  2. After having won the competition for a light attack plane, FIAT had encountered problems with the structural integrity of its two-part fuselage system in the G-91. The first model, built the way it was meant to, in the wind-channel showed the possibility of unusual wear in the connection system of the two fuselage parts, which could have lead to the breaking and the loss of the plane in medium to high-g exposures. The construction team had to overthink a possibility for a workaround without making the airplane much heavier, more expensive and more difficult to maintain. Italian minister of defense, Paolo Emilio Taviani, not happy about this matter, sought an other way to reinforce the italian air force with a suitable and comparable aircraft until the problems of the G-91 would have been solved. He was then offered the A-4 Skyhawk, which was also a light and easy to maintain aircraft. Three italian pilots of the Aeronautica Militare received the possibility to test the aircraft in the US. Their reports included a satisfactory review of this nimble aircraft. It was described as nice to fly and easy to maintain. The ministry of defense, not willing to upset FIAT but showing impatience, ordered 72 A4D-2N (renamed A-4C; with an option for eventually more), which got allocated to squadrons of the 6th, 32nd and 51st Stormo in 1962. An A-4C of the 32nd Stormo, 1962 At the end of the 1960s, the A-4Cs got replaced by the more modern A-4Es, with better engine and radar and also the possibility to take more payload on board. Some of the A-4C, which some of the italian pilots called "topolino" (little mouse), got retained for training purposes while most of the fleet got back to the US or sold to other countries. A-4Es from the 51st Stormo, 1970 At the end of the 1960s, FIAT finally was able to start delivering G-91 to the air forces. Italy, though being local customer, was doubtful about replacing the Skyhawks with the Ginas, since all pilots were satisfied with the capabilities and the flight characteristics of the aircraft. Mario Tanassi, then minister of defense, declared, after having discussed this matter with the Adreotti administration, that the Skyhawks would be replaced by G-91 in a matter of two years with the exception of the 6th Stormo. The replaced Skyhawks got then sold to other countries or scrapped for spare parts. The 6th Stormo was the last wing having the Skyhawk, receiving in 1973 the last upgrade with the A-4F. A-4Fs of the 6th Stormo The wing did not have the Skyhawk for a long time. In 1978, MoD Attilio Ruffini on behalf of the italian government, got into negotiations with SecDef Harold Brown of the Carter Administration about the purchase of 24 A-6 and 4 EA-6 aircraft of Grumman for replacing the Skyhawks. In Spring 1979, the negotiations were successful and Italy was to receive the new aircraft in early 1980. The days of the Skyhawk in italian service got fewer and fewer. The last Skyhawk was taken out of commission and sold to Brazil in April 1980. A-6S' of the 6th Stormo, around Summer 1980 EA-6S', Summer 1980

  10. View File VA-34 A-4B Skyhawk Bay of Pigs During the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion VA-34 A-4B Skyhaks from the USS Essex flew a CAP/ escort mission with the intention of protecting the Rebal A-26 Invaders but due to a timing cock up were an hour late and missed engaging the Cuban T-33A fighters. They also flew multiple reconnaissance flights over the invasion beach throughout the incident. Due to President Kennedy insisting that there be no proof of US involvement the Skyhawks had their USN markings painted over. There are no photos of these aircraft and very few of VA-34 during that time period so I have based these skins off the only photo I can find specifically of VA-34 during the Bay of Pigs Invasion as well as one from later that year. These photos are of aircraft that did not have their markings painted over however. There is an alternative skin based on a drawing Statos posted which I think makes a way cooler looking Aircraft but is unlikely to be historically accurate. Credit goes to TW, Stratos and Nyghtfall. If you do create a Bay of Pigs USN A-4B v FAR T-33A remember the A-4B could not carry the AIM-9 at this point and Skyhawks operating over Cuba just had two wing drop tanks plus thier 20mm cannons. Change the Aircraft role from 'attack' to 'fighter' in the A-4B_data.ini file if you want better AI performance from your wingmen. Submitter dtmdragon Submitted 01/12/2019 Category A-4

