What made everyone play SF2

Have a look for the old ThirdWire Exporter notes, I think they are in the downloads somewhere. -
What made everyone play SF2
Sundowner replied to TheStig's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I got my copy of Strike Fighters Project 1 shipped over to me just after the Wallmart release. Anything with Phantoms got my instant attention..........I "played" it for around 6 months then thought I'd have a go at this skinning lark, I uploaded my first skins to Avsim. In those days SimHq was the place to go & once SF P1 had got itself established a forum was soon set up over there but there still was'nt really anywhere to upload your work to other than Avsim....that's when Don aka Column5 setup the website as seen above. Most of us "modders" were in touch with each other behind the scenes using msn messenger or ICQ and that's the way we got stuff done, files were shuffled about between us so fast it was sometimes hard to keep up, I'd sometime have up to 10 skins on the go at any one time but tried to have one finished completely new ( as is, started from scratch, no lines, paint or anything ) skin a week, either for my own choice or for TMF or whatever project was on the go at the time. Those were the "good old days" always something new coming out, I'm mean "completely new", not like the re-release of a re-release that we get a lot of nowadays, there was always something to look forward to......then TK would release a patch which resulted in the mad scramble to see what's new and what had got removed or ended up broken. It was all good fun though, and even though most of us old heads have moved on or even worse died (RIP) it's good to see that we do still have an active community to keep the old girl alive and kicking. There are still plenty of quality mods available here to keep folks interested and that's what counts. But we must also remember that without Erik providing this haven for all our work then the whole Strike Fighters family would of died off a long time ago. So a big thanks to; TK Modders past and present Erik And good old "joe public" for enjoying what we do. Blimey......it's taken over 2 hours to type this lot up....- 37 replies

All hail Mue!
Sundowner replied to Major Bloodnok's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
My graphics card is a Radeon RX580 8Gb . Last night it was freezing after every third edit, it would actually save the TOD but I could'nt open another, nothing worked. Strange thing is that I could still exit the TOD editor by pressing the x in the top right of the window.....I did'nt need to close it via task manager. Then I'd just restart the editor as normal again. -

Does anybody have issues with the TOD Editor "freezing" after editing 3 or 4 TODs ? I cant remember if it's always done that for me or it's something new. I just have to exit the program & restart it, but it's a bit of a pain when I'm trying to edit 300+ TODs. I'm using Win 10 Pro. -

But you still need an "old" and no longer available legally version of max to use the TW exporter. The whole SF series owes it's success and long life to three things; 1, TK making it "user friendly" in the first place. 2, The "leaked/stolen" F-4E model. 3, Dodgy software. -

@Menrva Sorry mate, I understand where you're coming from and like I say I was'nt trying to cause any rifts or ruffle any feathers. This is the modern age and sadly morals and ethics mean nothing where the internet is concerned. -

It's not worth losing any sleep over piracy issues really. Do you REALLY know how many models and skins etc have been and still are created using pirate copies of 3DS Max and Photoshop ? There would be an awful lot less pages of downloads here at CA without them. Not trying to be argumentative or anything, just stating a fact. A lot of folks here get all wound up about piracy issues while being fully guilty of it themselves. -

WIP Mega THREAD!
Sundowner replied to ErikGen's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
If it's been like that for 20 years it just shows how much the correct serials really matter to most folks...you could put a John Deere tractor number on there & it would make no difference...................but you miss a rivet on a skin............... -
I've recently been asked how my Vietnam map is going... It's been a long time since I touched any of this, maybe one day I'll get the time to do a little more..... But this is a tiny fraction of what's been achieved so far... Everything you see is a Terrain Object, most with collision meshes etc, 99% is new build stuff with new textures etc all done by myself, all with distance lods where needed , all new runways/taxiways hard standings etc as most bases changed enormously during the course of the war. Most of the aircraft are in multiple versions for time frame etc, some have animated props just for eye candy. Vehicles.....way too many types & variations . Lots of thinking "outside the box" to get things to work as I'd like them to .... Very few if any TW original items are now used. Will it ever get finished ?? very unlikely.

@ Soulfreak........check pm......maybe useful for an idea.....or not. -
One step at a time my friend, tread lightly but firmly. She may hate you now but with some care and time hopefully things will come right in the end. This will affect you and your family badly but don't forget you have many friends on here who I'm sure would be great listeners if you ever need to talk.

STRIKE FIGHTERS 3 REQUEST
Sundowner replied to PJB's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
If you read through the old TW forums archive you can see the pattern of the patch release, from the first few hours of elation from new features and "fixes" then like DA said it was all doom and despair soon after. I think TK's biggest regret was ever making the game with the intention of allowing the end user to "customise" it. He as a game developer already should have known that what ever you give the customer it would never be enough, the more folks you get screwing with stuff the more they'll want and the more they'll break.- 69 replies

Slimers can be separate parts of the model, no need to use .tga, just paint them on an area of your map as you would any other parts. I usually paint the "off" light straight onto the skin itself and the "on" version is a separate mesh so paint somewhere else. You need to get the game to call for the "On" light by using its mesh name in the data ini.Brightness can be controlled by settings in max. Take a look at some of Ravenclaw's F-4's to see how the data ini's are set up. There are probably other ways too, this is just how I do it & I'm still learning too.
