FastCargo 412 Posted July 14, 2010 ....here are some points to ponder: 1) If you get caught, it is 20 years prison time...just for pointing at an aircraft. If you cause a medical problem or metal to be bent, kiss the rest of your life goodbye. And yes, people do get caught pretty easily...the FBI takes a dim view of such pranks. 2) Because it's a point source, if you swing it in the sky, you now have a big arrow pointing to your location (as in, your exact street address). 3) If I can see it from my aircraft, I guarantee everyone in your neighborhood can see it too...conventional searchlights are only SLIGHTLY better at attracting attention. 4) You had better hope none of the people that know you have one is a pilot...because assuming they don't beat the crap out of you with it, they'll be happy to call someone who will. May you rot in hell with green tinting you stupid, inbred, craptastic piece of garbage...I was only too happy to give tower your exact coordinates when you illuminated my jet. Slartibartfast 153 Posted July 14, 2010 Fecking Idiots... Hope your okay FC... you dont light up an aircraft with a laser on a stupid scale of one to 10 that rates about a 100, I hope that they rot in some eternal damnation...
serverandenforcer 33 Posted July 14, 2010 Hey FC, you ok? When did this happen?

+Muesli 2,161 Posted July 14, 2010 Piss-ants here in NL more than once point them at AC, even the AH-64s....... With our lame government and legal system, punishment is restricted to 180 hours of picking up garbage in public parcs....... Boo hoo hoo... wish I'll ever meet such a wad who's bragging about it, only to find his own head buried up his arse...
B52STRATO 215 Posted July 14, 2010 Looks like this kind of assholes get more and more members... already some of them was around TNCM during touristic bound
Slartibartfast 153 Posted July 14, 2010 In the UK they are congregating around Airports... and firing them at Airliners as well... its Fecking Stupid... Should be jailed for attempted Murder in my books!!!
+Julhelm 266 Posted July 14, 2010 Does it look any different from the cockpit of a plane compared to if someone points you in the eye with the things?
Slartibartfast 153 Posted July 14, 2010 Its the same as the human eye doesnt need much laser light to blind it... okay its weakened by altitude but it doesnt matter no one should be pointing lasers at Aircraft cockpits... especially in the landing pattern as the pilots are at the busiest time of flight at that point... SayethWhaaaa 245 Posted July 14, 2010 It's because of these pricks that I can't get me one of . I don't want it for dodgy, semi-legal reasons, I want it because I like these kind of wicked techy gadgets and this thing looks wicked!. But some dickhead thought it was fun to paint an airliner, then one of his dumb buddies tried it and now it's possible for me to be fined $2000 for having one on my key chain for work. I accept that they're doing so for safety reasons and rightly so... But these idiots with lasers are spoiling it for the rest of us! I think a healthy beating is in order... +Julhelm 266 Posted July 14, 2010 That 1000mW laser needs to be regulated more than firearms IMO. Sell it unregulated and you'll end up with a bunch of dumbasses permanently blinding other innocent people 'for kicks'.
DWCAce 19 Posted July 14, 2010 FC, too bad you retired from USAF. You could of switched back to the Bone and exacted some revenge. Hope your Mk.0 Optical Sensors are OK.
FastCargo 412 Posted July 14, 2010 Yea, I'm fine...more pissed than anything. We were lit up on about 5 mile final at midnight tonite...the captain noticed it at the same time I did, even though it was about a 3 o'clock position (my side). He noticed it because it lit up the cockpit (no pen laser this). I caught it partially, but was able to turn away quick enough that it only left an afterburn streak (like a flashbulb). I got a great positional fix on it because the dumbass turned it away, so there was this great beam pointing straight at his location, and since we were relatively close to the ground, it was easy to pinpoint. SayethWhaaaa 245 Posted July 14, 2010 So what happens? Do you call in the position (or these abouts) and control calls the 5-0 in to go take a look...?
Jaman 5 Posted July 14, 2010 Whats the problem with a laser pointing to an airplane (besides the obvious hitting the pilot on the eyes)?. P.S Im not trying to be sarcastic, ironic or defending the little s**t, im honestly curious about it cos i dont know.
+GrinchWSLG 24 Posted July 14, 2010 So what happens? Do you call in the position (or these abouts) and control calls the 5-0 in to go take a look...? Pretty much. We try to get as much info as we can from the pilot, broadcast a warning every five minutes for about 30 minutes and put it on the ATIS. We contact the police and they go out and try to search the little bastard down. I've had to deal with it twice in about the past year.

P.S Im not trying to be sarcastic, ironic or defending the little s**t, im honestly curious about it cos i dont know. The problem is that the laser can easily hit the cockpit window (accidentally/intentionally... it doesn't matter), which will act like a prism for the laser, sending the beam everywhere inside the cockpit in which it lights it up brighter than the sun. MigBuster 2,884 Posted July 14, 2010 Are there any lenses that can give protection against this?
JediMaster 451 Posted July 14, 2010 Sure, they make goggles for that purpose, but they're hardly lightweight and comfortable plus I think they're pretty pricey. It's kind of like buying Kevlar vests for night watchmen at a toy factory. Sure, an armed guy MIGHT come in, but they probably won't as it's not valuable enough and the odds don't favor spending that money. If they're going to spend that money, might as well make those little hand-launched UAVs detach from the plane and hunt down the perps.
Fubar512 1,350 Posted July 14, 2010 As it was a green laser, it was purposely done to incapacitate. The human eye is most sensitive to shades of green, and makes little or no effort to block green light. All "dazing" weapons are green for that reason http://www.laserenergetics.com/dazerlaser.htm

Lexx_Luthor 57 Posted July 15, 2010 Sorry to hear that FC. Back when I was tower climbing, we heard stories of guys getting shot at way up there on towers in the waay back country. Some clowns might be out there with laser instead of rifle, or both. Sick. Jedi:: might as well make those little hand-launched UAVs detach from the plane and hunt down the perps. You know, air marshalls fly sometimes, so could an escort armed with laser homing missiles tag along sometimes, maybe orbit near the field.
+Typhoid 231 Posted July 15, 2010 these have been going on for awhile. Back when I was with NORAD, we were logging all the reports. It seems they really spike when the publicity goes out. Its weird. You put the word out about dangerous and stupid this in, and more of it happens! We need to fly CAP with laser guided Mavericks...............