McDonnell Douglas A-4E Skyhawk, Hellenic Air Force for STRIKE FIGHTERS 1 This is a simple mod of the Third Wire A-4E Skyhawk to create a fictional A-4E in service with the Hellenic Air Force during the 1967 to 1991 timeline. It should work with any Series One game with the A-4E LOD's and 'What If' markings are included for 330 Mira in an 'as delivered' USN scheme and also 339 Mira and 340 Mira in wrap-around camo schemes made by me using the template uploaded by BUFF. INSTRUCTIONS 1. From the AIRCRAFT folder drag and drop the A-4E_HAF folder into your Aircraft folder. That's it! CREDITS Thanks to TK for a great little game/sim. Thanks to BUFF for uploading the A-4E template from which I've used the lines and rivets layer. And thanks to everyone in the wider Third Wire community. Regards Spinners Version 1 - 10/06/18

  15. Here is how close New Zealand came to deploying a Squadron of its A-4K Skyhaws to the Gulf War in the 90's, remember they had just been through an upgrade program equipping them with the APG-66 radar, glass cockpit with HUD, MIL-STD 1553B databus, laser INS and ALR-66 RWR. They were cleared to use the AIM-9L, AGM-65B/G, GBU-16C/B, Mk-81/82/83/84 low and high drag bombs. The following is a post by an A-4K avionics tech in the RNZAF 1984-2001 and author of the book SKYHAWKS: The History of the RNZAF Skyhawk. https://books.google.co.nz/books/about/Skyhawks.html?id=N7NCngEACAAJ&redir_esc=y "It was also an interesting time at Ohakea. 75 Sqn was in training to go to war, 2 Sqn were about to be deployed to Nowra and there was talk that the Nowra deployment would go on hold as all our A-4s and personnel would be needed to support 75 Sqn. The paint shop were all geared up to repaint the aircraft in desert camo, the deployment route to the Gulf had been worked out and everyone was being lined up at Medical for their jabs. The 75 Squadron Gulf War happy hour was very memorable - Sadam Husain even put in an appearance! Sadly nothing happened and 75 Sqn went to Williamtown as planned for a WILLOH Exercise at the end of January and 2 Sqn deployed to Nowra as planned at the beginning of February. Oh what might have been eh, had our politicians had some balls! Had we deployed the A-4s they would have been one of the most sophisticated ground attack aircraft in theatre with their then brand new Kahu avionics. We would most likey have been based alongside the Kuwaiti A-4s as they had had to leave all of their ground equipment, ground crew and spares in Kuwait when they evacuated to Saudi. A great opportunity was lost to demonstrate the value in having an Air Combat Force, something we would pay dearly for 10 years later under HC and Co." and: Question: "Was that a genuine plan to operate with the Kuwaiti Air Force? Would the A-K's not have come under RAF command as part of Operation Granby, and operated alongside the Tornadoes and Buccaneers?" Answer: "The US were looking for a fast and easy way to get the Kuwaiti A-4s back in the fight. All they had were their 20 odd aircraft, the pilots who flew them and the clothes they were wearing! They had to leave everything else behind when they left Kuwait. Deploying us along side of them would have solved their logistics and ground crew problem (and the Saudi's/Kuwaiti's would have paid NZ handsomely!). But instead they employed civilian contractors (mercenaries), all former USN/USMC guys. The USMC were still actively flying A-4Ms at that time and had just started disbanding squadrons, so sending over all of the weapons, spares and support equipment they needed wasn't really a problem (they just raided the boneyard). We probably would have come under the RAF command Dave but would have been used in a close air support role (what the A-4 was best at) rather than the longer range tactical strike the Tornados were doing. If we had gone I'm picking we would have fired a LOT of Mavericks... All pie in the sky stuff now but at the time these were the things various people in the RNZAF were seriously thinking about. Had we deployed the A-4s there were a few "fast track" mods we would have had to do to the aircraft (the first four we subsequently did to the aircraft anyway): 1. Fit and test the KY-58 secure radio kit to all aircraft - Kahu had installed the wiring etc. but it was not yet tested in 1991 (secret squirrel stuff). 