That is true that Lynx is used by an allied helicopter too, but so is Tiger (as in F-5E Tiger II and the Eurocopter Tiger). Both are in service in allied nations at the same time, so there is a precedent for it.

Silverbolt, What-If are even more fun it they take verisimilitude into account, otherwise they are just fantasy, so why bother to model it at all, we could just use a box and everyone would just pretend it's a high-resolution model. ^^

Since I was not under the impression the F-29 was part of a Ace Combat/Macross/Whatever Is Fashionable, I assumed it strived for verisimilitude (the quality of ressembling thruth).

Anyway, it was just a motivated and argumented opinion, whatever happens, once out, you can still rename and mod the damn thing how you please.

You could even paint it pink and have unicorns on the wings if that strikes your fancy, which, strangely, I doubt.

Talos, unfortunately, no, this is no precedent, let me explain why :

In the case of the Tiger, you have the F-5E Tiger II, named in the 70's.

Then you have the european recon/patrol/escort/attack helo, originally named Tigre/Gerfaut/whatever in France and PAH-2 (then a host of other designations as focus shifted and intended missions evolved) in Germany (I'm not aware of Tiger being an official name for the machine in German service, as it would be unusual for the Germans, the Tigre's predecessor was simply known as PAH-1).

Notice that in this case, the US designation predates the European one (europeans never gave a damn about what the rest of the world calls their hardware, our names are often purely national and in our own language, we never really made efforts to "translate" Viggen, Gripen, Rafale, Mirage... for export purposes).

Now, in the Lynx case, we have the Westland helicopter named at the beginning of the 70's, before the naming of the F-29, thus, the US, having a naming policy avoiding confusion not only nationaly but internationally, would certainly not use the name.

Different situations, different outcomes.

Hmm, good point, Gunrunner. Though I still like Lynx (and will keep using it for my F-29 profiles and designs), how about something like Ocelot?

Doubly agree with you about Razor. It doesn't fit USAF naming conventions at all and does sound pretty lame.

All youse Razor haters don't need to fly it.

Razor just fits, without all the retro homilies, and other in-depth silliness.

Razor r00lz, at least in this poll. Long live the Razor!

:yahoo:

Jaguar?

Or something like Hellcat, not bothering with any "II"'s which just sound lame anyway.

Lynx gets my vote since an agile cat and not the largest - just like the plane itself.

Agreed, it fits it perfectly..

Razor fits, that's why it would probably be an unofficial nickname, just like Warthog is better known than Thunderbolt II.

But here we are talking about official designation, most of which ARE lame.

And anyway, once it proves itself in combat, the damn thing would be known as Straight Razor...

Whatever is chosen, once out, I will fly it as Warhawk II over the Taiwan Straight. ;)

More fodder for those who think names shouldn't be applied in more than one thing at a time, but Ozelot is already the name of a tiny german AA tankette fitted with Stingers. Hence, one of these days one would read in the report: "Ozelot accidentaly shot down by Ozelot."

Better stick with Lynx IMHO

Northrop has a patent on a fighter design with forward swept wings called "switchblade" However, it is a swing wing design very similar to the F/A-37 talon from stealth.

Perhaps something like "vulture" or some bird of prey, or just plain hawk? It borrowed many parts from the F-5E tiger II and F-20 Tigershark, maybe F-29A 'supertiger' in the same vein as the superhornet, supersabre and supertomcat? Or Scorpion II after the F-89 scorpion.

I don't know. Maybe Griffen or Arc Angel or Seraphim or Pheonix (yeah, I know it's a name of a missile).

I dunno about Razor... seems kinda :ghey:  You know, like whey it was decided that the Su-37 should be renamed the Terminator and everyone in the defence industry kinda chortled

Geez, I really stirred up a sh*t storm here didn't I?

Do we need a new poll, or should I just decide on a name myself?

Razor sounds ghey.....Dels you pick one, its your bird. If someone doesn't like the name, they can change it themselves.

I agree about Razor.

If I included Hellcat II in the poll would people prefer that to Warhawk II? Or am I :deadhorse:

What about going with the razor theme, and calling it the switchblade or stiletto? Call it ghey, and it will cut you b-tch!

Northrop has a patent on switchblade, but its a swing wing design. But I like Stiletto, call it that.

A hellcat II needs to be a heavy naval fighter. The new plane should be comparable to the ancestor (A-10 Thunderbolt II , P-47 thunderbolt both ground attack excellence, F-35 lightning II, P-38 lightning - jack of all trades multirole aircraft)

Switchblade was also the unofficial nick name of the FB-111A (not to be confused with the F-111A).

Warhawk II is very fitting and keep the old P-40 linage alive.
