serverandenforcer Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 So, I'm going head to head against a flight of Fulcrums in a F-15C (with those weird mirrors). I already fired off all of my AMRAAMs and took out half of the enemy's flight. I'm now moving in closer and fast to lock up with my 9Ms. My flight has already gotten the green light to engage air threats, so the field is pretty much squared. One of my 9Ms begins tracking a Fulcrum next to the one that I targeted so I send it off. It doesn't hit, but it gets that guy to break off and away from my target. My target breaks as well, allowing me to move in on his rear. My second 9M locks onto him and I release it. The target gets taken out seconds later. I then turn back to the other bandit that I shooed away. As soon as I do, I see a puff of smoke (Lexx's missile smoke mod btw) drop from underneath him. My RWR isn't singing, and I'm going head to head with the target, so it couldn't be an IRM, right? So, naturally, I'm thinking the missile isn't for me, but for one of my wingies. I keep flying straight at the target (with the intention to blow through past him), but begin to notice that the puff of smoke isn't streaking away anywhere fast, but infact is getting bigger. I just then realized that it is an IRM for me. I slam down on the stick to dive for the hard deck, but just as I do, I get blasted to pieces (going head on with a missile doesn't do well for structural integrity). Game over. So, I just finally accepted the fact that I'm the worst combat sim pilot ever, and wanted to make it official. Btw, this isn't the only time this has happened to me. I've ran into this scenario several times before. Sometimes my brain works well on some of those situations and I dropp chaffs/flares and jink when I see something like that happen, avoiding catastrophe. But most of the time, I've found my self just staring at the target (especially in a knife fight), seeing it fire a missile at me, and do nothing but watch the pretty white smoke trail come charging after me (it's like, hey, check that out, he fired a missile... oh s***, that has my name on it). Gee, I'm worse than AI pilots. So yep, I suck! Quote
DaSpungie Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 yup thats a bugger never give the ai bvr and counter measures i tried 4 cutlasses vs 12 mig-17's they toasted us i got 2 the the shot me after they killed my entire flight so be careful out there Quote
Lexx_Luthor Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 In the book Fire In The Sky, Eric Bergerud writes of mid-war Japanese pilots becoming confused in large furballs, hesitating to manuever to immediate threats. I'll guess that hurt the Japanese more because they flew slower against the generally faster teamwork slash attacks used by the Ussians. That, and lack of large team tactics and an insufficient radio comm culture, and probably many other things. Glad the smoke worked! I made the smoke to dazzle the player into rapturous awe. Should modern missiles smoke like that? I was thinking about classical missiles that I know a little about, not post-modern missiles. You must be real pilot. An F-16 pilot told story about big strike into Iraq (1991). He got a SAM, spotted it, but to manuever he had to drop tanks. He felt the need to watch the tanks drop away, having never seen it before. When he was Happy, he turned attention back to the SAM again. He must be real flight simmer. A tank is a terrible thing to waste, but maybe have pilots drop at least one (1) tank at least one time during training before somebody starts a war? Quote
ONETINSOLDIER Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 yeah, right, you cant have my title as the worst, its mine mine mine Quote
Alexander51 Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Hell I feel like that when I'm NOT playing! Quote
Stwa Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Great story BTW. However, I doubt that makes you the worst combat sim pilot. As a general rule though, when you are out of sparrows, RTB, no matter what TACC says. Quote
+Spectre_USA Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 (edited) Concur with Swta. I carry a pair of 9's for dire emergency, self preservation mode only when flying an Eagle or a Phantom, and a few others. Knife fights are for suckers, BVR the bad guys, reverse course, get in the weeds and haul ass home... PS- Of course the lumbering, defenseless cargo or non-tail gunned bomber is always a viable target of 9'ers, as long as there is no escort. Edited June 12, 2008 by Spectre_USA Quote
Doghouse Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 You got pasted by one of those all aspect heat seakers. Damn those things are sneaky. I had to die a couple times before I figured out what was happening. Never take nothing for granted, cept maybe the ground being hard. Quote
+FastCargo Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Should modern missiles smoke like that? I wonder that myself...but then looking at that video of the MiG-29 taking out the UAV, that missile plume looked HUGE! FastCargo Quote
Lorddemonicus Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Hey men, you shouldn't be so rude to yourself, that has happend to me so much times, and I didn't care about it, just click on repeat mission, kill 'em all and learn about the experience that's the only thing you can do, you are not the worst sim combat pilot, it's sure that there are pilots worst than you are, so don't worry and try it again Quote
macelena Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Your RWR sings when you are fired a IRM? Mine sings only for Radar mssl´s Wich enemy was it? how IA? the first time i was downed was in my Baz against MiG-23MLD and i never knew how it happened, so i earned the nick of "Worst" Quote