2. Fit and test the Mode 4 IFF kit (same deal as above). 3. Programme the radar warning system with the threat and friendly radars 4. Update the weapon inventory software for any additional weapons were would be carrying 5. Uprate the engines (basically run the engine hotter to produce more thrust at full power - can be done but reduces engine life) 6. Repaint the aircraft " And so I give you No.75 Squadron, Royal New Zealand Airforce, A-4K Skyhawk, Joint New Zealand/ Kuwait Skyhawk Wing, Operation Desert Storm 1992, King Abdul Aziz Air Base, Dhahran. Expanding on the "fast track' mods Dom mentions above the CBU-87/B has been added to the Kiwi Skyhawk's inventory to enable medium altitude area attacks (as done for the RAF Jaguar's). ALQ-119(V)17 ECM pods are borrowed from the USAF and always carried operationally like most allied aircraft. Finally a handful of AN/ASQ-153 Pave Spike pods are also borrowed from the USAF enabling precision daylight strikes to be carried out without a 'buddy' aircraft to designate the target. The MIL-STD 1553B databus intalled during the project 'Kahu' upgrade is key to enabling the quick addition of additional ordnance and EW pods. Once the air threat had subsided the Kiwi Skyhaws stopped carrying a single AIM-9L and replaced it on most missions with an AGM-65B that the pilots used more as a substitute targeting pod to enable magnified target identification before attacking with bombs etc

This is an upgrade and major enhancement for the stock Third Wire A-4E, H, & F Ahits (Skyhawks). The standard TW Ahits have a few issues with their historical accuracy. This mod corrects those issues and even adds a few more aircraft to the Ahit family. Instillation: As usual simply drop into your mods folder and allow it to override when prompted. (This is important as there are changes to some of the aircraft.ini files etc) Strike Fighters 2 Israel plus either Strike Fighters 2 or Strike Fighters 2 Vietnam are required. Changes include: - The A-4H Ahit was not delivered with a downgraded engine. It had the same J52-P8A engine as the F model Skyhawk. Israel latter upgraded the engines of the H and F Ahits to the P-408A as used in the A-4M and N Skyhawks. - The 30mm cannons fitted to the A-4H Ahit were fitted at a 2.5 degree downward angle due to the emphasis the IAF placed on strafing after the Six Day war. However in reality it was less than ideal as there was no change to the A-4 gun sight so aiming proved quite difficult until the introduction of the HUD in the Crystal upgrade. - A-4E Ahit was delivered with the avionics hump of the F model Skyhawk. The hump was installed in US Navy service in anticipation of receiving ECM equipment but these aircraft were delivered to Israel instead. Because it was empty the hump was initially removed in Israeli service. - The A-4E Ahit was also refitted with 30mm cannons. However due to the problems encountered with the angle of instillation in the H model Ahit they were installed at a 1.5 degree downward angle in the E models. - US Emergency Aid Skyhawks: During the Yom Kippur war A-4E as well as A-4F Skyhawks were sent to Israel as replacements for IAF A-4 losses during the war. These A-4E Skyhawks had the same standard of avionics as the F models. - Additional early textures added to the A-4H Ahits with the Star Of David on the rear fuselage and two digit aircraft numbers. - Additional texture added with the US 'Stars and Bars' and US Navy numbers which the A-4H wore during test flights in the USA. - Textures modified so there are no squadron colors on the rudder before 1976. - Textures modified so aircraft numbers are not on both the nose and vertical stabilizer at the same time before 1976. Before then the aircraft number was on either the nose or the vertical stabilizer- not both. Where it was largely depended on which squadron operated the aircraft. - The hump and corresponding avionics upgrade that appear on the A-4H Ahit (73) and A-4E Ahit (73) were known as the Crystal upgrade. This upgrade was designed to bring the Ahit fleet up to the standard of the A-4N Skyhawk/Ahit so this upgrade also included a basic heads up display with computerized weapons aiming. This upgrade would also be applied to the US Emergency Aid A-4E and F Ahits after end of the Yom Kippur war. - The triangular antenna behind the normal UHF/VHF