Friendly fire incident 5 us troops killed.
ianh755 replied to MAKO69's topic in Military and General Aviation
I was supporting the air Ops from October 2001 and remember when an ODA team also took friendly fire. That was traced back to a simple mistake using the handheld Laser Designator which, when the batteries were replaced, gave your current GPS co-ordinates until you acknowledged that your GPS location was correct. Only then would it show the targets co-ordinates and in the heat of battle the FAC missed the acknowledgement and thought the GPS co-ordinates the LD was giving him were the targets and called the strike in. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Sayyd_Alma_Kalay_airstrike http://time.com/2854306/the-curse-of-friendly-fire/ -
Its coming over this year.......
ianh755 replied to MigBuster's topic in Military and General Aviation
617 disbanded about a month ago. I had a great time on 617 so it's a shame to see them go and I'm gutted I missed the disbandment party, I heard it was epic! -
Strike Fighters 2 Screenshots
ianh755 replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Screen Shots
On a Beer & Aircraft related theme - Our very own Dave helped me out in 2012 -
The Su-22, it looks like the angry love child of a pissed off MIG-21 and a bad tempered bear thats been kept in a cage and beaten with sticks daily just to make it more angry! However the Su-30 is possibly the most beautiful aircraft I've ever seen apart from the MKI versions I saw up close which looked a bit uncared for sadly (even though they were well maintained).

The 1st trailer left me thinking "I wouldn't mind seeing this". That second one changed that to an "Oh Hell Yeah I'm definitely watching that"

Seconding the thoughts already on here, well done folks.

Good reads about Gulf War air campaign?
ianh755 replied to Stratos's topic in Military and General Aviation
I bought both the Strike Eagle - The F-15E at War and the Warthog - the A-10 at War books from Amazon - Great reads, especially the A-10 one which ended up doing so many different mission types as their Desk at the main Ops HQ kept saying - "We can do that if you want" -
BULLETOBJECT.INI?
ianh755 replied to lleviatan's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
As your mods are done to the StrikeFighters2 NorthAtlantic folder then place the BulletObject.ini file into your StrikeFighters2 NorthAtlantic/Objects folder. -
Bigger smoke?
ianh755 replied to Rends's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
Could you not just alter the ParticleLifeTime= figure (so the smoke lasts longer) and the ParticleSize= figures to match (so the smoke gets bigger over the new longer time)? -
If, and it's a big "IF", this film hadn't used the line "Based on a True Story" then I'd have rated it much higher because the action is very well done, the stunts are genuinely bone breaking (1 stuntman bust 3 ribs and a lung) and the "made-up" story would have been more credible. However, because they did say "based on a true story" then my problem with the film is the fake "Hollywood" ending they gave it with the Taliban and villagers fighting and Marky Mark knife fighting someone with a broken back because neither of these things actually happened and, if they decided to fake these bits for a better story, then what other bits they fake. If the original "true" story isn't good enough for Hollywood and they decide to change it to make it exciting then they should also remove "Based on a true Story" from it, as it no longer is one, and change the characters names from the real life people involved as a mark of respect because you are no longer telling the truth about them, just some made up "but it looks better on screen" story which is a lie. I'd be surprised if Luttrell, who was there during filming, didn't say anything about the ending as people who don't know the real story will actually think that he did all those things when he knows himself that it's a lie, and that he'll have to explain to these people that none of it was real, which has got to be extremely embarrassing for him.

Jedi - I don't know, it arrived already gutted which is a shame. Jan '14 Update - It's just back from an extremely in-depth servicing (nearly $3600!) which came back with a few very minor issues but happily no big problems. Yet, as I'm a modder at heart, I couldn't resist giving the Audi a little tweak 505hp and 605ft/lbs of torque The dyno graph is all in crazy Metric (513ps and 821nm for you metric folk) but all I know is that when I 1st pulled away from some lights *properly* I was still getting adrenaline shakes 5 minutes later, it's that fast!

