Dave, what Joe Baugher writes looks very congruent with what Delashaw writes.

I haven't seen any evidence for the 104s ONLY covering the egresses on Baugher's site.

The point with "long/ short legs" (range/ combat radius) or loiter time is speeds flown.

When forced to fly signifigantly faster or slower then most efficient cruise, the fuel-flow will rise pretty much, leading to shorter time on-station.

That is not a range-issue per se, however, but a mission-limitation (depending on which a/c is to be escorted).

With higher cruise-speed and less fuel to transfer, time required for refuelling should be somewhat lower for a singe 104 compared to an F-4.

The main issue here is the 104 requiring probe-and-drogue tankers, while the F-4 can rely on "plain vanilla" boom-tankers.

That does not neccessarily have to be a drawback, thugh, as F-105s could use both systems, making it easier for planners to employ the correct tankers...

Dave, i think it would be better to move the F-104 related parts in an own threat for discussion. This threat was originally intended to discuss the chinese J-20.

To play a little bit the role of adocatus diaboli i want ask you a question.

Could it be, that the whole J-20 story is only an Potjemkinian Village, a fake with other words? Could it be, that the chinese give us something to worry about it and it is nothing behind?

Like the F-19 in the bad old times of Cold War.

I think yes and no. Yes because it's a demonstrator aircraft and therefore the capabilities are of course unknown. No because you have to take it seriously because while we're dropping tons of bombs in Afghanistan we still have to look forward and hopefully not get caught flat-footed. Same with the PAK-FA. Looks cool but really is it as capable? Time will tell and we gotta be ready for that time when it is a concern.

Exactly. One can certainly look at programs where much ado was made (MiG 1.42, S-47, Lavi) but nothing actually came of it. The T-50 and J-20 may be demonstrators, may be prototypes that may point in a particular direction of aircraft evolution, but until you see production examples rolling off the assembly line, it's all speculation.

Like Heinkel's Goebbel's He-113?

It worked too, as many RAF and VVS pilots reported fighting it, or so they thought. :good:

I do think China has a vital intrest in a stealth attacker a/c. It is a perfect tool for threatening the neighbours, since they will feel more vunerable in face of an "invisible" attacker. Also, strategy-wise the USN and other nation's navies to a lesser extend are China's greatest fear, and ships have not much to defend themselves against something their radar cannot pick-up. And with the current state of US naval aviation including their rather slow interceptors, the fleets need to detect any attacker very soon to react properly. Stealth might deny just that.

On the other hand one should not hope China will run out of money like the MiG-corporation, or Russia in general. They have the money needed for high-tech military gear. Unfortunatly we are quick to think they do not have the high-tech.

Or the F-35 for that matter...

K, I don't want to be that guy, but that looks a little photoshopped just at first glance... Ooh, I feel so dirty suggesting it may be 'fake'.