antenna on the hump of the A-4H/E Ahits (73) as well as one of the nose antennas did not appear on the aircraft till the mid 80's - Loadouts: the stock Ahit loadouts are not unrealistic but they certainly aren't the most realistic. As such they have all been redone to include things such as the use of the Walleye in the anti-amour role by particular aircraft etc. - Opening canopy. - Landing light. - Cockpit armor changed to the same as the A-4F which the A-4H is meant to based on. - Yom Kippur and Lebanon War campaigns edited to include additional aircraft and weapons where appropriate. The Ahits will now appear in the game as follows: A-4E Ahit - Delivery of ex US Navy Skyhawks in 1971 fitted with an empty hump, no ECM and no chaff dispenser. A-4E Ahit (72) - The empty hump is removed in Israeli service, the aircraft are also re-fitted with 30mm cannons at a 1.5 degree downward angle. A-4E Ahit (73) US Emergency Aid - US Navy A-4E Skyhawks with avionics hump and standard USN avionics rushed to Israel during the Yom Kippur War to replace Ahit losses. A-4E Ahit (73) Crystal Upgrade - A-4E Ahits upgraded under project Crystal with ECM, RHAW, countermeasure dispensers, updated weapons delivery system, updated navigation system and a HUD. An extended tailpipe is also fitted. A-4F Ahit US Emergency Aid - US Navy A-4F Skyhawks with standard USN avionics rushed to Israel during the Yom Kippur War to replace Ahit losses. A-4F Ahit (74) Crystal Upgrade - US Emergency Aid A-4F Ahits are upgraded to the same standard as the project Crystal A-4H Ahits with a HUD, updated weapons delivery system, updated navigation system, 30mm cannons, extended tailpipe and P-408A engine. A-4H Ahit - Specific model Skyhawk for Israel based on the A-4F with deliveries starting in 1968. The A-4H had a downgraded weapons and avionics capability. A-4H Ahit (70) - Aircraft are re-fitted with 30mm cannons at a 2.5 degree downward angle. A-4H Ahit (72) - Israel begins replacing the J52-P8A engine with the more powerful J52-P-408A and restoring/ expanding the aircrafts weapon capabilities. A-4H Ahit (73) Crystal Upgrade - A-4H Ahits are upgrade under project Crystal with ECM, RHAW, countermeasure dispensers, updated weapons delivery system, updated navigation system and a HUD. An extended tailpipe is also fitted. A-4H Ahit (84) Crystal Upgrade - Additional external antenna on the avionics hump and nose of the aircraft are installed. File Name: SF2 A-4F VA-164 'Ghost Riders' 1973 File Submitter: Nyghtfall File Submitted: 02 January 2015 File Category: A-4 A-4F Skyhawk, VA-164 'Ghost Riders' Vietnam 1973 Skinpack *** SF2V required for A-4F-model, tested in full 5-merged installation *** The skin represents A-4Fs from VA-164 'Ghost Riders' in 1973 aboard the carrier USS Hancock in Vietnam. All BuNo are correct for this squadron, but unfortunately I couldn't find the correct assignment for all modex to BuNo. This pack contains another version of "Lady Jessie", this time the wellknown version with big letters on the fuselage. In 1973 VA-164 was on another combat-cruise in Vietnam. Carrier Air Wing CVW-21, which VA-164 was part of, was tasked with the responsibility, to develop expertise in unique mission types. For example VA-55 was tasked with Iron Hand missions, while VA-164 was to develop tactics to use Laser Guided Weapons at its best. Some A-4F were equipped with Laser Spot Trackers instead of the ususal Radar in the nose, so that LGBs could be used on designated targets. As these were only trackers, a special Designator was needed. For that case, 2 TA-4F were borrowed from USMC squadrons. A 2nd crewmember with a handheld-device to designate the targets was placed on the 2nd seat. Those people were volunteers from other squadrons, that usually flew E-1B or RF-8/F-8. As the handheld-device had to be held steady for a proper designation while the plane was flying, it was a not well-like job to do. But in the end, it proved successful and led to the development of build-in laserdesignators. The pack consists of 2 parts: - a skin for the stock A-4F, which cannot use laser-guided bombs (LGB). So this is only for the looks. Select the skin in the loadout-screen of the stock A-4F. - a modification of the stock A-4F to use LGB. Ingame you will find a new plane - "A-4F (Laser Spot Tracker)" to choose. It also has a different gunsight and shows laser designated targets. For the laser-designator you have 2 options. First is to use the plane as is, meaning, you only can use LGBs on primary targets as they're always designated. The radarscreen is just black in that case, because the planes didnt have a radar anymore. Second, you use the Laser designator from the loadout screen and can use LGBs on every target. I included a modified AVQ-23 (modded from the stock one) for that purpose. It is not shown externally and is a compromise for playability-reasons. The radar-screen shows the target if you have selected one. Planes marked with * are the LST-equipped ones (401, 407, 411, 413, 414), which have the different nosecone. 