  1. SF2 Vought TF-8 Crusader Pack 4/8/2016

    = For SF2 (Full-4/5 Merged Reccomended) =

*Note: you =MUST= have, as stated above have, at minimum, a Full-4 merged install, as this mod makes use of many items, from several versions of the games. A Full 5 with NA is reccomended. There are many "bits" required, most notably the cockpit referenced is from the A-7E Corsair II.*

This package contains a (somwhat) fictional outgrowth of the Vought F-8 Crusader. In the Real World ™, only ONE TF-8 Crusader was built (it's on display in the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensocla, FL). This assumes that Vought and the Navy chose to expand the production/refurbishment of early model Crusaders into the 2 seat variant seen here. The aircraft has expanded capabilites in both Air-to-Air and Air-to-Ground mission tasking (see Notes for more details on the factory modifications, and squadron decals used.)

This package contains the following skin sets:

    USN, early (Gull Grey/White
    USMC, early (Gull Grey/White
USN, Late (TPS low visibility grey)
    French Navy, early (Gull Grey/White)
French Navy, late (Overall Blue) - both tagged for Flotille 12

The SF2 "date switch" is used for the USN and French Skins. The USMC skin stays in Grey/white for it's service life. All skins are in jpg format. Damage textures are in DDS format.
All markings are decals, and with few exceptions, reference stock 3W Modex and Squadron tail markings. Decal randomization for all skins is TRUE. All weapons used are also stock items (note: the WalleyeIIIER -may- be an SF2NA only weapon; this has not been confirmed)

As always, fairly easy to follow, detailed install instructions are included. So, please read them. Indeed, one would be well served by reading all the Notes section as well.

    History

Whilst the Great War was raging in Europe, the Balkans, and Mesopotamia, Countries not involved in the conflict, started breaking away from the powers that had previously held dominion over their countries, One of these countries was part of the joint occupation by Britain and France since the days of Napoleon, the area of Sharnak in the Middle East. in 1917 , whilst the French and British were other wise occupied, the populace rose up, and wrested power from the foreign administration, in a bloodless coup, as the French and British were heavily occupied with more pressing concerns, this was mostly ignored.
A government was duly and hastily formed, drawing members from the 2 main tribes of Sharnak. unfortunately, these 2 tribes of mainly nomadic people, were usually more interested in murdering each other, than actually getting along and running the new Nation state, in late 1918, a skirmish brewed up, over the rights to a sand dune mine in central Sharnak ( Sand being the main industry of the country, and as the war was going on sand for sandbags was in great demand, and Sharnak sand was the best sand bag sand in the world) The unrest turned into full scale and very bloody civil war, with the East of the country seceding and claiming sovereignty for the Eastern half of the country. The new country, named themselves Paran, and was ruled by a single and powerful clan of fierce Bedouin. the west of the country then named themselves Dhimar, and was a kingdom as the Shah was in that side and was loved by his people. and a kingdom was kept as the political rulers of the country.

The civil war continued sparodically for 18 months, during which time, both sides had managed to procure aircraft form various sources, There was a core of seasoned pilots, who had learned to fly whilst flying for the British, French, Russians and the Turks..

The Dhimari Army was in dire need of a ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft, much mooting, pondering, and attempts to buy either DH9's or Bristol Fighters from the British, were met with derision, from the British Air Ministry ( also probable annoyance over the coup ! ) So as these excellent aircraft were not available for purchase, they acquired the next best thing........or not, they managed to procure some clapped out Martinsydes which were war weary and rather tatty ( to say the very least ) however, with much time and sterling effort, they restored and refurbished the aircraft to a flying, and operational standard. the Aircraft though outdated, and very slow, dis have some very big teeth, it could carry a very healthy bomb load, was fitted with cameras, and was well armed (One fixed Lewis, and one on a mount behind the cockpit ) although the pilots found the workload to be rather high, as the aircraft was so slow and ponderous, operating 2 different gun groups, the bombs and the cameras all together required the dexterity of a 4 armed sword juggler. However, the aeroplane performed its duties with great fortitude, was reliable, and tough. one of the first true multi role aircraft on the battlefield !

