Ok, I want movies made about wars that are GOOD. Not the highest grossing, but as a man would call the film, good.

 

I'll start with the format we'll be using:

Most of the best French war movies rather target WW1:

- A very long engagement : unorthodox investigation about a past strange episode in the no man's land

- Capitaine Conan : incursion on the forgotten Balkan Front with unruly skirmishers

- Joyeux Noël : Christmas fraternization in the no man's land - to be watched in original version for the priceless international casting

One of the best war movies I've ever seen is a 2004 South korean movie based during the Korean War:

 

 

Plenty of great action scenes as well as a good storyline. I bought it on DVD from Amazon after a friend loaned me a copy.

The Odd Angry Shot is a great Vietnam movie. It's just a shame the more recent Australian war flicks like Beneath Hill 60 and (especially) Kokoda have been more stylised and melodramatic than factual. Dark Blue World is pretty good. Stalingrad and Das Boot were fantastic. As was The Blue Max (WWI).

Watched it last night and couldn't agree more. Very well done move. Ended on bit of a confusing note, but a solid film.
