Windows 10 AU Has Just Killed My WOV Flying!

I am really beside myself now. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update was pushed to my computer and now, I've got frame rates in the Low Single Digits! I was running in the Mid 30's before.

 

Jane's WWII Fighters still has great frame rates though so, I don't know what they could've done to cause this. I sure hope AU didn't mess up everybody.

There's been a few threads about this and most of us killed the automatic update to save our Win 7 machines. However you're not the only one who has been victimized by Microsoft policies. It's criminal.

There is a new update and it fixed the issue (at least in my PC)

Yeah, I just did a restore back to before the Anniversary Update. I discovered it wasn't just the WOV, it was the entire system slowed to a crawl. I was surprised Jane's WWII Fighters even ran with no problem.

 

Thanks for the comebacks! I had just started flying on Hard Fuel and actually finishing missions. Great!

So that's maybe why I am now getting crappy framrates with ODS in Win10.

Well, I rolled back to before the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and still have problems with the frame rates. Now it's been upgraded again to the 1607. I've since tried re-running the 2008 Patch to no avail. 

 

One interesting issue I've observed is the extremely heavy Disk usage of 99% after the update. This happened for both the Primary and my WD My Book which I've disconnected. I don't know why the system would be trying to access the My Book so much.

 

If I find a solution, I will post it here.

I'll update my driver and see how it goes, but the last update screwed up my settings (I had to configure the Nvidia again in order for it to be accepted by SF2) and I am getting terribly low fram rates in otherwise normal times, such as dropping bombs or using LGB.

It has always been my experience that most hardware is designed for whatever OS / driver is installed or should I say optimized for that OS / driver. I have never found a machine where an upgrade to an OS (and some drivers), that wasn't a point upgrade to address bugs and such, does more good than leaving your current OS. Updated drivers and operating systems are mostly to make sure newer hardware is compatible with their software. If you don't have that newer hardware very few software upgrades are going to make any noticeable difference. Everyone should start reading the release notes of what an update is and if it doesn't apply to you don't install the extra bloat on your machine. In other words if you have Software Version 9.01 and they release a 9.02 then that's probably to fix something that isn't working as intended or improve something. Those updates are worth your time but to make a version jump say version 9.02 to version 10.1 those updates are for newer features and support of newer hardware. Installing those instruction sets usually bogs down older hardware and is considered bloatware.

 

I think it was crappy of Microsoft to shove Windows 10 down people's throat where most of them had no idea it was coming and the havoc it would cause. Imagine the amount of people that are having to buy new hardware to support the OS. IMO that is a huge mishandling of trust and is unprecedented when it comes to possibly taking someone's livelihood offline. The only saving grace is that the OS can be rolled back to restore your machine's performance to pre-slaughter auto update.

 

Imagine taking your car in to be repaired and the mechanic said, "We have a newer version of your engine so we went ahead and installed it. Unfortunately, you now need a new ECM, electrical upgrade, transmission, new motor mounts, blah blah blah." Imagine the chaos.

 

Remember you own your machine Microsoft doesn't. How dare they make assumptions and or cost anyone hours of unpaid work just because they want to push a newer OS no matter their reasoning or cost.

 

Microsoft you blew it and your credibility is now in the crapper. My bet is you'll see more people turn off your auto update service and you'll end up causing compromises and loss of data in never before seen volumes.

Just an update:

 

I've discovered I get acceptable frame rates in F11 view without the object in closeup. As soon as I zoom in on the aircraft or whatever,m the rates drop significantly.

 

Now, the most disturbing thing I've discovered comes from the Installed Programs window. The "Installed On" date of most of my user installed programs is "09/23/2016". This is all kinds of messed up because I've had most of my programs installed for at least 2 years. This appears to me like all of those programs were re-installed by the upgrade.

 

It looks like I will have to re-install so, VAdm Robert "Robot" Wicker is going to have a big demotion.

Man Windows is screwing up so bad these days I swear I'm wishing Dos were still around. Okay I was being dramatic there. Seriously I said this once and I mean it when I say I could make an OS, it would have so simple to use though.

 

I don't get it. Why do they feel the need to release a new discombobulated version every time you turn around?

 

Like Eric said they're forcing crap on people and eventually the people will push back or walk away.

 

Look at a programs like Open Office made by Apache. That right there kept from spending money on Microsoft's Office Suite. (Something I remember being free)

 

There are so many open source programs out there and I think in time there will be one that will rival Windows and will command the same respect that Windows has/had.

Well, I have re-installed WOV with no change in the slow frame rates. Now my troubleshooting will focus on the DirectX stuff. That's the only thing I can think of that would change and not roll back with a re-install. I'll see.

Same here with WOV, FE, etc.

Tried everything...rollback, directx9, etc.

There's stuff showing into the XBOX direction on the forums (but I've even disabled that one)

...nothing...TW games are no longer playable for me :-(

Well, I still haven't solved the problem but, I have found the problem for me at least. I have the Intel G45 integrated video which I am supposed to be able to dedicate up to 256MB from the available 1759MB total video memory. For some reason I'm now not able to get past 128MB dedicated and I'm also showing 0MB System Video Memory. I think if I figure that out, I will have the problem solved. I will check back once I (Hopefully) fix it.

Well, I've had no luck with this issue at all. I've even tried installing a dedicated video card from Nvidia (GForce 7) to no avail. It honestly seems as if this update has basically raised the hardware requirements for the game. That really sucks. I did get my Combat Flight Simulator 2 working though. I really miss flying the jets. I'm afraid to buy the newer versions of the TW sims for fear of them not working.

Well, after trying to figure out how to get the WOV working under Windows 10, I've found a new love for Combat Flight Simulator 2. The planes aren't as fast but, the hardware requirements aren't as high. I fly the Corsair and I am in the process of re-engineering the flight model to match the technical papers. One of the problems I've always had with CFS2 is the lack of performance of the major player in the sim, the F4U. Obviously, many designers have a problem modeling this aircraft as I've seen other simmers complaining about the same thing across many different sims.

 

In CFS2, I could never get the Corsair up to the service ceiling. I've solved that problem.

Many combat flight sim installs with absolutely no problems as long as instructions are followed for installation of sims. Run CFS3,(9 installs),Il-2 '46,(2 installs), Flaming Cliffs2,Falcon 4.0 BMS,Free Falcon 6. WOFF and ROF. Looking to get the SF2 series and will never change to Win 10 for these sims are most important to me.Wish they would had just improved XP instead of a completely different OS.

Never changing to Windows 10 is a very good idea. The reason I went with PC instead of Mac years ago was the availability of many Flight Sims on the platform. I started flying simulators back in 1982 with 'Jumbo Jet Pilot' on the Atari 800. I made the decision to go with PC in 1992 while I was in Flight School. At that time, there was a version of MS Flight Simulator available on the Mac (MS Flight Simulator 4.0) and I had heard MS was not going to provide a version for the Mac anymore.