    INSTALLATION

all files are included in the download, decals, guns weapons are all there, also the updated Nations.ini, and SquadronList.ini to allow the aircraft to show up, this aircraft has been converted from First Eagles , so the guns are new, and will not be in any SF2 weapons packs , so make sure you do install these guns, or else you wont be able to shoot anything !! I have also included a sound file for the Lewis gun as that needs to be installed to give the guns the correct sounds, all other sounds are also included for engines etc. I strongly advise you update your soundlist.ini with new entries ( if you are unsure how to do this, take a quick look at the forums, and there are detailed instructions for this there ) Other than that, just treat this aircraft as you would any other upload to SF2 .
The aircraft has a very nice bomb load ,but be aware, your wingman and or flight mates may use these at very random intervals, if they use them at all !! BE WARNED !! . The AI does seem to sometimes have a wobbler, and do its own thing, just ignore it, and get on with flying, and rack up some kills. I recommend letting the AI fly this aircraft as you will find your wingman bobbing about all over the sky quite annoying, also the thing is no fighter !! so prepare to be killed....lots.....and repeatedly.....over and over.......many many times.......no, really, trust me !! hahahaha

    *= For SF2 -ONLY-!! Full-4/5 Merged Reccomended =*

*** NOTE! you MUST have the stock 3rdWire Hunter F.6 as part of your merged installs; this aircraft mod references this stock cockpit. ***

This package contains a NEW "What If..." aircraft for Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, and several Commonwealth & export customers, as used in the mid-1950s through the late 1960s. Everything is included, excpeting the cockpit, as noted above

Skins included are for the following countries/units:

No. 830 NAS RN FAA (HMS Eagle)
No. 882 NAS RN FAA (HMS Ark Royal, circa 1962)
No. 860 MLD (HNLMS Karel Doorman, circa 1956)
No. 805 Sqdn RAN (HMAS Melbourne)
VF-870 RCN (for either of the 2 CVs circa 1957)

The SF2 "date switch" is use for the Royal Navy skins. Other are selectable via their countries from the Select Service drop down, and will start on the dates stated in the userlist ini.

All markings are decals, and decal randomization is TRUE. The only excpetion is for VF-870, as it's rudder markings are painted on.
The aircraft is fully carrier certified. All weapons used are stock 3W items - hence the need for Full-4/5 merged. A pilot figure, and the drop tanks are included.
Wingfold and canopy operate via the Standard Animation Keystrokes ; Shift/9 for the wings, Shift/0 (zero) for the window.

As always, fairly easy to follow, yet detailed install instructions are included. PLEASE read them!!! Also, as usual, give the "Notes and Comments" section a read, too.

  4. Convair Model 201 for Strike Fighters 2

    ----------------------------------------------
    What this is :

This is the CTOL version of Convair's Model 200 VSTOL entry for the Sea Control Ship fighter competition of the early 70's. It also reappeared later as GD Model 218 during the VFAX competition which ultimately ended up as the F-18.

There are quite a number of artist's impressions and 3-view floating around, of which most ones show a more pointy delta planform and underwing Sidewinders. That would be the earlier iterations, which by 1975 or so would have evolved into what you see here.

The original documentation only mentions 2 AIM-9 + 2 AIM-7 but I added 2 underwing and a centerline station because it makes the plane a bit more fun to use and isn't totally implausible.

    ----------------------------------------------
    More Stuff:

It uses sounds from SF2E so your mileage may vary :o

  8. ************************ United States Air Force F-118 Pack for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2 ************************

This pack contains several United States Air Force versions of the Vought Raider F-118 - created by Cocas (Daniel) - and it has been tested on a May '13 fully merged install of all 5 games.

***Aircraft can be found under "VOUGHT F-118" in the In-Game Menu***

    History
    --------

In 1974 the USAF started the Light Weight Fighter competition for a new light combat Fighter to complement the F-15A Eagle and in this version of History the winner was..........The Vought F-118A Raider.

This pack is designed to roughly mirror the service history of the F-16C/D/I so the design of a Blk30 F-118 is fairly similar to that of a Blk30 F-16 for example although not exactly the same (i.e the cockpits will be different).

    Installation
    -------------

Unzip then copy and paste the Effects/Flight/Objects folders into your Mod folder, usually C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2 **or whatever yours is called**.

    AIRCRAFT
    ------------

    Aircraft Specific Info -
    ----------------------

Vought Raider F-118 Block 30/32 ('87 - '01) - With the "A" initially designed as a fighter with a limited Air to Ground capability the USAF modified it into the "C" variant, a capable multi-role aircraft able to dominate the airspace whilst improving the original designs limited Air to Ground capabilities.

