  1. How are you starting the game? are you running it by double clicking the new exe you created?
  2. I would dispute that as Ive already said - despite the MiG-17s advantage if the F-8 was a more agile airframe in the horizontal and vertical than the F-4 it should have made it easier for pilots to get a better 180 shot. By 1972 the missiles, radar, and radar coverage had improved. Also some F-4s had Combat Tree so there was a vast improvement in tech/avionics which also was a factor. Not sure how it wasnt a match for MiG-21s - the F-8 was hardly slow - you could almost say they were comparible. Unless you are referring to F-4s providing escort where the speed might have come in handy. In a lot of cases though it seems MiG-21s just appeared from nowhere, fired their missiles, then got out of there before the escorts could do anything. Yes you will notice I have already mentioned that a few times in this thread - but that also comes down to engagements as I have said above - i.e how many times did F-105s and F-8s get the chance to go after MiGs! There is always the pilot factor but I still think they might have done better in the F-8 during the early time period - but thats just me. Anyway not glad I bothered mentioning the F-4 at all in the example above - which after all replaced the F-8 and had many good points.
  3. The F-8 is being used as an example of a lighter more agile/energy type in combat over SEA with AIM-9 and gun armament and it (or its pilots) did very well in terms of kills per engagement (the best of any US fighter apparently). The pilots were good - but unlike in the F-4B/C/D they could get on a MiGs tail easier (for example even when its spotted by the MiG) giving a much better chance of an AIM-9B kill - and fall back on the guns if the missiles failed. Even trained F-4 pilots are still dependent on poor missile technology in RT along with the ROE - with a mix of fantastic AIM-4D, AIM-9B, and AIM-7D/Es . They might have got shot down less knowing how to fight the MiG-17/21s - but you cant say the kill rate would have been any better - the AIM-7 would always have to be fired in close - and an experienced F-4B/C/D driver still needs to get on the tail of a MiG to use the G limited AIM-4D/9B - not so easy in an early F-4 if a MiG knows you are there - luckily in most cases they probably didn't. Things would have improved when better missiles came along - which they did anyway.
  4. If you had the trigger working before - make sure you are flicking on the Arm switch in the pit - some training missions already have it armed from startup. no idea on the x45 myself sorry. What settings are you trying refuelling on ? If you are running patch 1.013 (you should be) then even in realistic mode you do get a bit of help stabilizing with the tanker - but it made things a lot easier for me compared to how it was.
  5. Have a great day
  6. Thats the bolt that was holding our economy together - can we have it back
  7. Not sure - never used it - it listed as Alt and ' in game. One way to try is change the key mapping in the setup and then try it - then you will know
  8. Yes should be the same for all Win 7s
  9. Its from "F-5 Tigers Over Vietnam" by Anthony J Tambini He claims - as part of Phase 2 of the Skoshi Tiger project, flying from DaNang, they flew primarily CAP/MiGCAP over North Vietnam, with bombing missions in the North also - typical flight times were 4 - 6 hours with A-A refuelling. Not loads though - North Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos sorties were totalled 571 together.
  10. No should be okay with Oct 2008 You need to install it outside of program files, run it as admin and change the compatibility mode for what its worth if you can. They run largely okay but have seen a few CTDs - which you have to put up with - or get SF2
  11. If he was being sarcastic about using MiG-21s - he's not being sarcastic about the other claims in that footnote - just lazy or intentionally misleading perhaps. Both the USAF F-4s and F-105s needed A-A refueling in and out - so thats kind of a given whatever Tactical jet is used - Guess he thinks you cant put a probe on a MiG. The F-102 and F-104 were used to Escort bombers over USAF route packs for a period of time - maybe an improvement on the F-100D. Both are lighter energy fighters like the MiG-21 (although the MiG might have been more agile). Point being they got to North Vietnam okay. Dont know where the F-5 was used over the North - not enough information - but it still got there (apparently). Anyway the closest US fighter was the WVR F-8 - which could use energy, radar and to some extent agility, and AIM-9s - and had the highest kills per engagement ratio in Rolling Thunder (F-8 Crusader units in action) - so although the VPAF "claimed" a lot it performed as well or better than the F-4 in that period. Obviously no where near the Mirage 3 though in terms of kills - that had more targets admittedly :) oh could go on forever with that pos paper! - but wont ---------------- 1) Combat tree came in about 71 from what I know with about a 60 mile range - but only have accounts of it being used on F-4D/E and Iranian F-14As. Think it changed the radar symbology - but not to sure whether it was a 2 man op. 3) You might say that unlikely if it had to be done manually - which is why they try to automate it all now - back then the backseater could monitor the RHAW scope, look out side and put out chaff. 4) Depends on the fuel consumption, weight and drag of the airframe - and how much thrust you need to keep your energy up.

