When I was experimenting with trying to make a satellite target (for a ASAT missile) I did exactly what you described.
Ground objects are built with the 0,0,0 coordinate at ground level. So you could make a model that was lots of meters above that...which would make it appear to 'float' or 'fly'. Therefore, making a airborne carrier type model would be easy with the proper model and ini values. It would just only 'fly' at the same altitude.
Problems with this approach include you could only land 'on top' of the deck. Maybe rig something like a BSG setup, where you fly into a tunnel.
The other problem is that attempting to destroy such a model with weapons would only work with unguided weapons. Guided weapons will attempt to target the 'base' of such a structure....where there is no visual model. Which is why I gave up on the 'Satellite'.
Speaking of satellite targets, the ASAT is back on track with the release of WoI. New code has shown up which gives me another way of making a 'satellite'...already done tests. Just gotta figure out why the guided missile is so inaccurate...