Vought Raider F-118 Block 40/42 ('02 - '08) - This upgrade saw everything from the engine to weapons to the avionics all upgraded, especially with the addition of Conformal Fuel Tanks (CFT's) to allow the pylons to be fully loaded with the latest smart weapons instead of fuel tanks creating a true multi-role aircraft whilst still allowing it to retain a significant Air to Air capability should the need arise.

Vought Raider F-118 Block 50/52 ('09 - '40) - This massive upgrade once more saw everything uprated, from the engine to the weapons it can carry and, with this version, the avionics were all hugely upgraded, allowing it survive far behind any future enemys lines, a mission for which it was especially designed. In addition to the CFT's fitted on the Block 40/42 there was now a Spine Rack fitted to store all the extra Avionics required to make this the most advanced F-118 in the USAF's inventory.

    OTHER INFO
    -----------

    Issues -
    ------

Bonus Skin - In the Blk 50/52 aircraft there's a Greek skin too!
The mapping is "interesting" around the nose with some skin stretching. The USAF Euro skin was really tricky, so much so that I wanted to punch a thousand cute kittens in their cute little faces by the end, after spending hours/days trying to get the edges to match up! So sadly some of it's not as good as I'd like but the PS templates are out to so hopefully you can improve on my skin.

Weapons - PLEASE download Ravenclaw007's weapons packs, they are truely fantastic and include many unique Israeli weapons which haven't been included in this pack.

  10. La-15 "YAMAAM"

    HISTORY

Pending the acquisition of Mig-17 / J-3 aircraft for the Parani air Force. a purchase of La-15's was made ( one of the last purchases from the USSR) the capability of this aircraft was similar to the Mig-15/J2 that was in use by the Army (I.P.A.F.A.) and it was felt that until Mig-17/J3 airframes could be acquired, that this aircraft was ideal as a temporary fighter/interceptor, with the additional idea that when the Mig's were in use that this aircraft would make a good primary jet trainer for pilots converting to Jet powered aircraft, so the front line service life of the YAMAAM ( Dove ) was quite short, and many Parani pilots cut their teeth on this type.

    Installation and blah blah

Just a quick repaint of the LA-15 originally done by PC-Pilot. As with all my uploads, this is an all in one package, all the bits and bobs are there for you including PilotData ( for the Squadrons) and Nations.ini .So unpack to your saved game folder, it has been tested on a fully merged install. so I assume it will work on any non merged set ups too. So... off you jolly well pop, and go and shoot down some accursed infidel Dhimari !!!

  11. AVIA-S199 "SAIF"

    HISTORY

The Parani Air Force ( I.P.A.F.) had been using ex lufwaffe BF-109 G10's and the Avia S-99 since the end of the "Western Infidel War" and these airframes were getting tired and worn out, as they were usually second and third hand cast off, and ex "hangar Queens" which had been scavenged from many sources, When the IDF started using the Avia S-199 , the Parani Ministry of Defence liked what they had seen ( even though there were certain issues with this aircraft type) Early in 1947 they approached their Czech Military advisors, and acquired brand new airframes direct from Avia. One Squadron (Huntress Squadron) of the Imperial Air Force was equipped fully with the Avia-S-199 which was given the name of Saif, or Scimitar. intended as a stop gap aircraft, until the MIG-17 or J-3 was available, these aircraft actually remained in service up until the mid 70's.

  12. Gripen NG for the United States – F-39A/B Griffin Blk 1/5

    1.0

Due to a change in US government policy driven by cost overruns, project delays and negative public (aka voter) opinion the USAF F-35A order is halved. To make up the shortfall a cheaper 4.5 generation aircraft is sought to replace the rest of the F-16 fleet.

New built F-16s are considered but ultimately a license built US specific version of the Gripen NG is chosen. To help offset the loss of the cancelled F-35 order Lockheed Martin is awarded the contract to build the F-39 along with the US specific modifications. The most important of which is full data/ sensor integration and cooperative war fighting with the F-35A fleet.

The USAF designate the US built Gripen the F-39A/B Griffin. The first Block 1 Griffins off the Lockheed Martin production line are identical to the JAS-39E/F and equip CONUS Air National Guard units to replace the F-16 in the air sovereignty role. At the same time Lockheed Martin produce a handful of developmental airframes to integrate the full USAF arsenal of weapons and apply some of the technology from the F-35 program. The probe air-to-air refuelling system is also replaced with a flying boom receptacle. The end result is the F-39A/B Block 5 which is used to replace the F-16 in those USAF units that are not going to be equipped with the F-35A. The Block 5 Griffin is fully compatible with the F-35 and shares the same data link technology. This means Griffin equipped units can be used cost effectively in the low intensity warfare role but when required can be ‘force multiplied’ by the F-35A in a modern battlefield. All Block 1 aircraft will be upgraded to Block 5 standard.

