Your Most Successful Aircraft...

Recommended Posts

We all have our favorite planes.

But are they the best for you?

When i first got WOV it was pretty much for being able to fly the Thud. In it i flew endless missions up north, going after the same targets time and again. It was time for a change and so i did a few other campaigns in other aircraft. I had a nice time flying F-100s out of Da Nang. Even if they were sometimes mind numbingly dull escorts in which i engaged Migs on s single occasions (no kill) So what i did was to carry a CBU or two whenever i did escort or even if i was tasked with a relativly nearby strike. After the primary mission we would go looking for something worthwhile to drop the clusters on. Managed to rack up a damn nice A2G score on the side. Not only that, my unit suffered no losses through 53 missions until i accidently deleted the campaign.

So after a long time without comp access i got back into battle, this time in WOE.

At first i started in an F-105 again just to get the feeling back, then i switched to a Hunter. Man was that Hunter a stinky plane! So i figured i'd give a Hun a shot again.

Three Mig 17s downed on the first sortie and it was love at first flight! Never before or since have i went on a run like the one on the HUN. Virtually every single sortie was leading to kills, with lots of multiple occasions. On ground support misssions it didn't let me down either. It was just...RIGHT! When all was said and done i racked up 57 aerial victories and 10 on the ground--24 MIG-17s,5 MIG-19s, 22 Mig-21s and 6 IL-28s (damn iron Beagles) 9 tanks and a mobile 57mm AAA vehicle.

The rest of the squadron scored well also, even if attrition wore us down. I went through three F-100s. Lost the first to an IL-28 gunner, the other two due collisions with my targets! The last put me in a POW camp and so my war was over. In another week or so i'm going to try again.

Having flown so much with a number of different aircraft, i just can't imagine doing anything similar in anything other than a HUN.

For me, it's always been the F8. I started off with the stock WoV version ( I was backwards - only got SFP1 after WoV). When my SFP1 copy arrived I ported the F8 over, and the same with WoE. The stock version was replaced by the original Gunfighters version, which recently gave way to the truly beautiful MF model. Sure, the Turkey has been a favourite, but I always, always end up blasting around in the "Last of the Gunfighters"...

Almost certainly the F-4 Phantom II. I prefer the era and it just carries so much! You can clobber your target, take out a runway, drill holes in the fuel tanks and then go after the MiGs!

Mind you, I revisited the F-111 recently and with 24 Snakeyes plus a couple on board you can rack up a good score and are just about untouchable at low-level.

Well, since I've really only dabbled in campaign mode in WOI, I'd have to say the F-4E. Flown several A-A missions always coming away with at least one kill. Flown a few A-G sorties, but I'm not a huge fan of the Rhino for moving mud. However, I was able to dead stick an F-4 into a nice landing after running her out of gas dogfighting a Hunter.

Although, in single missions, I've been having a blast lately with the mighty Intruder. I took my A-6E over Egypt just yesterday and completely pasted this runway w/ my Mk 82s. Then, since I still had 6 left, I dropped them all in a cluster of parked MiG-21s. I think 1 MiG was left out of about a dozen. Got a Navy Cross for the effort.

Though the Thud was my favorite, I'd have to say I've had more success (both A2G and A2A) with the F-4.

Hands down it is the Rhino! She can carry all the toys you need and want and if you drive her right she can hold her own in a dogfight. Being a mud movin fool, I also enjoy Her Highness the Tornado and the SLUF(A-7F)

Well it depends on what you mean by success. Guess it also depends on what my flying mood is that day.

BAMF: F-105D-31 Thunderchief

Raising hell or listening to music (ie. Thunderstruck): F-111D Aardvark or Tornado GR.1

Modern: F-16D Block 40

After a long thought it must be the F-15!!!

Never in the history of modern air wars did a fighter gain a record of 80 to 0 in dogfights.

It did with the Israeli air force. (including two Mig 25)

Never in the history of aviation had an A/C return home with only one wing to keep it airborn.

Yes, you have guessed it again. it happened in Israel. :good:

Well ive yet to make it through a campaign in WoE/WoI,but so far the longest survival time by far has been with the Jaguar.

Although im back with the Tornado GR1(with sidewinder rails),when you gotta run at tree-top height there aint no better!

Most Successful?

WOE - F-15/F-16/A-10

WOI - F-15/F-16

WOV - A-4

FE - Spad 220hp

As far as the F-15 in WOE goes my tally was a lot better than 80-0

I always get my MiG in a tomcat, even if there's an 8 to 2 advantage. Knock off two from long range with phoenixes, two from medium range with sparrows and finish the rest with guns and 'winders. And that killer radar sure helps for orienting yourself in a fight that spreads out quickly.

I have 2.

The Intruder, and any of the F-111 series..

Unless I get killed by the random SA-5, they always gets me home, and lay some TREMENDOUS damage on the bad guys. You can go low and fast in either, and they are viciously accurate at dropping iron bombs. Pound for Pound, they are Par Excellence in Strike, CAS, and SEAD missions.

I highly doubt that is accurate.

Not trying to start a pissing contest here, just share information. There is one instance I recall reading about from the Iran-Iraq war where an F-14 made a successful landing back at base with most of a wing shot off and the engine on that side out as well. So, an Iranian pilot landed the jet single-engine, single-wing - and those were the less than stellar TF-30 engines. Also, there were plenty of test flights made with the Tomcat in an asymmetrical wing sweep configuration and it still flies just fine. They also proved that it could be landed safely with one wing completely swept and the other unswept.

Back to topic.

I'll amend my first answer to include the F-14. Now that I think of it, I've only been shot down once by a sneaky SAM in the Turkey.
