Recommended Posts

So, all news I can give are, I have the file links from Russo, will download them this night and distribute inside GMG. After this we can post some nice progress pics and any infos about this project.

The GMG has some interesing stuff as WIP that`s sure and Russo did a great job on this bird.

Ooooooooo the Banana is coming the banana is coming.... I would love to help out but I dont know how to mod or skin but looking into it but if the banana bomber comes out be great for an all Brit campaign as outlined in the book I named earlier for example especially if we get the Central America map to play with...

Carrier battle group with Phantom's and Buccaneer's to stop the spread of comunism to the British Protectorates in the region... E.g Belize the Caribean Islands based around 1968 that way we could use the Swifts as well... Reason for a Brit task force the Yanks are doing over the peace loving Commies of North Vietnam and dont have assets to spare... okay I know its a rough idea but its the start...

Thank you for continuing this as I would have enjoyed working on it but I have zero skills at modding or skinning... :clapping:

But I will be planning on releasing a campaign based around this aircraft and the Royal Yacht Club... sorry Royal Navy... as I outlined above. If anyone has any ideas and no there will not be any US units just RN vs Cuban/Communist forces in the Carribean if Dave releases the Carribean Map...

I have heard that nothing could beat the Thud or the Aardvark in the weeds. I cannot wait to put the Buc in Vietnam and see how it fares on a classic Thud mission.

Both are faster in the weeds than the Buc. The F-105D by almost 200 mph.

During red flag exercise that bucc took part in...the yankees couldnt catch the buccs...apparently they flew so low no one dared go in after them, and managed to outscore the usaf with the low level bombing, and getting away cleanly......I recall a quote from some USAF jock that he wished they had thought of the buccaneer instead of the brits...lol

I will have to find the article

How long for? I'm guessing both the Vark and the F-105 had to go into burner to go faster than the Bucc at sea level (Bucc VMax at sea level M0.92) whereas the Bucc only had dry thrust and had ridiculous levels of endurance, at least for a European aircraft! I'm thinking the other difference may be training, in that the Bucc crews pretty much spent their whole time at 250' and lower so it was their playground.

Be interesting to find out, I need to dig out my Wings of Fame with the feature on the Bucc and some stuff on their time at Red Flag.

I can clearly remember seeing film clips of the Buccaneer during Red Flag with commentry by incredulous USAF bods who just couldn't believe what they were seeing. This was shown on the BBC 1 'Nationwide' programme in 1977 (give or take a year or two).

Yep. Bucc's like their pilots last longer unlike the quickie competition.

Bucc's in Red Flag... As I spent time in the RAF was talking to a couple of Drivers of aforementioned bird and the SAM guys at Red flag had a guy stand on top of the Radar Van looking for Rooster Tails...

Also one of the aggressor pilots got real annoyed and chased a Bucc down low and was trying to get a gun kill and he had to pull up as he found he was flying towards a cloud made of rock...

The only problem with the Bucc was the avionics which when it came out where outstanding... but 30 years later not so great... should have given the Bucc the Tornado avionics kit and it would have made it a demon to catch... also a Thud / Vark could only get to their top speed low down clean and with burner which tends not to help... The Bucc could do .92 at 100ft with a full bag of weapons and keep doing it for about a week less than a Tu-95 could stay in the air... only joking. A standard Bucc sortie could last up to 5 hours without tanking... and spending most of it at extreme low level...

There is also another one from Red Flag that a Bucc got a F-5 with a simulated 1000lb retarded bomb release from low level that was a standard defensive tactic for a Buccaneer. Hell even the USN wanted to buy the Bucc but they where over-ruled so they ended up with the A-6 though a good bird not as fast or as long legged as the Bucc...

I will look into more info for anyone if they require it. I am a Bucc devotee along with A-4's oh and of course the Vulcan aka THE TIN TRIANGLE ...

There should have only been one replacement for the Bucc and thats another Bucc not that Tornado piece of pap...

No one is doubting that it was a great plane but as usual there is a gap between myth and reality. Listening to you guys you would think that the Buc was the only plane in the world that could fly below 250 feet. In fact the A-7 is just as fast at sea level, has better endurance and a better nav/attack system (INS and computer, Buc probably wins on radar). And the US Navy never seriously wanted to buy the Buc over the A-6. If you think about it, that is completely ridiculous--you are suggesting that the USN would trade the most advanced all-weather attack aircraft in the world (at the time) for the Buc?

Again, I love this plane and can't wait for it to be in game, but we should deal in reality with regard to it.

Skippy is right IMO...its the pilots that make the difference (and their training) more so than the plane itself.

Very true on the Pilots etc... All I was quoting was what I remembered from talking to 2 Bucc drivers and the jet was officially tested by the USN and the USN Pilots loved it... maybe I misquoted but its been a few years and the silver moments are getting more and more lol

As to the A-7 I was saying that the one major thing the Bucc needed was a better Avionics suite... Also remember the A-7 would normally go in with escort etc... whereas the Bucc went in alone or in pairs. In the 70's and 80's they where still the low-level jet to beat though...

But as far as a British Jet goes its very very tough to beat for low level strike especially for a Jet from the 1950's

Anyway I never argue as anything that flies always looks good even the A-10....

Hey now, stop moving the goal post around!

You can't spank what you can't catch was the point. But, as far as endurance, I wouldn't discount the F-111's low-level endurance--it is also equipped with turbofans, which is one of the factors giving the Buc such good low-level economy.

But, as I said above, I think your point about the pilot's spending so much time training at low level is the key to the plane's success and the foundation for this mythology surrounding it.

This and the Lightning are two of the coolest jets produced by anyone during that time, no doubt. As I said, I love it! :good:

The Navy wanted the Bucc?

There is some anecdotal talk that seems to indicate that the US Navy looked at the program. Its extremely vague and nothing ever came of it, if this so-called interest ever really existed.

Probably the same way they looked at the Mirage G, only to have a sense of what other countries were doing and trying to get ideas and elements for their own requirements later on.

As I understand it the USN interest was along the lines of 'if the A-6 turns out to be a turkey what can we get instead'.

I wouldn't knock the Bucc's Nav/Attack suite, it was very comprehensive, if geared primarily for ASuW, and had a range of bombing modes as well as a nav suite the equal of the first generation INS. I need to read up on the A-6 again to compare the two as I'm currently deep in Buccaneer research but from memory they're both pretty much equal in most areas if you compare similar generations, although the later versions of the A-6 may have had the edge on the later S.2Bs I need to read up on the various mods they did and didn't receive.

Buccs and Intruders complimented each other nicely... the Buccs were faster and longer ranged at low altitude, but the A-6's were the true "all weather" bird, still able to hit her targets when everybody else simply stayed on the boat. As for the 111 - another excellent low level striker, with an attack capability that probably fell somewhere in between the two (FC could tell us!). And don't forget - if the UK Treasury bean-counters hadn't cancelled the F-111K, they'd probably never become associated with the Blackburn - and the fights in the officer's mess' regarding who was better would still be going on! As for the A7 - for an aircraft who's role started out as "light strike" they more than proved they were a great design. Ah, the good old days when the good guys actually flew more than 1 type of aircraft from a single company...