    Included in this mod are:

    - F-39A Block 1 Griffin

    - F-39B Block 1 Griffin

    - F-39A Block 5 Griffin

    - F-39B Block 5 Griffin

    - F-39A Block 5 Griffin Aggressor

    - F-39B Block 5 Griffin Aggressor

    - 14 different USAF/ANG squadrons

    - 22 different skins

To Install simply un pack and drop into your mods folder.

    Notes:

    - The Block 1 aircraft have a reduced weapons capability compared the Block 5 as they can only carry the weapons currently cleared on the Jas-39 Gripin (Aim-9M, Aim-120C etc) this is reflected in the loadout.ini.

    - The pilot is a re-skinned JHMCS model to look like the Cobra HMD that is integrated with the Gripin (see last screenshot below).

    - F-39B Block 5 Aggressor has a cannon even though the two seater doesn’t have one. This is for game play so it will engage you as an aggressor aircraft.

  13. AVIA S-92 "SAQR"

    HISTORY

When the Parani Ministry of Defence approached the Avia company to purchase its S-199 and CS-199's, mention of purchasing Jet powered aircraft was made. The Avia Company, had acquired the plans and technical details of the ME-262, and had commenced production of their own version of this aircraft. The Parani MOD realised that this would be a cheap and cheerful way of breaking into jet powered machines, and, so, purchased a batch of the Avia S-92's they however asked for the original 4 gun pack to be replaced as they felt that just the 2 guns as fitted in standard S-92's was inadequate. The aircraft entered service in 1946 , and were in operational service up until the mid 50's with number 4 Squadron I.P.A.F. The Aircraft was given the name SAQR or Falcon, and was held in great admiration by the pilots that flew this aircraft.

    Installation and blah blah

  14. LI-2 "HESSAN"

    HISTORY

Whilst the I.P.A.F.A. had been equipped with the AN-2 HESSAN, it was felt the requirement for the I.P.A.F. was more important and in need of a larger aircraft. So licence built copies of the C-47 Skytrain were purchased, from the USSR this aircraft the LI-2 CAB was issued to 2 squadrons of the I.P.A.F. Number 6 Squadron being a special ops unit, strangely, the name HESSAN was retained for this aircraft, mening that 2 different aircraft types bore the same name , although the were completely different airframes, it was felt the nomenclature HESSAN, or Horse, was applicable in both case ( In reality I cocked up, and forgot I already named the AN-2 the HESSAN, and I'm too lazy to change the names over !! ) As we all know the C-47 and its derivatives, are a long lived and popular aircraft still in wide use today.

  15. The Martin XB-51 was an American "tri-jet" ground attack aircraft. It was designed in 1945 and made its maiden flight in 1949. It was originally designed as a bomber for the United States Army Air Forces under specification V-8237-1 and was designated XA-45. The "A" ground attack classification was eliminated the next year, and the XB-51 designation was assigned instead. The requirement was for low-level bombing and close support. The XB-51 lost out in evaluation to the English Electric Canberra which entered service as the B-57.

  17. 'What if' F/A-16C Blk 30/32 CAS Vipers

    Background:

In the 1980's, the USAF started setting aside F-16s for the planned A-16 modification, a dedicated CAS version. In 1989, the designation block 60 was reserved for the A-16. The A-16 Block 60 was to be equipped with a 30 mm cannon. This project failed because the 30 mm gun would heat up and singe the inner components of the left fuselage.

The Block 60 did not go into production and the A-16 became wrapped up in the debate about close CAS. The supporters of the A-16 project wanted the USAF to replace its A-10A Thunderbolt with A-16's, arguing that the A-10 was too slow to survive above a high-tech battlefield. Detractors argued that the A-16 had insufficient range and load-carrying capability to make an effective attack aircraft, and, in addition, it would be too vulnerable to enemy anti-aircraft fire.
However the USAF was ordered to retain two wings of A-10 aircraft for the CAS mission. No order for the A-16 was ever placed.

When the USAF was forced to opt for the A-10 instead of the A-16, the decision was made to retrofit up to 400 existing Block30/32 F-16C/D's with new equipment to perform the CAS and BAI (Battlefield Air Interdiction) missions, effectively killing the A-16 program. Modifications would include a GPS, Digital Terrain System, system hardening, modular mission computer, and an Automatic Target Handoff System.

