I was saddened to see this article about the loss of a true hero. If you don't know him, Major Winters and his men were immortalized in the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers, from Steven Ambrose's excellent book of the same name. He was the commander of Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne.

From what I read of him he was a great leader and a humble but courageous man. My own fascination with the military is based around wondering if, under the same circumstances, I could be the sort of man typified by veterans such as Richard Winters.

Gen. George Patton aptly said "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."

Good to see he had a long and good life as he deserved. Others didn´t. Hurra for him and all the others.

Only knew him through the series, which displayed a very brave officer and a born leader. The Brécourt Manor Assault he brilliantly led has also been reproduced in a mission of "Call of Duty". RIP, Major :salute:

"Our Greatest Generation'(Tom Brokaw) is quickly passing away.

They saved the world from tyrants and madmen as boys and young men.

RIP Major Winters. The men of Easy who went before have been waiting to welcome you. :salute:
