I believe that is an Ilyushin IL-76. I always thought, out of ALL the planes in the world, those suckers are the ones that should have burners.

I have seen those f*ckers do crazy sh*t in the days of the Sarajevo siege.

Although bound together with string and duct-tape, and with pilots of questionable

reputation, these birds did amazing stuff when landing or taking off!

 

Impressive bird, I bet the pilot would have taken a 100ft of mud and grass if he needed it!

I´ve seen them in Trollenhagen (IATA-Code FNB).....these are real russian planes....rasped out of a solid piece of metal

Those planes were designed to be maintained by a conscript army with inadequate (by Western standards) training and short supplies of spares. They succeeded in doing things most Western planes would've collapsed doing.

I'd much rather belly land a Russian jet than a Western one, that's certain!

There's a famous pic running around with Putin holding a gold bar. Some say Russia is buying gold, or at least its own mine prodution, so that could explain the takeoff.

 

Interesting. I know of one F-106 and an Su-9 that landed by themselves after pilot ejection, engines running. Both flew again.

Everybody's a wise ass when your not strapped to the jet. Used to be a story about F-84s, which were notorious for long takeoff rolls, that the pilot had a grass container installed just ahead of the nose gear that he could release when he got nervous on an extended takeoff roll and scare the jet into the air. I think the Peruvian pilots discovered the same thing with their initial batch of Su-7s, very underpowered as well. Seems like they could carry ammunition for the guns and no external stores, including fuel tanks or one 500lbs bomb and no ammunition and make it off of the runway (Peru is high in the Andes). Any hiccups with the turbine or lack of micromanagement of the aircraft total weight and they were in the dirt at the far end of the runway!