A prototype Block 30 was based at Shaw AFB and went through numerous physical adjustments. Official designation, was to be F/A-16. In January 1992, this plan too was abandoned in favor of using LANTIRN Block40/42 F-16C/D's.

The USAF was reluctant to let the idea of a dedicated CAS F-16 go, and planned to replace its A-10's with F-16s fitted with a version of the Warthog's Avenger cannon. In November 1988, the 174th TFW New York ANG transited from the A-10A to the F-16A/B block 10, becoming the first unit to operate the F-16 in a CAS support role.

During Desert Storm, their F-16A/B aircraft were equipped with the GPU-5/A Pave Claw pod on the centerline station.

If the tests were successful, there were plans for a fleet of F/A-16C's with the same armament. To demonstrate the concept, the AF installed Pave Penny avionics, 30mm gun pods and European One paint jobs on 7 F-16C's. A single F-16D was given similar treatment with a Falcon Eye system as well. These aircraft flew from Nellis with the 'WA' tailcode.

The F-16s from the 174th were deployed to the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm, but the project proved to be a miserable failure. Precision aiming was impossible for several reasons:

    • The pylon mount isn't as steady as the A-10's rigid mounting;
    • The F-16 flies much faster than an A-10, giving the pilots too little time approaching the target;
    • Firing the gun shook the aircraft harshly and made it impossible to control;
    • Essential CCIP (continuously computed impact point) software was unavailable.

Pilots ended up using the gun as an area effect weapon, spraying multiple targets with ammunition, producing an effect rather like a cluster bomb. It took only a couple of days of this before they gave up, unbolted the gun pods, and went back to dropping cluster bombs.

And so the F/A-16C plan was quietly forgotten....

BUT...... What if the project was a success?

And so I give you the F/A-16C Blk 30/32 CAS Viper:

    3 separate aircraft:

    - F/A-16C Block 30 1986- 1993 (1986 Service date makes it NATO Fighters 5 compatible, 1991 would be more realistic.)
    - F/A-16C Block 32 1993- 2003
    - F/A-16CM Block 30 2003+

Unique CAS loadouts including the Pave Claw 30mm gun pods. There are heaps of extra loadouts if you have a look with the mission editor.

All F/A-16C have the Falcon Eye FLIR pod on the nose in front of the canopy. It was slaved to the pilot’s helmet which had a helmet mounted display. Basically anywhere the pilot looked at night he would see the world in infrared. It was also the West’s first HMD with targeting information, weapons cueing, navigation and terrain avoidance ques.

There are Euro-one style skins for the early F/A-16C, the latter blocks two have a mix of normal F-16 camo skins and a lighter ghost grey style like on the A-10.

    To install:

Drop into your C:\Users\xxxxxx\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters XXXXX

Included in the folder 'NATO Fighters 5' is a modified 1986 Red Storm NATO Fighters campaign that includes the F/A-16. It will show up as an extra campaign and not affect any of the NATO Fighters 5 campaigns.

  18. ************************ Israeli Air Force F-118 Pack for STRIKE FIGHTERS 2 ************************

This pack contains several Israeli Air Force versions of the Vought Raider F-118 - created by Cocas (Daniel) - and it has been tested on a May '13 fully merged install of all 5 games. It requires SF2:Israel for the A/C serial numbers to show up on the tails, however, it will run without SF2:I but the tails will be blank.

The aircraft's low cost and advanced design meant that it was exported widely, with Israel in particular buying a sizeable amount and modifying them well beyond what the original designers had ever thought possible.

This pack is designed to roughly mirror the service history of the F-16C/D/I so the design of a Blk30 F-118 is fairly similar to that of a Blk30 F-16 for example.

    Installation
    -------------

Unzip then copy and paste the Effects/Flight/Objects folders into your Mod folder, usually C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2 **or whatever yours is called**.

    ------------

    Aircraft Specific Info -
    ----------------------

    Single Seat -

Vought Raider F-118C 'Netz-A' ('87 - '94) - Initially designed as a fighter with a limited Air to Ground capability the IAF transformed it into a capable multi-role aircraft, able to dominate the airspace whilst improving the original designs limited Air to Ground capabilities.

Vought Raider F-118H 'Barak' ('95 - '30) - This upgrade saw everything from the engine to weapons to the avionics all upgraded, especially with the addition of Conformal Fuel Tanks (CFT's) to allow the pylons to be fully loaded with the latest smart weapons instead of fuel tanks creating a true multi-role aircraft whilst still allowing it to retain a significant Air to Air capability should the need arise.

