What's in a name? Need your input ...

Hi all,

Our forum assigns roles and perks based on each member's group name. Those group names are things like New Member, Gold Member, Senior Member, Modder Member, and so on. I'd like to come up with a set of names for our primary users and need six of them. I tried something aviation squadron related, it's what we're using now, and I'm not in love with it at all. So I'm going to reach out to all of you for your input and ideas. For the trouble and in the sense of fun I'd be willing to throw in a gift card or membership for the winning set. Let's see if we can generate some involvement and some ideas at the same time. Let me know your ideas.

Erik

I mean I agree with Meusli on that, as some forums have a rank system based on real ranks and so on. That would kinda fit this, since it is mainly focused on military games and such.

I thought of some ways, let's see if you like them. They go in order from the lowest level onwards.

1 - Flight Journey
1    Hangar - Getting ready for takeoff. Learning, testing, getting familiar.
2    Takeoff - First flights completed. Finding your balance in the skies.
3    Cruise - Steady, reliable, and confident. Sharing experience with others.
4    Navigator - Guiding routes, solving problems, helping fellow pilots.
5    Commander - Leading discussions and missions. Trusted voice in the cockpit.
6    Flight Architect - Designing experiences and shaping the future of flight.

2 - Evolution
1    Penguin - He doesn't fly, but he dreams of the sky.
2    Glider - Finding lift, learning finesse, feeling the air.
3    Prop - Solid pilot with growing skill and control.
4    Jet - Fast, confident, sharp. Master of systems and flight.
5    Mach - Pushing realism, limits, and innovation in simulation.
6    Voyager - Beyond flight. Exploring new frontiers of virtual skies.

3 - Aviators’ Hall of Fame
1    Wright bros. - First in flight. Learning the basics, taking your first lift.
2    Lindbergh - Courageous solo flights, exploring new horizons with determination.
3    Earhart - Bold and innovative, pushing boundaries and inspiring fellow pilots.
4    Yeager - Breaking sound barriers; mastering speed, precision, and skill.
5    Armstrong - Explorer of new frontiers; from supersonic flight to the Moon.
6    Kelly Johnson - Legendary aircraft designer; shaping the future of flight and innovation.

Thinking of the CombatAce portal as an aircraft carrier, I think these "Aviation ratings" ranks would be quite suitable for the members here.
The best part is that you'll already have the badges ready for each member. You won't need to create them.

Or you can use the well-known naval ranks.

"we are an air community"

Now tell me with a straight face you didn't see this coming?????

However, if we're looking at military rank structures, I'm partial to the RAF system.

Yeah but the owner isn't British, so the bias towards some kind of nation is a thing, but I'm more in favor for US even though it's a multinational community though.

Well if the truth be known my ancestry is British. 3x or 4x great grandad made the journey by ship in 1757. The years after that the ancestors were hitting everything that's not nailed down and probably that too.

My favorite response so far. 3 is GOATed, 1 & 2 most practical and easier to badge but I could see 3, it's unique and I like that. Need someone to graphic some ideas. I think it was @Geezer that made our last badges and they served us well, miss that guy.

Opinions on my thoughts welcome.

Use Air Force ranks...

i was thinking that at first.

but officer ranks or enlisted?

but for citizen67s suggestions, i suggest using Kelly Johnson for the modders. especially apt for cats like ravenclaw007 and simonmiller416 who are always finding new stuff in SF2, over a dozen years after the last official TW release

We used to use AF ranks, they seem ordinary at this point. Plus those who have earned those ranks in real life, feels a little bit of a disservice to toss them around like they mean nothing. That's kind of why we changed to the old groups / badges.

well not too much a disservice from my point of view, but i would feel weird with an officer rank as a retired mess sergeant, weirder still with AF rank as retired Army

plus AF dont have Warrant Officers, which would also fit modders well imho

Perhaps also worth taking inspiration from is mother nature itself - I recommend thinking of insects and birds. For example (from lowest to highest rank, in terms of overall flight stability):

1) mosquito

2) grasshopper

3) bumble bee

4) dragonfly

5) flying squirrel

6) flying fox

7) robin*

8 ) hawk*

* Note: begin counting from "bumble bee" if you'd like to include robin and hawk in the hierarchy.

Cheers all & good taxonomizing to you,

🙂

I suggest, using Aircraft names for ranks, that way you can be international, and not just US biased.

So for example the lowest rank could be Curtis Boxkite for instance, then rank up by improved aircraft, So something like Spad, or Pfalz......and so on....You get the idea i'm sure.

I could make some graphic proposals once you've decided, if you agree.

I suggest the names to be the roles of the people in a hangar. Modders could be mechanics and other users could have usernames taken from the nicknames that are given to a pilot in every step of his career. starting from nugget.
