F-35 meh But...a contrarian view would say that looks can conceal, especially when everybody hates and votes on a look. Probably the most silly and awkward looking planform is reverse taper. Republic's XF-91 had both a faster supersonic wing *and* a slower flying wing than any other fighter at the time. I wonder about roll rate though. Imagine what aviation would be like if reverse taper took hold in the 50s. Worse, what would a reverse delta planform look like, a mach2 butterfly?

Another one I didn't know, just found this... Beryl Erickson::
-
They are rounding up distant relatives according to the latest NW.
-
Mako:: Very interesting. I had no idea. I guess it would have worked well as a common man's F-111.

Dang Wrench, I always had my DEMs backed up since the beginning. ... multiple independent backups that is. You can import exported stuff. That's how I did the 12MMM, twice in fact....one for making a butchered "fake" height map for tiling and one "real" height map for generating the 3D map. I not sure what you are trying, so apologies if this isn't helpful, but why not import 2 horizontal arranged or 4 horizontal+vertical arranged DEM files at one time? like this...it should be big enough, no? 12 ...or... 12 34

A2A Missile Use in Vietnam ?
Lexx_Luthor replied to Geary's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
CHorse:: My day began with a hard laugh from a Migbuster poast, and my day ends on hard laugh from a Crazyhorse poast. Thanks man. I actually stopped and laughed hard when I read that, as with MB's poast this morning. I should come by here more often. Ya'll raised a point I haven't considered:: if the NAVY team feared MiG-17 Atolls, cos its what we would have done ... NAVY was the first to load Sidewinders on USAF F-86s in 1958 given to Formosa, after all .... but as Gep poasted, -17 would not be a good match for Atolls so they were not used. Now, this could be related to the lower performance/construction quailities of the early Atolls combined with the lower MiG-17 performance in actual use, um, I guess. In my stargetic SF game I have not worked on in a year, I had always assumed MiG-17s would not have Atolls, even if the PVO got "gifted" samples in 1956 like the real guys did in 1958. It just didn't make sense for some reason, even in my game. Intuition maybe lol? -
MiG-31 interception attempts on SR-71s
Lexx_Luthor replied to MigBuster's topic in Military and General Aviation
Yea one A-12 got nicked by a SAM over Vietnam, and the PVO had nuke SAMs. The Soviets did have plans for nuc armed air-air interceptor missiles, starting with the R-8 but as far as I know, these ideas never went anywhere. One theory I have is the rash of East bloc defectors in MiG-15s and things like that in the 1950s put a damper on equipping interceptors with nucks. In my strategic game they'll have em, kinda, since I haven't worked on my SF in over a year. ...yea, there was a PVO Su-9 defection in the early 1960s, to Turkey maybe, I forgot. Don't hear much about that. And of course Belenko too. -
If I recall, that's kind of like how Niels Bohr got out of Nazzie controlled Norway or Denmark, I'll have to brush up on that escape-apade. ---- ...okay...he already escaped to Sweden, but needed to overly Nazzie controlled land to Britain... Wikipedia:: ...at very high altitude for safey. It goes on to say, Bhor couldn't hear the order to turn on oxygen so he passed out for 3 hours. ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niels_Bohr#Manhattan_Project

lol MB I laughed out loud at that, and thinking about it, first time this morning. You started my day.

SnailMan:: Its to show who is Boss and stop alternative thought. This seems a pretty big deal if you follow the Nightwatch. Czech it out, starting from the last few updates. ~> http://www.kforcegov.com/Services/IS/NightWatch.aspx From the commentary in the Nightwatch 2013-12-10 :: Chang was friendly with the Chinese when Kim Chong-il was not. Also fascinating is the next 2013-12-12 comentary analysis on the NK press explanation of the execution. The show must go on.

Real world problem...
Lexx_Luthor replied to beachav8r's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
That's why I set my visibility distance over The SF to tens of thousands of kms -- to catch even more distant aurora and over horizon flash. For other surfacians like me, what They see up high...the deep colours and clarity is amazing. FlyingDutchman ~> http://www.apilotsview.com/?p=927 -

Interesting pic, thanks. Also, giggle google "contrail shadows" and the link to images is really nice. ... ooo here is some nice pics just like yours. ~~> http://www.patterico.com/2010/12/12/more-photos-of-that-weird-contrail-from-last-month/ -
Wrench, why 120 scale? I didn't think you could use real nav maps for this game, except near the equator: WoV for example. What did TK use for WoE planning map? If you could use this...its 3dem offerin sinusoidal projection which may not correspond to nav maps you are using, but if its better, I can change colours to 8bit Tooth Extractor format. 36 degrees max ~~> http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d178/Lexx_Luthor/NorthSea2.jpg 36 degrees, or less, serves just on pizza slice, so no gluing slices required.

Polish MiG-21s go to Draken in USA
Lexx_Luthor replied to MigBuster's topic in Military and General Aviation
Best sellem on the private market. Butt, as multiple -21 owner Dave Sutton points out, they are such a pain, you get it out of your system and dump them for more reasonable earlier MiGs...or J's, being higher quality Chinese MiGs in his experience. -
SFP1 running on Windows 7
Lexx_Luthor replied to Wilches's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Did it work BP (Before Patch)? What I do, is every time I copy over 1.0, since I never "re install" from CD cos I never have to, I always run the game, then Patchup, run it again, to see if everything goes right, then start making my changes. Never leave the Lexx Never let anyone on board the Lexx Never change a stock StrikeFighters 1.0 until you know it flies okay. -

Thought so lol. Yea I'll bookmark that thanks -- Borowitz Report ~> http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/ On a related note to that onion~esque twitter story of today (24 April), apparently AP (Associated Press) twitter got hacked and there was a false report of white house bomb attack sending computer traded markets plunging. ~> from Karl Denninger Maybe Felonious, But Not Erroneous

11 April, New Yorker ... seems Onion~esque, but apparently they couldn't get their new missile started because they upgraded computer. North Korean Missile Test Delayed by Windows 8 If true, they probably couldn't find the Start button, which explains why he looks like he (the boss) is yelling into the mic for them to find it so they can Start the missile.

I think these are the front and back cover of a manual on the missile. Note the 1950s (or 1930s?) "science fiction" art style. Always loved that. Interesting that style made its way to the Soviet Onion. The tilted text field on the back cover, how often you see that? Yea, forgot, I can't read a date on that, but assume that was written in the mid-late 50s or early 60s, during the...Kruchev (sp? ) Thaw so cover artists maybe felt a bit experimental. -
Nuke Effects
Lexx_Luthor replied to ezlead's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Wow, its still alive. Years back, maybe. I severly simplified the effects because I ran a low end budget video card at the time. That's changed, and the effects could be WAAAY way better. I'd love to do it again for SF-1 if you fellas/fellattes can port it to SF-2. I never went beyond about 3 days with SF2, so can't help here. Stuck on SF-1...not even that...no time any more after last year's summer push to get a proto-map half working. SF-0 for me now. I did a big write up on the ideas, here http://bbs.thirdwire.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3970 for those who care to look at the grafix theory and improve the lot.