    Two Seat -

Vought Raider F-118D 'Netz-B' ('87 - '94) - Originally designed as a trainer the IAF transformed it into a superb Strike & Wild Weasel aircraft. More importantly for the IAF, the 2nd crew member also turned it into a deadly CAS aircraft.

Vought Raider F-118I 'Barak II' ('95 - '04) - This upgrade saw everything from the engine to weapons to the avionics all upgraded, especially with the addition of Conformal Fuel Tanks (CFT's) to allow the pylons to be fully loaded with the latest smart weapons instead of fuel tanks which, with it's 2nd crew member and advanced avionics, makes it ideal for the Wild Weasel role.

Vought Raider F-118M 'Sufa' ('05 - '30) - This massive upgrade once more saw everything uprated, from the engine to the weapons it can carry and, with this version, the avionics were all hugely upgraded, allowing it survive far behind any future enemy's lines, a mission for which it was especially designed. In addition to the CFT's fitted on the Barak II there was now a Spine Rack fitted to store all the extra Avionics required to make this the most advanced F-118 in Israel's inventory and possibly the deadliest aircraft in the Middle East.

    OTHER INFO
    -----------

    Issues -
    ------

Python Missiles & Fuselage Pylons - Due to the size of the rear fins on the Python Missiles then can sometimes touch the stores put on the inboard wing pylon.

MApping - The mapping is difficult around the nose with some skin stretching.

Weapons - PLEASE download Ravenclaw007's weapons packs, they are truly fantastic and include many unique Israeli weapons which haven't been included in this pack.

  20. SF2 Avro VZ-9 Aerocar Pak 10/15/2015

= For SF2 (Any & All, Full 4/5 Merged Reccomended)

A "What If" aircraft for you enjoyment.

** Can be used in any install that has access to the A-4B & A-4E Skyhawks hence the need for either a Full 4 or Full 5 Merged Install, as both these cockpits are refrenced for the 2 aircraft. Also, serial number decals from the CF-104 and F-105D are used. You must have these aircraft to gain access to the various bits.**

Some reworking of Simon Porter's Avro Aerocar from 2005, brings it (pretty much!) up to SF2 standards. Be advised, however, there are still a few small issues; most of which stem from the fact the aircraft is one continious mesh, with no sub meshes. This is the main reason that most markings are painted on. See "Change Log" for details.

This pack contains 2 aircraft, and is based on the assumption (oh! that word!) the major bugs had been worked out, and it entered service with the RCAF and USAF for use as a battlefield scout and light attack aircraft.

    Aerocar Mk.I (VZ-9A) with 2 skins (1959 start date):

    RCAF
    USAF
    both in NM finish

    Aerocar Mk.III (VZ-9C) with 4 skins (1965 start date):

    RCAF
    USAF (both early, in NM)
RCAF_L (late, overall dark green ala CF-104)
USAFCamo (USAF Camo SEA T.O. 1-1-4)

The 2 late skins the C use the SF2 "date switch" and will turn on in 1966 (USAFCamo) and 1973 (RCAF_L).

All stock items are used, from cockpits, pilots, weapons, sounds, decal and whatnots. The other add-on items (fake pilot, radar pod, pylons) are included. While skins remain in bmp format, damage textures are in DDS.

When in-game, you'll see on the Aircraft Selection Drop-down...

    VZ-9A Aerocar (Mk.I)
    and
    VZ-9C Aerocar (Mk.III)

As always, fairly easy to follow, detailed install instructions are included. So, please read them. Simon Porter's original readme is included for historical purposes.

  21. F-4 Phantom II in Royal New Zealand Air Force service ('What If')

    Background (factual):

In mid 1964 Operational Requirement No. 5/Air called for a tactical combat aircraft to replace the Canberra. Specifically a long range aircraft with the primary role of counter-air/interdiction and secondary roles of close air support and air defense.

In June 1965 The Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice-Marshal (AVM) Morrison was quoted as wanting 18 F-111 aircraft for the RNZAF at a cost of £1.5 million per aircraft. The public and media supported the idea but the Chief of Defense Staff (who was a Naval Officer) and the acting Prime Minister publicly opposed the purchase.

In August 1965 the Chiefs of Staff Committee rejected the idea of acquiring long-range interdiction aircraft and in September agreed that close air support should be the primary role of the new combat aircraft.

