I was surprised to find this out, I've been modding the game for so long and noticed about it only now. The secret was all about saving a campaign mission. I think that without saving, most of us would have thought a cargo plane was doing a mere Transport mission. I don't think there are any other hidden features, mission type wise. Also, I don't think it's related to SF2NA, I think it existed before it. In DLL files, the extra mission types of SF2NA are called after disabled ones from First Eagles 2 (balloon busting and the likes), while Transfer is before those. Moreover, my ODS campaign is not a Naval one ala SF2NA, thus SF2NA's extra mission types don't work in it.
-
I once saved a campaign generated mission of the ODS 30AE mod and discovered that it somehow assigned a Transfer (not Transport) mission to a cargo plane. After further investigations, it seems it's a valid mission type that can be assigned to AI-only aircraft in ThirdWire's Mission Editor. Just add Transfer to the roles of the aircraft in its data.ini file, and it'll appear in the Mission Editor. I don't know the exact differences between Transport and Transfer, but on the campaign generated mission it seemed to make the aircraft take-off from one airport and land on another. I want to reiterate that this is an AI-only mission type, so it won't appear for the player, regardless of the aircraft type.

Ripping-off Without Shame
Menrva replied to Menrva's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
@bazillius You were credited in the Thanks page of the ODS mod, it's not like I'm taking credit for the work done by other modders. Anyway, I had already decided to remove your MiG-29UB from the next version of the mod. I'm not comfortable with featuring the work of someone who condones piracy and the violation of intellectual properties. Not to mention that I seriously doubt you made that 3d model from scratch yourself. Thank you for your understanding. PS: if you have a beef with me, just say it and insult me in private, I prefer it. This thing has dragged on for too long. When I posted the topic, I simply wanted to advise other respectable modders that their work was being shared without their permission and/or without them knowing. It seems it hurt you in some way (maybe because you like to download stuff from dubious sources) and now you're persecuting me. You want to impose your view on intellectual properties on everyone. You had the right to notify the admins that you didn't want me to include your aircraft in a package, I genuinely didn't notice you were not in the freeware licensing agreement. Just because you don't care about your own works, it doesn't mean others shouldn't care about theirs. But you don't want to understand it, this has been a pointless conversation. From now on, every time I want to post anything, do I need to send you a PM asking for your permission and blessing to do so? It seems so. -

@Sundowner Agree to disagree. I'm not losing my sleep over such issues, but when they involve my works (and those of the modders I closely work with), I want to do my part to try and prevent that they are shared without permission. I may fail at it, but after spending months and even years in making terrains and other mods, I think I have this small right of pointing out where mods shouldn't be downloaded from. It's bad that some others repackage stuff as their own without crediting the original authors, especially since it doesn't take much to do so. I'm like this, like it or not. I won't be silent when things like this happen. You're entitled to being passive on the matter, but I certainly did not expect that my post is being called out more than those pages of piracy. It seems to me things are starting to become the opposite over here as well, and I truly hope it's just a wrong impression. -

@PeacePuma I admit I might have been hot-headed in my post (I'd say reasonably once you see your mods worth months of work being stolen), but my point stands. UllyB confirmed that such page distributes a pirated copy of SF2NA. Of all those 500+ followers, for sure there are some who were just interested in seeing screenshots this hack posted; nothing wrong with that. However, his page still exists, which means that when he uploaded a pirated copy of the game, none of the 500+ followers did a thing about it. There are users who didn't notice and soon unfollowed him once they got aware of what happened, alongside reporting the page. Those may have felt offended by my post and if so I apologize to them. Now that the page has been exposed, to follow a group or account that condones piracy is a deliberate action to my eyes. I want to precise I'm not referring to users who started following that account long ago and even forgot about it. Of all 500+ followers, I feel safe to assume some are still active and condone piracy. One of the reasons why TK left was piracy, and I think it happens to a greater extent than we'd think if pages like this exist on FB. -
While not publicly shown, the previous release of ODS 30AE offered reworked hit boxes and collision points for all of the over 140 aircraft of the mod; some aircraft required major fixes, others only needed small improvements. Referenced model node names have also been corrected in many cases. This (boring and time-consuming) work improves the hit detection of bullets and missiles and of crashes into the ground; overall it puts all of the aircraft of the mod on par with each other, for quality consistency's sake. Another detail that is often neglected regards landing lights. After several days of work, I'm happy to announce that the next release of the mod will offer standardized brightness and range values of landing lights for all of the flyable aircraft of the mod (not player-flyable aircraft will get the same treatment at a later time). Previously, many aircraft were missing landing lights or had broken values that caused rendering issues of landing lights. Each of the over 80 flyable aircraft (sub-variants included, not counting AI-only sub-variants that were also fixed) has been tested carefully to make sure that quality consistency on landing lights is kept throughout the entire roster of aircraft.