The Dakota's my daily drive It's the new 47 Air Dispatch Sqn (Army Unit) Memorial Dakota and being new it's very well looked after on the outside, the inside is a bit of a mess though as most of it has been ripped out which is a shame. One more pic for you - crappy phone pic sadly -

On the 20th December I bought myself a lovely low mileage (72,000) 03 plate C5 RS6 Avant in Daytona Grey. It's engine is a monstrous 4.2L Twin-Turbo V8 with 450hp & 428ft/lbs ***There's some more pics at the bottom*** It was completely standard (except for being de-badged of the RS6 on the rear) and I'm the third owner, with the 1st one taking obvious care of it with a service book full of Audi stamps and receipts for nearly 9 years while the 2nd owner appeared "more relaxed" about the maintenance side of ownership for the year he owned it before part-exchanging. For a ten year old car it's in extremely good condition. The paint work only has 2 very minor scratches, the engine bay is spotless, the interior looks brand new and it's had the brakes & timing belt replaced 10K miles ago (see Bottom for more Timing Belt info). I've had a few performance and V8 RWD cars previously (450hp Nissan R34 - BMW 740i etc) and I'd originally test drove a C6 S6, E60 M5 and a Merc S65, all of which were "OK" but seemed to be missing something for my tastes, before finding an RS6 with a History I was happy with. Even after all the other test drives I knew within seconds of that 1st "booting it" moment that the RS6 was the one for me as I grinned like a loon almost none stop during the test and actually giggled after one particular overtake Current Issues - No 2nd hand car is perfect and this hold true here although the problems are minor. The Left Rear mid-bass speaker is blown (works but sound crackly/farty), the paint had bubbled on one of the rear parking sensors intermittently sending the system haywire (see's a object when there not) and the Carbon Fibre ash-tray trim piece is loose. Not bad really! So, my plans for the RS6 then - Performance - Due to the previous owners apparent lack of quality maintenance I've got a visit to MRC Tuning (Audi Specialists) booked for Friday for the RS to get a thorough going over - Gearbox service, 20K service inc MAF/DV/N75 replacement and Health check - and if everything gets the all clear a Stage 1 remap (500hp and 510ft/lbs). However if anything big needs replacing during the health check (leaking intercoolerss, exhaust, failing DRC suspension etc) then I'll hold off the remap, replace any parts with performance versions and go for a Stage 2 remap instead (530hp and 580ft/lbs). Audio - Removing the old Sat Nav stereo (Navi-Plus RNS-D) was my 1st mod while I waited for MRC to re-open after Xmas. In it's place is an Alpine INE-W925R head unit with more connectivity than you could shake a stick at and including DAB & Sat Nav, meaning the standard aerial has been replaced with a "sharks-fin" style one due to the different DAB/GPS aerials. Other - I'm an engineer by trade and think that more is better than less regarding maintenance so the Timing belt will need doing this year. While it was done earlier than it should have been at 65K miles, there's no receipt for the work (only the parts) and only a few other bits were replaced, not the water pump etc so as it hits the 80K mile mark I'll get it done again. After that it'll just be keeping it ticking over waiting for the inevitable DRC and Gearbox failures to raise their head! Cheers for reading.......................................Ian

Some gameplay Questions

Red subtitles mean they're shooting at You and Yellow subtitles mean they're shooting at your Wingmen. -
Hud Color
ianh755 replied to artiste's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Wrench - It changes the colour of the text and any stock TW bits used in the HUD. In the F-118 pack we used Ravenclaws F-16 cockpit which calls for the stock F-16A attitude bars (as well as including a separate green set of TGA's which aren't used) and by changing the HUDColor= I made those attitude bars white. -
AH-1F Cobra Weapons Challenge
ianh755 replied to Geary's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Create a copy of the M65 TOW Rack folder but don't include the LOD file. The ini will tell the missiles where to fit but the rack itself will be invisible due to the LOD being missing. Then its just adjusting the 4 missile positions so that they fit the Visable A/C Rack. I've given it a quick test an that works for me (on an AH-64 test-bed). -
HUD info transfer
ianh755 replied to ultramig688's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
The Avionics.ini file contains all the info thats displayed on the HUD and has links to the graphics files in the Cockpit folder (attitude bars/sights etc). Because of the amount of changable info there's not a How-To however if you want to post what bits you want to move and the two aircraft involved we maybe able to help. -
Tornado GR1/GR4 for SF2 V4.0
ianh755 replied to ianh755's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
There's German pack based on the 3D model from this pack (with some minor mods) in the downloads section if you're after one now. However there is also a pack currently being made by SoulFreak with an improved 3D model (better nose, working A-A refueling probe and lots of other bits) if you'd like to wait for that instead.
