, yes, mass killing of uniformed colleagues, never. Why?

News here mentioned that he was said to have been under PTSD and other issues, they are also echoing some reports by the wich an estimated 2000 servicemembers had taken their lives since 2014 began...how can they possibly be true? Several times more casualties to suicide and PTSD than by the own combat itself?

The number of wounded is many, many times higher than the number of dead. Of course, some of the most damaged mentally are not the ones who suffered serious physical injury.

according to the news he was being evaluated for PTSD and TBI. however he was in Iraq for 4 months at the tag end, and was not listed as having been wounded.

yes macelena, we have lost more to their own hand than to action. at it seems to me that most that have seen action, while having a hard time are less likely to off them selves than those that haven't gone at all.

It will be over, when returning troops are given proper debriefing, and mental checks..and have their weapons removed prior to returning to the United States ;)

He used a personal firearm. Which he wasn't aloud to have on base. You cant check every person coming on base, it would take hours and the duty day would be over. They don't get their military weapons unless its training in the US. So they are taken away. Also why don't Swiss or Finnish armies don't have that problem? They haven't been to war in the 21st Century.

I'll say it again HE killed those people. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. My .45 is sitting locked in my case, its hasn't attacked anyone yet. We need better mental health and a better way to be able to keep people with issues like his to not be able to purchase even a BB gun.

def a mental health issue, not even a go to war issue.  this guy is gonna be the freakin poster child for the "dangerous veteran after multiple deployments."  most of us with multiple tours dont want to kill ourselves and sure as hell dont want to kill alot of others.  if the news is correct this jackass spent four months in Iraq. at the end.  with no combat.   a nut job yes,  dangerous vet   only in the loosest definition of the term.

as for the Swiss and the Finns,  i figured it was cause one group was filthy rich and the other too drunk to aim........

This will end when we have civilized gun control laws in the USA.

SPC Lopez used a .45cal pistol he bought on 04MAR14 at "Guns Galore." A mega gun store right outside the gate in Killeen. Ironically, the same shop that PVT(Formerly Major) Hassan purchased his murder tools at also.

Wake up America.

People snap, it happens. Who knows what will or does send someone over that cliff of no return but it happens. Whether he used a gun, his car, or an explosive someone was going to pay and they did. Gun's aren't the problem, people are the problem. How about we get more civilized people control laws and solve the real problem or maybe just maybe teach people some real life coping skills so their knee jerk reaction isn't shock and effin aw.

Gun control isnt going to fix shit. Chicago is proof of that. How about better help for people so they do not reach that point. Or at least make it so they aren't allowed to get a gun. A few weeks ago armed thugs with knives attacked people at a rail station in China, look that body count. No guns used. People are the problem.

Car's kill more people than guns, ban those. The fork that obese people used to shove too much food in their mouths until it kills them should be banned too.

So what, he bought it legally, he passed a background check. Lets ban the dealership down the road that sold the car to the person down the block of me who hit and killed a child the other day with his new car.

Men make guns.

Guns do not make men.

Men make money off guns. That is the bottom line.

Lopez killed those three guys. He would not of killed them if he had not had the gun. The gun is a form of "instant gratification." A cure all.

Have any of you ever gotten into a passionate argument or disagreement with someone?

To think that he would have killed them anyway with a knife, ball bat, bomb, poison darts or whatever is very immature and irrational thinking.

The only reason a .45 pistol was ever designed or even manufactured was to kill or murder another human.

You can take your kids to school in a car.

Have you ever taken your kids to school with your .45?

"Honey, I am going to take the .45 and run to the commissary."

The mass proliferation of almost instantly available and extremely efficient murder weapons in our nation is our largest public health crisis.

Want to talk Chicago? White gun shop owners in the Chicago burbs are making money hand over fist because of the violence in Chicago.

The real criminals are the merchants of death.

I highly doubt all those gang bangers and gang related killing in Chicago were done by guns legitimately bought in gun shop in Chicago.

"The real criminals are the merchants of death."

You mean people?

Whether you like guns or not Jamie, the point is the people will ALWAYS be the common denominator. He wasn't allowed to have that gun on post. That was the law. Yet he ignored it. So making more laws will work? Or will the next one ignore that one too? People need to be fixed. You can't legislate problems away, because a criminal or a nut job isn't going to follow the laws anyway.

Straw purchasing of weapons for gang activity in Chicago is well documented. So, you are wrong on that point.

I love guns. When I was a Tank Platoon Sergeant do you know how many "guns" I was responsible for? Do you have any idea how many soldiers I have taught to engage and destroy targets with every crew served and individual weapon in the Army's arsenal?

But a gun is a tool. A tool that has no business on the street. We have a suburban arms race in America mainly because men are afraid their co-workers will call them a pussy at work if they don't have 12 of them.