In December came Air Staff Requirement No. 12 with the following requirements of the new combat aircraft:

    - Ability to provide effective air support to ground forces.
    - Highly reliable and robust
    - Self defense capability to evade or counter supersonic interceptors and surface-to-air missiles.
    - Long range.
    - Ability to operate closely with American and Australian forces.

By May 1966 the RNZAF had finished evaluating six candidate aircraft:

    - F-4C Phantom II
    - A-7A Corsair II
    - Mirage IIIO
    - F-5A Freedom Fighter
    - F-104G Starfighter
    - A-4E Skyhawk

In August 1966 the RNZAF officially asked the government to purchase 16 F-4 Phantoms at a total cost of £19 million.

Now remember AVM Morrison making it known he wanted the F-111? He would later go on to admit he never wanted the F-111 he had wanted the F-4 all along but given the cost of the F-4 he wanted to make it look more attractive (cost wise) by putting it next to the F-111.

The minister of Defense then announced the final stage of the evaluation had been reached and a decision was a few weeks away. The purchase of the F-4 seemed to be all but done...

BUT the Treasury department now intervened and recommended purchasing the F-5! The RNZAF High Command was furious! But ultimately powerless to halt the path to purchasing the A-4 Skyhwak that had just begun.

Over the next year the RNZAF, Cabinet Defense Committee, Treasury, the Finance Minister and the Chief of Defense wrangled over purchasing the F-4 or an alternative (F-5 or A-4). Then at the end of 1967 the New Zealand Currency was devalued and a squadron of F-4 Phantoms was now instantly out of New Zealand’s price range. It was either 11 Phantoms or 16 Skyhawks. So the Skyhawk it was.

So if the Treasury Department hadn't intervened in the procurement process towards the end of 1966 it seems entirely likely that New Zealand would have placed and order for the F-4 Phantom II at the end of that year!

And so I give you the F-4D Phantom II in RNZAF Service 1969 to 2002.

I chose the F-4D as when the order would have likely been placed in late 1966/ early 1967 the F-4D was the current USAF production model as the first of the F-4E models were only just being built as part of the USAF F-4D contract.

The RNZAF F-4D models are built to the same standard as the last USAF F-4D coming off the production line in the late 60's. However like the A-4K in real life they are 'fitted for but not with' ECM/ RHAW equipment. This means the wiring, sensors and cockpit RHAW display are installed but the actual 'black box' control units are not.

The reason for this (as in real life with the A-4K) was not an economy measure as most references state (including the Third Wire manual) but because the equipment was in such demand by US forces for use in Vietnam. So the aircraft were delivered without them but with the intention of fitting them at a latter date. However that day simply never came and this is possibly where the additional cost of purchasing/ installing them played a part in it not happening.

The Kiwi F-4D Phantoms are capable of caring the full range of the USAF Phantom arsenal including first generation smart weapons. However only the Mk 82/83/84 series bombs and unguided rockets are used by the RNZAF. For the air-to-air role the SUU-23/A gunpod, AIM-7E and AIM-9E are chosen with the AIM-4 Falcons performance in Vietnam causing the RNZAF to steer well clear of it.

    Four separate Aircraft:

F-4D Phantom II RNZAF - Initial aircraft delivered in 1969 fitted for but not with ECM/ RHAW equipment.

F-4D Phantom II (72) RNZAF - By 1973 the redundant RHAW display has been removed from the cockpit as well as the empty IRST pod under the nose that was to house the RHAW gear.

F-4D Phantom II (78) RNZAF - Second hand attrition aircraft from USAF stocks delivered in 1985 in preparation for the project Kahu upgrade of the fleet.

F-4D Phantom II (88) Kahu RNZAF - In 1986 a comprehensive $140 million upgrade program is undertaken. Known as project 'Kahu' the heart of the upgrade is replacing the old AN/APG-109 radar with the modern AN/APG-66(NZ) multi-mode radar. The cockpit is modernized with glass displays, HOTAS and a Ferranti wide-angle HUD. Survivability in increased with the ALR-66 RWR and ALE-40 countermeasure dispensers. The MIL-STD 1553B databus and Litton Industries LN-93 inertial navigation system are also installed. The airframes and engines are completely stripped down and given a life extension with almost all of the aircraft wiring replaced. A smoke abatement system is added along with low voltage formation lights.

The aircraft also receive armament upgrades including the capability to fire AIM-9L, AIM-7M, AGM-65B/G and GBU-10 Paveway II laser-guided bombs. The old F-4 Phantom external center drop tanks are also replaced by the F-15 600 gallon HPC tanks as on USAF Phantoms. By the end of 1991 all New Zealand and ex USAF Phantoms have been upgraded to the 'Kahu' standard.