serverandenforcer Posted June 12, 2008 Author Posted June 12, 2008 (edited) Your RWR sings when you are fired a IRM?Mine sings only for Radar mssl´s Wich enemy was it? how IA? the first time i was downed was in my Baz against MiG-23MLD and i never knew how it happened, so i earned the nick of "Worst" Regarding the RWR, what I was refering to was that the RWR wasn't going crazy because if the missile that was fired from the Fulcrum was an AHM/SAHM, it wasn't locked onto me. If it was an AHM/SAHM that was fired at me, I would be getting a steady tone from the RWR. The issue with the IRM came into play because I was facing towards the missile, which means my hot a** was facing away from the missile (which I thought at the time would significantly reduce the chances of me being locked on by an IRM to pretty much about nil). So in other words, I took all the lack of signals and my position towards the missile as an indication that I was still O.K.... which obviously I wasn't. Would definately be nice if the RWR acted as an IRWR though. Edited June 12, 2008 by serverandenforcer Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Definitely, not the worst! I remember such having such experiences. The funniest was in a Syrian MiG-21 in 1982. I managed to down a kurnass and a F-16 and began to get interested in a Kfir ahead. The said one just turn to face me, drop a Python in face to face and boom. In a few seconds he took care of me. MAKO69 Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 (edited) You flew straight, you assumed it wasn't for you, and you pushed forward on the stick, for the most part aircraft don't like being pushed down. Pull, role, break turn into missle. Never fly straight and level for more than 15 seconds in the combat area. You have chaff and flares use them, before you input to the stick. Get out of afterburner if you can. Your not a bad sim pilot you just need practice. Later be safe. Edited June 12, 2008 by MAKO69 Quote
WarlordATF Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 I don't think you did anything that the rest of us haven't. With the smoke mods and stuff it looks so cool that you just have to watch, Just don't make a habit of it. Its like when i shotdown a Raptor with a Su-22, i got so fixated on the target that when i got the guns on him, he was so close that the debris took the tail off my plane. Some people knock this sim and say its too simplistic, but depending on what mods you install, TW Sims can be as good as any of them and it looks good doing it. Sometimes i ignore the mission and just go zipping through the mountains and canyons just for the fun of it. I love doing that in a F-16 or Raptor over the So Cal Terrain because of the speed/handling and lay of the land. Sure i might get a mission failure but i figure i might as well enjoy the eye-candy once in awhile! Quote
+JediMaster Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Solid rocket motors smoke when ignited, it's just that generally they burn out long before impact. Should you be close enough that the motor hasn't burned out (which with an IRM is probably impossible, I think they only burn a couple of seconds), the missile will still be trailing when it hits you. So you might see smoke from a Sidewinder or Archer or such because you're in WVR when they fire at you, but you'll not see it from the BVR ones unless the guy is firing right at minimum range at you. Did I mention I hate the Sparrow's minimum engagement range? I wish it was shorter! All too often I'm out of AIM-9s but still have 7s left. It's like "too close for my missiles, still too far for guns...ARGH!!!" Quote
+MigBuster Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Lost count the amount of times ive died thanks to sight seeing - the F6 key can be lethal! Quote
11th_AF_Sapper Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Ouch, missle head on hurts.... but atleast you have your chaff and flair keys set XD I have no idea what they are, but I'm gonna figure that out once I get more use to the game I guess. So don't worry about one missle to the face I take em allot XD. Quote
+Syrinx Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Lost count the amount of times ive died thanks to sight seeing - the F6 key can be lethal! Too right...I'm so nosey I'll even Ctrl+F12 my way around whist supposedly still flying a mission. Quote

Somebody says 'mission success' over the radio, as in mission accomplished, and this little pink piggie departs the fight. Show them my steadily dimishing afterburning buttocks and head for the bar. Eric Hartmann only entered into a dogfight when there was absolutely no option. Get it position, hammer your target and depart the battle. Been using the formula lots and, I'll admit there is not as much swagger in my stride to the dinner table, but I do survive most of the sim fights I'm in. Consign my flight to cover my dead ass, then I go in as fast as I can, lock up and shoot as fast as I can, no such thing as level flight, one pass and haul ass as close to the dirt as I can stand it and let the aluminum bitch stretch for a low altitude speed record. Actually, I think that qualifies me as the worst fighter pilot on the planet. Yet, I still live.................... Quote

Thought that was the way it was supposed to be done! - when I hear mission accomplished I often keep attacking the ground targets in a suicidal manner - then when shot down sit there thinking "why did I keep attacking that gun when there was no reason to". In the YAP missions it even tells you not to stick around to long - but do I listen! Quote
Kobuspoes Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 You can be very worse in flying just like me :D Like this time: I was flying up in an F14 and some stupid MiG-23 was flyin' up ahead. I fire a 54 at him, miss, but thats not the worstest thing,he just fired an R24 right before him, great turn, and boom.another F14 down. Didnt mentioned he already had on radar for ages. After that i reflyd that mission and boom,a few bullets in the afterburner, still not down, tryin' to get him, boom, crashed into a Flogger. but i quess Some of us fly worser, hehe. Quote
Emp_Palpatine Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 I've been downed in a F-15 by a libyan Mirage F-1... :blush2: Quote
Kobuspoes Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Thats not that worse i get downed in an F18 by an MiG-17... Quote