    Fraps

Start up Fraps - it must be running when you are playing the game. Before starting the game customize the settings - ie the video capture key. Make sure none of the hotkeys in the settings are the same as keys used by the game. When in game you press your capture key to start and end recording. the video is saved where you specify.
  13. This today from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8637978.stm RAF Typhoon training halted as ash found in engines Operational Typhoons are not affected by the MOD's suspension of flights Training flights on RAF Typhoons in Lincolnshire have been suspended after ash deposits were found in the engines of four aircraft. The fleet is being checked at its base in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. An RAF spokesman said the Typhoons were "very high performance jets" so staff were "just being extra cautious". The move comes amid recriminations over the costs of a six-day airspace shutdown caused by volcanic ash drifting south from Iceland. It comes as thousands of Britons are continuing their slow journey back to the UK after being caught up in flight suspensions. Controllers say airline traffic is approaching 90% of normal levels. According to the BBC's Richard Scott, the Civil Aviation Authority has pointed out that military planes fly much faster and suck in far more air than their civilian counterparts. It says the work done with manufacturers to clear the UK for flying again did not factor in military jets, which are "a whole different world". The CAA also says conclusions should not be drawn from the RAF's statement about the air-worthiness of civilian aircraft. It adds that the all-clear for civilian aircraft to return to the skies still stands and there have been no reports of any ash damage. Almost all flights across Europe are expected to go ahead on Thursday.

  15. With Track IR 3 and Track IR 4 - this is what I do In game, go to setup->controllers and untick TRACKIR Moves 2D cockpit view - or something like that. Thats right - I switch it off - but feel free to experiment with it on - I tried....
  16. They are in the downloads section http://forum.combatace.com/files/category/158-a-10-warthog-skins/ - follow the instructions
  17. But you are talking about an F-105 as a very long range escort bomber - which Im not saying was not feasible - but for a start it needs to be where the bombers are to protect them - so running away at low level (which might be its only option ) is where as a MiG-21 driver Id be happy to see it. Secondly the time it can spend in afterburner itself would probably be less than the Interceptor which is only about 10 miles from a friendly runway. What is this bloke on - Accuses people of using a false analogy - then uses a totally stupid one instead! Does this boyd book actually mention the US would have been better off only using MiG-21s then - can someone confirm it actually states that?? Im sure there was a reason for having different types of aircraft Notice that he doesnt mention that the USAF did deploy short range fighters with poor bomb loads - F-104C, F-102A, and F-5C over North Vietnam (with varying results admittedly)- but I mean how did they get there with such short ranges - Of course a MiG-21 with a refuelling probe and some bombs - thats the same thing isnt it. Versions of the MiG-21 and MiG-17 carried bombs in North Vietnam service - they were used to bomb the south during the 1974 invasion - and MiG-17s made attempted attacks on US shipping (According to Osprey books)
  18. A way to change how a wav file is played you mean? Not that I know of - How do the files in question play if you just run them in Media player or similar?
  19. At a guess the MiG-21 probably doesnt pull as many Gs as quickly as the more agile Su-27 and MiG-17 - thus you dont see the effect as often. There was a universal setting in gen 1 games it was in aircraftobject.ini - goes in the "objects" folder - so you will need to try it out yourself. 20. Saw the TV series in the 80s, have the novel by Derek Robinson, and have had the DVD of the series for a few years. That footage does not look familiar to me - anyway don't expect many expensive flying stunts from an ITV series. IMO its still one of the best films/dramas Ive ever seen - far superior to The BOB (despite it not being fact based) - some of the characters are just brilliant - and I cant see how you wouldnt find it entertaining. fyi In the book Hornet Squadron (not real AFAIK) use Hurricanes. Edit: Actually The Michael Caine take off bit in BOB rocks and is the only piece of comparable script IMO.
  21. Drool - great work! The yellow bits look pretty good too!
  22. Come to think of it - maybe this would be more in line