401 and 407 are confirmed by pictures, the other 3 are in for a good mix. There were more than 2 of them, but I couldn't find more numbers or other pictures. Installation ============ 1. unzip to a temporary folder 2. open "Put_In_Your_Mod folder" and do as you were told, if asked to overwrite, say 'yes' :P 3. enjoy! A-4E (65) Skyhawk, VA-164 'Ghost Riders' Vietnam 1967-1968 Skinpack by Nyghtfall v1.1 ====================================================================================== *** SF2V required for A-4E_65-model, tested in full 5-merged installation *** The skin represents A-4Es from VA-164 'Ghost Riders' between June 1967 and January 1968 aboard the carrier USS Oriskany in Vietnam. All BuNo are correct for this squadron, but unfortunately I couldn't find the correct assignment for all modex to BuNo. The plane number 406 (152048) is an early version of the well-known "Lady Jessie", named after Jessie Beck, an owner of a casino in Reno, Nevada by Richard Perry. As a young man, he worked in the casino, they befrieded and he later became her pseudo-adopted son, until he was commissioned in 1957. Part of the training took place at Fallon near Reno and she always took good care of him and his comrades with baskets of goodies. Even after R. Perry was assigned to VA-164, she took care of him and the entire squadron by sending care packages. At some point R. Perry painted "Lady Jessie" on one of the squadrons birds as hommage to Jessie Beck. In October 1967 R. Perry was shot down while on a raid over Haiphong, but Lady Jessie continued her care for the squadron and after that date it was common use to apply "Lady Jessie" on the 401 plane until the decommisioning of VA-164. The interesting story well-written: http://jeanettevaughan.wordpress.com/2014/10/12/lady-jessie-bell-and-the-navy-ghostriders-belle-of-steel-12/ Some highlights on this skinpack are: - new Baseskin with highter resolution (2048x2048) - a lot new maintenance markings (a big thank to Soulfreak for the pattern!) - new Decals for nearly everything :) - gray rudder - corrected Nosecone - updated data.ini is included, which contains the working canopy (SHIFT+0) and landing light (thanks to Wrench). A-4E (65) Skyhawk, VA-93 'Blue Blazers' Vietnam 1967 Skinpack by Nyghtfall v1.1 =============================================================================== *** SF2V required for A-4E_65-model, tested in full 5-merged installation *** The skin represents A-4Es from VA-93 'Blue Blazers' in the first half of 1967 aboard the carrier USS Hancock in Vietnam. BuNo are correct for this squadron, but unfortunately I couldn't find the correct assignment for all modex to BuNo. The following ones are correct and confirmed by pictures or shotdownlists: 300 (152022), 301 (151049), 302 (151106), 303 (151070), 306 (151038), 310 (151082), 311 (151076), 313 (151105) All others are filled with BuNo that are correct for the timeframe and squadron, but miss an assignment to a specific modex. If someone has more information, please contact me for an update. One rare fact is, that some planes of VA-93 still wore the A-4C marking pattern (Insignia on front, 4-digit BuNo on tail, Navy on airbrakes) which was changed with the transition from A-4C to A-4E. According to my sources 301, 303 and 313 are confirmed for the old scheme. I added 308 and 312 for a good mix. Some highlights on this skinpack are: - new Baseskin with highter resolution (2048x2048) - new Decals for nearly everything :) - 2 Marking styles (Markings like A-4E for 300-315 except for 301,303,308,312 and 313, which wear the A-4C-scheme) - special Decals for the CAG bird (Number x00) - updated data.ini is included, which contains the working canopy (SHIFT+0) and landing light (thanks to Wrench).
