To be exactly it was air base Mary-2 (i would prefer to write it Marij, because it had nothing to do with the english girls name Mary). There is a second airbase at this town in Turkmenistan, which is called Mary-1. Mary-2 was the home of the soviet fighter town. The rule was, that the soviets sent entire frontline fighter and fighterbomber regiments (squadrons in western terms) to Mary-2. The regiments got the task to "fight" against the aggressors. This was an contrast to USN Top Gun school, where the task was to "make the best better". The soviets sent all their pilots in, not only the best ones. At the end of the turn, the results of both the individual pilots and the entire regiment were evaluated.
I think the photo, which you posted, was taken during a Mary-2 trip of one of the soviet fighter bomber regiments.
