as you may have seen already i´m currently working on the F-4EJ and as usaul i got some problems regarding infos  , my best source is Sundowner and some books i have but there are still some question i have

- - - weapons - - -

based on the book i have the F-4EJ did only have AIM4-D , AIM-9?  and the 20mm gun , pictures i have show that antil 1981 no aim-9 rails where used on the EJ only from 1981 onward the aim-9rails are shown on pictures before 1981 only the aim-4 rails ( at least on all the pictures that i could find )

the AIM-7 capability as well as air to ground capability came only with the KAI upgrade based on my book , does anybody have some infos on that  ???

- - - ECM - - -

in my book is the mention of an AN/ALQ6 ecm pod that was used on the EJ but i cant find any pictures or infos on that pod , does anybody have some infos on that  ???

an other pod that was used is the ALE-41 chaff dispenser i got a drawing of it but i cant find any good pictures  , so if you have some pictures of such a pod please send them to me

any info , picture or help is welcome

Well, all I can do is to remind you that Japan can only use its armies for self defense duties, so any kind of bombs and air-to-ground rockets are off use. I´m quite sure that you already know this. :good:

The photos at this website are interesting and dated: http://nabe3saviation.web.fc2.com/aF41j.html

This one from 22May81 shows an AIM-7 Sparrow being carried:

yes , you right i missed that one , so the AIM-7 issue is solved , i will add the AIM-7 back to the data_ini and change the loadout back to the way it was before

so the only problem  to solve now is the AN/ALQ6 ecm pod ,  anybody that has some info on that ???

F-4EJ did indeed carry the Sparrow and Sidewinders prior to 1981. There's also the AAM-1, which is easily mistaken for a Sidewinder because it was developed from the AIM-9E and looks identical.

I can try and get you the service dates for specific model weapons if necessary, but the loadouts included under the optional files from the F-4EJ skin pack should be fine as long as the export years on the weapons user-side are correct.

I'll also ask Nengajyou, who is a real Phantom Phanatic, if he has pictures of the J/ALQ-6 and ALE-41 pods.

This is a common misconception. Because there's always the possibility of needing to repel a land invasion, the JASDF operates A2G ordnance from dumb bombs and rockets to guided bombs and even JDAM more recently. For whatever reason they don't have any stocks of LGBs or Mavericks, though.

The F-4EJ was technically capable of carrying iron bombs including the Mk82 and M117. However, until they got the F-15J in 1981, the F-4EJ was still the JASDF's primary air superiority aircraft, so in practice they rarely -if ever- carried bombs (as far as I'm aware).

By the way, Ravenclaw, will your new F-4EJ be compatible with the older and stock skins? The screenshots sure look wonderful in any case!

i would need the service dates of the weapons if you can get them that would be great , and if you could find out why the AIM-9 rails only appear from 1981 onward that would help me to plus what AIM-9 version was used on the EJ

as for the AAM-1 and AAM-3 they are in work and almost finish , if you can find some pictures of this missiles showing the markings and letterings that would be realy helpful , all i could find are some pictures of blue colored training rounds and from a museum in plain white

as for the older or stock skins , no they will no longer fit , but if you like to make additional skins i can send you the templates  , but as far as i know all other camos are aircraft specific in general there was only 1 camo  for the EJ

as for the AG weapons i will not add them because as you mention above the EJ was not used for AG business and the AN/AJB-7 bombing computer was removed

as for the pods yes any picture will help , i have the model of the ALE-41 finish but i´m still looking for more detail pictures to make the skin and for the AN/ALQ6 i have nothing sofar

so in short anything you can get will help and is welcome

aahhh... and if you can get by any chance some high res pictures of the KAI cockpit that would be excellent , i have the two pictures that i could find in the net but it is almost impossible to see the lettering

I never imagined it was so hard to get info on an F-4 variant. I have piles of F-4 books. Some of them have several photos of F-4EJ, but none of them have very much useful technical info on them. Finding photos of armed F-4EJs is like finding photos of armed Israeli aircraft. I don't know if Japan rarely flies armed or if they censor photos the way Israel does. While I never cared much before, the lack of information makes me want more!

I want a good book on the F-4EJ in English. Not just a paint scheme book for modeling, but an excellent technical and photo history.

This continues to be an uphill struggle I'm afraid, there used to be a great site many years ago [long gone now] that had various pictures of every aircraft, details, weapons the lot.

As for books the only one I have showing any amount of armed aircraft is this, in Japanese though......and pretty rare nowadays.

@ Streakeagle, for pictures of actual combat armed Israeli F-4's I can recommend these:

I can't even find the photos you have found... less alone new ones

The photos might not help much but I think you already have the AN/ALE-41 made... The J/ALQ-6 side view might just help a ta-bit?

i use the japanese language option in the search machine , that is the only way to find something on the EJ

i found an article where the F-4EJ with J/ALQ-6 and AN/ALE-41 are called EF-4EJ , dont know if that is an official name with the JASDF  but you can find some stuff if you search for EF-4EJ in the net

would be nice if someone could translate it  http://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/f104jmachdeuce/34146748.html

Ahhh, the mysterious EF-4EJ, I've read about this a few times, from what I remember it was an unnoficial  name given to a few aircraft [maybe less than 10] that were set up to provide specialised jamming during exercises, possibly each squadron would set up 1 or 2 for this role depending on the scale of the exercise,  the AN/ALE-41 equipped aircraft would effectively be nothing more than a good old fashioned "chaff bomber".

I have an old Japanese aviation magazine somewhere with a few pictures of these birds in action......if only I could find it.
