Neat. That might make me try models conversion..Tk plugin only works in 3ds 2009 right?

First, we should check further if it is "legal" : look so, some kind of "abandonware" old alphasim models

Second most planes are already in SF2, and often "better"

yup, also as legal stuff goes from old FS2004/FSX user point of view:

back in the days long gone Alphasim models were payware selled through numerous sites but well few years back they started giving them away for free, the older models that were really OLD say Fs2002/CFS2 compatible level

so this looks like legit thing

Hope someome has a lot of freetime, cause these will be almost as much work as sarting from scrach. If it's one we already have, i wouldn't bother.

I went through the list and there are a few that interest me, float planes and the Swordfish. Will look some more at them, I'm thinking Ground AC for some. @ Wrench. Make a list if your interested in any for ground use. If you have time? ;)

you mean 'parked statics'?? I'll look it over .. sometimes, when plotter correctly, they won't interfere with the game-generated parked birds.

Lately we see a plethora of franken or semi-franken planes, with a lot of energy and skills involved. But even with the best modding talents, all these models suffer, to some greater or smaller extent, from the flaws and drawbacks due to the use of Franken methods.

Already in 2009, Phil from Alphasim gave authorization to export its freeware titles to other games, on the condition that they remain free (http://www.armaholic.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=6304).

Therefore here's a first batch of models ever released as freeware by Alphasim (no less than 126 models/sub models for the Part 1 and 181 models/submodels for the Part 2, mostly from the Virtavia directory, including the so called "really old models" that are included there ...and happen to be perfect for Il2 exporting, and the Sea Venoms models that for some reason do not appear in the Virtavia directory although they were released as freeware in the past) I'll upload the rest of the models at a later date, after completing their extraction.

I've these models on mediafire, so modders can use them if they wish.

With a huge thanks to Phil from Aviasim!

I wonder who he could have possibly been talking about!!! OTH, their newer stuff is pretty good.

---

Raven, that Mavis is exactly what I'm looking for , for use parked on the PTO maps. The Mariner looks good too, but I'd rather have a PBY (but, hey,  I can find uses for damn near anything!!)

russ, I'm trying to figure out the twin-engine floatplane... He-115??

the Beaufighter looks like at late mk 6 or early mk.10...something Daniel had planned, but has been 'overcome by events'.

we could use new Beauforts ...

it's just a pity they DO need so much work to get into SF2.

a LOT of very useful stuff there

My two cents...tried with other free models that where made available before...a lot of time parts don't line up, gaps that show as towlines in the game and are hard to find, no animation have to be remapped and skinned, faces that show half on one side and half on the other side ..at the end you get frustrated and say F-it let me start from scratch...in my book best use for these is reference....of course that brings out that old reverse engineering demon again

Would be nice if models that can replace DAT birds go further. Caspian Sea Monster would be interesting to see too......

I looked into the (then) Alphasim freeware models back in 2008 and 2009, and found most of them to be quite low-poly.  In fact, I recall getting another modeler involved in this (IIRC, it was Fastcargo), and he came to the same conclusion, that they were potentially more work to finish, then if one had built them from scratch.

The list, though, was no where near as long back then, as all they had for freeware models were the F-86 and possibly the F-117. They also offered a  (finished) Kuznetsov and Su-33 model combo for FS2004.  We do have Marcelo's Kuznetsov model that will soon be out, as soon as it escapes from the paint shop.

Wrench The Mavis is the first thing I looked at. As far as a PBY, mine are on hold until I'm done with the ?-??. :)

My 2cents gentlemen; you really don't want to go down that road ..even though most of these models are very good they are very dated construction-wise; the corrections that have to be made..the re-mapping,,the animations..the re-adjustment of pivots..the flipping of polys ..  personally i figure it'd take more time to fix these than to model from scratch..you'd best be off starting over ..

Mostly I'd agree that their more work then their worth, but for a static AC some of them are not too bad. And as a Reference their a gold mine.

Dreamk made a lot of models for Il2 and I would say that he is basically right : remember that a lot of models are hasty conversions of freeware meshes, that we do not usually find on combatace  ;) ).

And on combatace, some models are good but old and start to show their age.

I have in mind the TMF Mirage IIIE cockpit for instance : very accurate but according to today's standards, it would require more polygons.

See what was done for the super-etendard too.

Anyway, they have the same problems for il2 mods : 1% good models, 19% models are "acceptable", and 80% of bad mods (including mines).

We can also tell the same thing about FSX.

The point is when somebody points this out, the 1% good modders feel offended and they temselves forget the 99% ugly mods.