Don't be sorry, because you should be ashamed of this comment. This isn't the place for it, but since you bring the matter up, let me explain why it is not comparable. His site is open to everyone, it does not require accounts to access the info, and on top of that no one here is taking credit for the work he has done, I certainly won't. Yesterday's matter was about one guy taking credit of the work of multiple modders (mods that are not freely available without an account and that usually come with ReadMe files detailing explicit wishes not to share them elsewhere), sharing it elsewhere without any permission nor crediting to the original authors. Just because you're fine with someone taking your stuff and share it as their own doesn't mean that it should be fine for me and everyone else.

I told some dear friends of mine, one contacted the Internet Archive so that they can store his website, the other has dumped it all and now it can be browsed offline. Baugher just passed away, I don't feel comfortable about sharing it now, especially since his website is still available. Just wondering what would be a respectful approach, I admire the amount of work Baugher has done over the years.

Sad news. His site (Joe Baugher's Home Page) is a gold mine of references of military aviation history. My deepest condolences to his family and relatives.

@EricJ Also found a separate F/A-18 mod uploaded by another user, I think it's based on your work: F/A-18A mod for Strike Fighters 2: Europe - ModDB Most likely the same F/A-18 that SandMartin once uploaded over here (I think he got banned from CombatACE for it). Then we can assume that even Capun's stuff is being ripped-off. It's just best that we get rid of this guy's page and account ASAP, though who knows which is his account on CombatACE. Just FYI, I sent a PM to the admins of ModDB. I hope not to bother them. I guess they get tons of such posts every day, it's a huge website after all. Don't worry about seeing the ODS 30AE mod listed on ModDB, I posted news about it myself in the past. The mod itself is only available at CombatACE at this time. -
Just wanted to let everyone know that a user active on FB posted news of his "mod" on ModDB with a link to it. He goes by the nickname "Strike Fighters 2" (how original) and has a following of over 500 users. The package is a mix of mods from CombatACE without any permission from the original authors, including yours truly; he made use of the NL terrains package that gerwin and I produced. I also saw one of the terrains by Wrench in the screenshots, and I'm sure he got a lot more in the package I don't dare downloading. The guy apparently made his own skins for aircraft and cockpits, nothing wrong with that, but he's also sharing tons of aircraft and terrains which he definitely not produced, and doesn't even credit the authors at all. If you're among his 500+ followers, consider yourself on par with him, shame on you. We produce tons of mods in free time for free, but that doesn't mean that our work can be shared elsewhere and others can take credit for it without shame. I don't have the power of closing his FB page. I have an account on ModDB though and I reported both his page: Strike Fighters 2 - Lightning 2 - Falcon Edition mod - ModDB and his profile: StrikeFighters2 - ModDB. Due to how ModDB works, multiple reports are needed until the admins consider them. You don't need an account to report it, so I'd appreciate if you click on the " ! " in the Profile box. Thanks in advance.

They are the legends as well. I certainly have done my part in the mod (and I'm not done yet, some stuff will be reworked after the release due to time constraints), but without them the mod wouldn't look nor be as great as it is. Thank you for the kind words, posts such as this are pretty rare and mean a lot to us modders. Due to the heavier quality of textures and 3d models, requirements are not the same of stock SF2. I tried my best at finding a compromise between quality and performance. Fellow @guuruu optimized all sound files and this has even shortened loading times very noticeably. Sometimes I get reports of crashes to desktop, sometimes Nvidia drivers mess things up, reinstalling them seems to work (at least for one member of the development team). I'm currently running the mod on a mere Intel UHD integrated graphics card, but with the DXVK wrapper (Vulkan rendering for DirectX games). Without it I'd experience crashes to desktop as well. The wrapper made my experience smooth and stable. So, I will post instructions on how to download and install DXVK for use on SF2 at the mod's download page once it's released.