If you wanted all three squadrons in silver it would be easy to swap things around and a 'patch' PSD is included to help you make the changes or to help you introduce your own favourite esquadron.

    BACKSTORY

The stunning success of Operation Market Garden and the subsequent push through Holland and across the North German Plain during the Autumn of 1944 shook the German Military High Command to it's core and eventually led to the assassination of Adolf Hitler on November 10th, 1944 when his Ju-52 transport aircraft was shot down by unknown rogue Luftwaffe pilots as the part of the Fighter Pilots Conspiracy.

The new German Military High Command concluded that it would be in the best interests of the country to throw everything into the defence of the Eastern Front and allow Allied forces in the West to advance without opposition, although the logistical chain made this advance slower than expected. On the Eastern Front there was an almost immediate slowdown in the rate of the Soviet advance and soon Soviet forces inside Poland were held at the Bialystok-Rzeszow line. By January 1944 Allied forces in the West were reaching the borders of Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland hampered only by roads clogged by evacuees and surrendering German troops but by the middle of January 1945 General Patton's Third US Army had punched through to liberate Warsaw before swinging north to meet up with Montgomery's 21st Army Group at Gdansk. By February 8th it was all over and the formal German surrender was signed at Lublin in Eastern Poland by Grand Admiral Karl Donitz and General Walter Bedell Smith and witnessed by Russian General Ivan Susloparov and French General Francois Sevez.

The rescheduled Yalta Conference held on March 1st, 1945 saw Stalin demanding a "Soviet sphere of political influence" in Eastern and Central Europe in return for Soviet support in the Pacific War against Japan by invading Japan through Manchuria. However a last minute briefing made to President Roosevelt by Major General Kenneth Nichols on the progress on the Manhattan Project led to President Roosevelt's decision not to rely on Soviet support in the Pacific and to wholeheartedly support Winston Churchill's demand for free elections and democratic governments in Eastern and Central Europe and specifically in Poland. Churchill reminded all present that in September 1939 Britain and France had gone to war with Germany in support of Poland and nothing other than a free and democratic Poland would suffice. Roosevelt knew that Soviet spies at Los Alamos were aware of the power of the atomic bombs and also how close to operational status and used this knowledge that Stalin also knew to stiffen his resolve. In the horsetrading that followed the Western Allies essentially got what they wanted with regard to Poland with the new border essentially following the 1940 version of the Curzon Line but the the rest of Central and Eastern were handed over to the Soviet sphere of political influence.

The Allied withdrawl from Poland followed during the Spring and Summer of 1945 and culminated in the declaration of "The Third Polish Republic" on November 11th, 1945 a date chosen to coincide with the existing National Independence Day. Also on this day, and wisely for a country now surrounded by Communist states and within the Soviet sphere of influence, the new Polish Government declared its neutrality as an Act of Parliament as part of the Constitution of Poland. Led by Stanislaw Mikolajczyk the new Republic of Poland had a difficult birth but the Polish people reconstructed their battered country with such vigour that by 1948 they had recovered their economy and infrastructure to pre-WW2 levels and continued this economic miracle into the 1950's and beyond.

During this tumultuous time the new Polish Air Force had a similarly difficult birth commencing with the dove-tailing of the Polish elements of the Royal Air Force (active since 1940) with the Polish People's Air Force (created in 1943 in defence of the Soviet Union). Some RAF Spitfire IX's and USAAF P-51D's were left behind at airfields in the West of the country to reform No.302 Squadron at Swidwin and a handful of elderly Yak-1 and damaged Yak-9 fighters were scraped together in the East of the country to reform the 1st Fighter Regiment at Warsaw later renamed No.303 Squadron. During the Spring of 1946 ex-RAF Tempest V's replaced the Spitfires and Mustangs of No.302 Squadron but No.303 Squadron had to wait until 1948 to re-equip with the unpopular Avia S-199 supplied by Czechoslovakia. During 1950 both squadrons began to receive Gloster Meteor F.8's from a cancelled Egyptian order following the UN arms embargo and No.302 Squadron operated the type until 1961 when they were replaced by Dassault Super Mystères. A production licence was granted to PZL (Panstwowe Zaklady Lotnicze - the State Aviation Works) to manufacture the Gloster Meteor F.8 and a total of 96 aircraft were manufactured between 1952 and 1956.
