I've been getting horrifying FPS freezes when the new MF MiG-29 appears - I mean, real freeze-frame stuff. It's the only aircraft that does that on my admittedly not that recent but still perfectly adequate rig. Is anybody else getting the same thing? And can anyone suggest a fix? Even at long ranges - several miles - I get this problem, so it doesn't seem to be just a problem of LODs.

Don't know man, it's one of the smoothest rides here...

Now skins are rather big but I have ridiculous ammount of memory so I might not feel it. If I had any problems with it I would first try to downsize the skins, this was a real problem solver when I had only 1GB of RAM...

No prob here, as I've been running the MF MiG-29 external model for well over 3 years, and the cockpit for over a year. Back then, I ran it on an Athlon-Barton-based system, with a 256 mb Radeon X800XL video card, and 1 GB of system memory, and still had no issues.

Just a guess.

In the skin folder, Texturset file, see if Reflection=0.0000

If it is, try a low nonzero number like 0.10.

That 0 caused freeze and game dumps for me on some planes when looking from external view at some relative SF sun/moon angles.

It isn't the texture size, as I've got a number of similarly heavy aircraft... But I've just noticed the Marcfighters Su-27 doing the same thing. Could it be a missile thing? Unlikely, but it's all I can think of.

Meanwhile, I'll have a look at the texture.ini file.

Hi, this is my Mig 29 file,it works just fine ( I have a laptop), no problems at all...

[TextureSet]

Name=Cuba 231st FS

Nation=Cuba

Squadron=

Specular=0.300000

Glossiness=0.100000

Reflection=0.000000

And I wish to congratulate the Mirage Factory guys, their work is simply amazing...This plane and cockpit is astonishing :ok:

Can't wait for other releases...

A new fan... :yes:

Raaghhhh... There is only one common point between Marc's SU-27 and TMF Mig-29 is the FM. I did it :this::biggrin: :biggrin:

You don't suppose an FM can cause a CTD?

I've been seeing some wierd stuff during B-1B prototype FM testing. I've been getting a consistent CTD if I try to stall with the gear down...but not with the gear up. Stock terrain, stock SFP1 install. Yet, this CTD has been inconsistent across users.

It isn't CTD-ing - it's that FPS drops to serious single-frame rates. As when you have about 40 aircraft in the air in front of you. The moment the MiG or Su passes out of the screen view, FPS are back where they should be.

That's usually caused by fairly large skins (more than 1024 by 1024). It can also be caused by aircraft exported with the 'decal' option...which gets rid of decal bleed, in exchange for lower frame rates.

That's my theory anyway...

I run a subpar rig which is a P4 with 2.4ghz 2GB DDR RAM and a 256 MB AGP Nvidia card and my MIG-29 with the skins resized to 1024 and model set on high with cockpit mirrors on and 8 times AA runs just fine, but while playing I almost always shutdown all the unnecessary process like anitvirus, firewall software etc ofcourse I disconnect my internet connection as well whilst the firewall etc is shutdown, really does help by significantly lowering the load on my CPU. Give that a try, might help. Cheers !

Thanks for all the advice - I'm going to have to work this through bit by bit using a proper mission. So far it's been something which has cropped up from time to time in "Quick Combat" mode, so I haven't had all the options under control. But it is only with the MiG-29 and Su-27 as far as I can tell. In any case, resizing to 1024 will help whether that is the trouble or not. I'll let you know if I find something. I though it might be the damage/explosion effects, but that would be for all aircraft. Keeping trying...

Could be rig, because I've had a few escort flights of MiG-29s and no framerate loss, even flying it I have no significant FPS hit. Hell it's better than LOMACs, which one of the main reasons I didn't fly it was it was an FPS hit.

Or some other factor which comes into play only with thses two models - an effect or something. Like I said, I need to fiddle around. I was just wondering if I was the only one - all the other MF aircraft I have run perfectly, so it came as a surprise.

The Mirage factory MiG-29 and Marcfighters Su-27 have several 'lower detail LODs' included. So the game renders a simpler (thus faster) aircraft 3D model when it is at a distance. I am flying these two types alot past week and have no framerate issues. But that is without 'shadows'.

PS. For fun I put a patched WOI on my retro Pentium-III-S 1.0GHz yesterday, It runs reasonably at 20..40 fps, at mostly-low settings 800x600x32 2xAA. :)

Gerwin, that's the thing. As they have reduced poly LODs, then they shouldn't be doing this sort of thing at all.

Someone said weapons... That is something they may have in common...

I noticed the sudden FPS drop as well with the mig29, which is an amazing piece of work by the way! Major Kudos to the MF guys :good:

Anyways it usually happens when I change the view to looking at the lower-front of the aircraft or if i do the fly by view and it's looking head on. Figured it was something to do w/ being such a demanding model... I have no idea about that stuff : ]

I don't have the MiG-29 installed but I have had issues in the past related to the DecalMaxLod numbers. [located in the MiG-29 Decal.ini] It might be worth checking. Example:

[Decal001]

MeshName=fuselage_middle

DecalLevel=0

DecalFacing=RIGHT

FilenameFormat=Insignia

Position=-2.01,-0.08

Rotation=0.0

Scale=1.65

DecalMaxLOD=3....................Check these numbers and try reducing them. Small decals can probably be reduced to 2 or 1.

I'm back to wondering if it's not some effect or other...

There are hardly any decals on the 29; the markings are only for serial numbers. That won't slow it down here, not in this case at least. Worth looking at on some, though.