No. I would have liked to include YEYEYE's Su-24 cockpit, but I don't have it and I cannot ask YEYEYE anymore for permission. I also wish we had proper cockpits for the Su-20 and the Su-22s (Stary had made some as shown in rather a decade old screenshots), but for now we do our best with what we have. I can only hope the community will work on such additions in the near future.

To add new nations and have them with working insignia like on stock aircraft is not trivial, it is not just a matter of modifying the nations.ini file nor a matter of copying an insignia.tga file. Anyway, it is not necessary to reinvent the wheel, the People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force had been added already with the following mod:

My extended thanks to @yakarov79, @guuruu, @daddyairplanes, @GKABS, @Jimbib, @ravenclaw_007, @ludo.m54, @dtmdragon, @Crusader, @Coupi, @paulopanz, @TaktischesGenie, @simonmiller416, @pvince and @swambast for supporting me and the mod during its latest development. The year 2023 has been bitter for some members of CombatACE.com and it is marked by the sad loss of dear Marty ‘NIELS’ Nielsen. I send the CombatACE.com community all my heartfelt thanks and best wishes. The release of the mod is going to be dedicated to the memory of 'NIELS', who has been one of the major beta testers of the ODS 30AE mod before it got its official public release. Blue skies and tailwinds…

Fans of ThirdWire's Strike Fighters, I'm happy to announce an upcoming re-release of Operation Desert Storm: 30th Anniversary Edition, due between this December and next January (yet to be defined). Since the last public release in January 2022, the development team has worked in spare time for more than a year in overhauling the mod with brand new creations, tons of improvements and bug fixes, additional content and much more. Here below some sneak peeks at what's to come. With the intent of delivering the most complete Gulf War experience, players will now be able to fly with the three unique F-4G aircraft that were deployed to the conflict with Euro I camo (namely serial numbers 69-0269, 69-7566, 69-7234) and the only Grey colored F-111E (serial number 68-0050) deployed alongside the more common camouflaged F-111Es. F-4G aircraft 3d model and skins courtesy of @ravenclaw_007. To complement the already huge list of flyable aircraft offered by the mod, new aircraft have been added! Say hi to the wonderful, brand new Mirage F1EQ-5, Mirage F1EQ-6 and Mirage F1CR by @ludo.m54 and his Mirage F1 Team. Moreover, let's welcome a couple of two-seaters; the F-16D-40 Fighting Falcon by @ravenclaw_007 in its Bahraini livery (skins and decals by @Viper63a) and the F-5F available in Royal Saudi Air Force camo and Grey Bahraini livery (skins and decals by @paulopanz). I decided to allow players to choose from experimental camos devised before the Gulf War for some of the most known aircraft of the war. The A-10As are getting the experimental Flipper and Peanut camouflages (both were meant for the Gulf War, respectively for night time and day time missions) and the F-16C Block 25, serial number 84-1212, gets the unique desert camo it sported during Desert Shield, before it was later decided to remove it. These three new skins have been made by yours truly. The original Lizard camo for the F-16C Block 25 is from the Viper Team, it has been upscaled and detailed a bit more by yours truly, as a bonus. On the fun side of things, additional skins have been added to important aircraft of the war; these include prototype paint schemes for the F-117 and the F-15E, Iranian liveries for the F-5E, MiG-29, F-14A and F-4E, and the VX-4 black livery for the F-14A. These skins exist only for player use and won't be seen in normal gameplay during the campaign and single missions, so rest assured the mod won't be breaking any reality check by default. The F-117 skins are brand new and made by yours truly. Okay, so we get to see more variety and beauty in third-person view, but what about cockpits? Numerous cockpits have received a face-lift in the way of brand new textures, mapping fixes, recolouring, better calibrated and standardized HUD colors, corrected view-points and much more. The Mirage Factory's F-14A cockpit now takes the place of the stock one by ThirdWire which looked inappropriate for early 1990s Tomcats, alongside small texture improvements by yours truly. Cockpits for the F-15C, F-15E, RF-4C and for F-7s were revised by yours truly, given hi-res textures and/or proper recoloring for consistency's sake. The S-3 Viking is now flyable, with Foxmonter's original cockpit