The average citizen in America can barely be trusted not to make action figures out of their own poop much less properly use maintain store a gun.

Until American men grow up and understand that manhood does not mean having the instant ability to kill at their own leisure we will be swimming in a sea of blood.

Back in the day you punched a smartass in the lip. Now, with our over violent culture, you shoot them in the face.

A gun in the hands of a minimally trained civilian is not a symbol of manhood. It is a symbol of a coward.

The tired argument of ,"protect against tyrannical government is BULLSHIT." I would love to see fat, knock off AK and M-16 toting, militia fucks get lit up by a squad from 1-506.

You are right to say that the people are to blame. It is the people who glorify and promote the proliferation of murder weapons in all strata of our society.

Post POW policy has nothing to do with this.

I agree with most of what you say. I'm all for expanded background checks, I am all for intense training before you are allowed to own a gun. I also agree with you on this, the government is not coming for our guns. It isn't happening, its not going to happen. Zealots have it in their heads that is going to happen. It's not so grow the fuck up. Our government has its heads in its asses (Dems, GOP) and its not this lead by a communist socialist regime either. Its just plain broke because no one wants to compromise on shit. The party lines are so set in stone that no one wants to talk to each other. It's sad, really really sad.

Good catch Erik!

I guess I can seem as if I am a dick, but in person I communicate much better!

The main point was the individual has a much greater chance to procure a much more efficient weapon with the way we view guns in America today. There is no denying that fact.

Try this for a solution: Do not grab guns bought paid for, handed down, or whatever from any citizen. Just stop manufacturing and importing.

My point is simple. A truck full of ammonia nitrate, Timothy McVeigh; a couple of backpacks filled with modified pressure cookers, Tsarnaev brothers; a .45-caliber handgun, Ivan Lopez; a Boeing 777, unknown; and the list goes on but I'm sure you get my point. A motivated individual can use anything at his disposal to inflict harm and do damage. You can not stop manufacturing everything because it could possibly be used as a deadly weapon. I'll give you the fact that guns are more common place and accessible for the lazy and less creative. Guns get a bad rap and I don't fear the man with a gun. I fear the crazy bastard willing to create and detonate a dirty bomb in populated areas or the intentional spread of Ebola or any other lethal contagion easily transmitted among the human race. Then again none of these even compare to what mother nature can dish out.

The argument fails because there are only 3 things you can regulate in this matter:

The guns

The ammo

The person

The 2nd Amendment specifically limits regulation on the first and by extension the second, since letting people have guns but outlawing ammo is nonsensical.

You want to advocate regulating people? Is that not by definition then a nanny state, or a police state, or a thought-controlled state, or any of those buzzwords?

After all, wasn't the purpose of the 2nd Amendment to provide a barrier against such a state of regulation in the first place??? So to assert that in order to make the arming of the citizenry less dangerous we need to crack down on THEM, not the guns, is the most blatant case of violation of the spirit of the law in order to uphold the letter if ever I saw it.

The only argument I've offered considering the "policing of individuals" is that we need to give them coping abilities and a respect for life. This doesn't happen at an adult age that needs to be policed. Parent's need to wake up and start parenting their children. We raise these monsters and then scratch our asses when they go out and kill half a dozen people for some stupid reason. You want xbox and playstation to babysit and teach this to your kids, well good luck re-spawning when it goes wrong. My position about removing the guns is if we do it will only shift to some other tool or vehicle because we haven't corrected the problem to begin with.

Paddle some ass and stop worrying about CPS, society will thank you later.

To say "Lopez killed those three guys. He would not of (have) killed them if he had not had the gun. The gun is a form of "instant gratification." A cure all."  Would be a little presumptuous of a statement.

So I ask you:

You know what he was thinking?

Did he tell you this?

If he wanted to kill, he was going to kill, the gun just made it easier for him.

As for the .45 ACP,  yes it was designed to kill people, but the hand cannons made hundreds of years ago which all firearms can trace their lineage were created for the same reason. I work in law enforcement part time still. So, yes I do carry either a S&W model 66 .357 or a S&W M&P 40 compact off duty both of which were created for the same reason as the .45 ACP. I carry almost all the time when out in public, weather I am bringing the kids to school, karate, shopping, or driving my family from New England to Florida.  As for a civilian who has passed all their background checks, it is there legal right to carry a firearm and use such a firearm for any lawful  purpose. I have worked in law enforcement both full time and part time for 20 years. I do not have a problem with legal gun owners. My problem is with the lawmakers that create stupid ill thought out laws that take knee jerk reactions to a new level, and the illegal gun owners that use firearms in commission of a crime. No one will take my right to protect my family, friends, and community from evils in this world, God rest their soul who does. "From my cold dead hands."
