Whats Your Favorite Airplane Movie

Recommended Posts

I see nobody mentioned Jet pilot!!!!

I mean, it is not the most effective airplane movie aroud (being a John Wayne love story in disguise)

but it is certainly a classic!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050562/

I mean, the story is a bit cheesy, but you get to see all kinds of 1950 birds flying around

nicely! And that in a time most cineasts only dreamed of using derelict WW2 planes!

Thank you Howard Hughes!!!

Final Countdown is probably number one.

The DVD version is great - special features include several pilots of VF-84 talking about making the movie is one not to miss - the story of how Kathryn Ross refused to have a drink with the pilots in a local bar during the filming at Key West, then they went out the next day during filming and the Tomcat front seater held up a sign in flight to the camera plane saying "F..You Kathryn" for her viewing pleasure the next morning when they all viewed footage shot the previous day! Not to be missed!!

I will have to go part 2 of the list....

SAC (Strategic Air Command) was also very well done. A lot of the Actors in the movie were actual vets or servicemen "Well gee there...orr errr...gosh...I want to live Clarence....orr err...and uh..."

Blue Thunder did rock, very well made, just sadistic.

Bridges of Tok-ri, that we little Irish lad was full of piss and vinegar...oh toy toy toy..

Air America was pretty well made and had a good story line, I just wonder, did the plane actually need fuel or did Richard Downy Jr. get high enough for him and the entire crew.

*The Worse Airplane movies ever

I can't remember the name of it (it came out a year after Iron Eagle and used the same footage, but this time the CIA sponsored the mission.) it was like watching low budget porn.

Fire Birds

The Iron Eagle series is just cheesy.

Stealth

Pearl.. (I won't even mention the rest)

You guys REALLLY are behind the curve here...so far, of the classic Aviation War films, the only ones mentioned are

12 o'Clock High

30 Seconds Over Tokyo

Dambusters

Bridges of Toko-Ri

You've totally forgotten...

Air Force (1944)

Wing and a Prayer (1943?)

One of Our Aircraft is Missing

Yank in the RAF

Hells Angels

Dawn Patrol (both versions)

Wings

Come on people...get with the program. You're stuck with the 'modern' stuff...look further back for the real classics

For a partial listing (not updated for a while) go here -->Wrench's Genre Movie Page <--

I know that Dambusters is available in PAL format across the Pond, anyone know if it's out here in NTSC?? Supposedly there's a better version of BoB, with the movie released soundtrak (not the unused original closing theme that's on the US edition, plus it's supposed to be a 2-disc)

Stealth had some redeeming features--an Su-35 in flight was one, Jessica Biel in a bathing suit was the other!

Well I will add to the list the following golden oldies:

A Gathering of Eagles - Rock Hudson

B-52 - Karl Malden

Bat-21 Gene Hackman

The Hunters - Robert Mitchum

and Ice Station Zebra the first time ever that as a kid I saw Migs in a film and probably the film that started my interest in aircraft.

In the UK there is a a 2 disc boxset of BOB available with the secound disc crambed full of extras and which is readily available for less than a Tenner.