getting a fresh hi-res repaint by @Viper63a. MiG and Su cockpits received similar treatment by yours truly, and thanks to the works of @OlWilly and @michaelk. If you've had enough of the sky, do know that our master 3d modelers have been busy producing dozens of brand new 3d models for land and sea warfare. One huge, major update regards the Iraqi ground forces; @yakarov79 produced a vast number of brand new vehicles never seen in a flight simulator before; from exclusive Iraqi versions of known Soviet tanks to not-so common howitzers, proper Iraqi command vehicles, artillery units, APCs and more. The Iraqi ground forces have never been reproduced so accurately before, so you can be sure they are a real treat of the mod. Coalition units also got a high-definition treatment with brand new objects by fellow @guuruu, including the M270 MLRS, M102 and M110 howitzers; he also worked on brand new ship 3d models, from generic boats and bulk carriers and cargo ships, to the Iraqi Zhuk-class patrol boat. Moreover, he reworked all data and sound design of guns used by most ground objects; guns now feature unified warhead weight based on caliber and standardized light range and tracer size. Ground battles feel much more intense and gun-only dogfights now feel incredibly realistic, as you or the AI can survive multiple hits (whereas in stock Strike Fighters it's usually an unrealistic one-shot one-kill). The terrain has received noticeable improvements. All terrain objects have been given DetailLevel statements in order for them to be scalable depending on Ground Object graphics settings; this means that less important terrain objects will appear only at Medium, High or Unlimited settings as required. More importantly, Iraq got brand new airbase 3d models by @Jimbib accurately portraying the layouts of the time, alongside a proper Kuwait Int'l airport and Iran's Kharg island airport. Be on the look-out for easter eggs, especially at Iraq's Tallil Airbase. You'll be able to see @Jimbib's recreation of the Ziggurat of Ur, and you might find a bird by @guuruu inside one of the hangars, seemingly out of context. This actually is an historically correct easter egg; history aviation enthusiasts should know about it. There's also a not-so secret single mission available for you to experience. It's not Gulf War related, apart from the fact you'll be flying an F/A-18A of the VMFA-314 Black Knights. Mission date? July 4 1996. Hmm, what could it be? You can tell the amount of effort and passion that went into the mod by reading the complete changelog below. Changelog: Remade installer to allow users to install the mod folder to a path of their choice. Major overhaul of effects with great help by guuruu; improved Stary's Unified Effects package and fixed various issues. Modified DTV filter data for all avionics files to use a different BlendOp for better visibility at night. Removed double versions (EOGR and ASM) of AGM anti-ship missiles, now only ASM ones are selectable. Removed SA-13 9S80 radar as it is historically inaccurate for Iraq in 1990-1991. Removed anachronistic AIM-7 and AIM-9 missile variants from the Weapons folder. Removed RWR from the F-117A since it never had one in reality, as pointed out by dtmdragon. Removed ECM from the MiG-25PD aircraft as it did not have any in reality. Removed R-73 missile from the mod and corrected loadout of the MiG-29UB to use R-60s instead. Removed JATO from C-130s and from Tu-22s as they are not needed and not proper for the Gulf War scenario. You cannot do anything about it, all effects disappear from a distance, another limitation of the game engine. It's more apparent with effects as big as a nuclear explosion. I made a reworked nuclear explosion effect, it's included in the extra skin pack for the F-22A Raptor add-on. You might want to check that out, but it will still suffer from those rendering limitations.

My thoughts and prayers with your family. I hope she gets the help and understanding she needs. I suffered from depression in my late teen years... not something I'd wish anyone to find themselves in. Wishing you strength in this difficult time.

I think your best chance is to get a virtual machine running on Win11. Not sure what Win version is supported natively by 3ds Max, but you can install pretty much any OS on Oracle's VirtualBox, which I highly suggest. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy to move files between the virtual machine and your real one, usually by using a USB flash drive or an external hard drive.

I was only a six year old, but I remember rather vividly what I saw on TV that day.
