Formation of 4 Mirage IIIEZ fly low level to avoid early radar acquisition... Their target is a training camp in Cahama.

img00872.jpg

They dropped bombs

img00876.jpg

Anti-aircraft artillery was expected... ZU-23s were seen firing from two different directions...

img00883.jpg

SA-7 gunners were also present... However even though almost all missiles tracked the targets, Mirages accelerated and missiles missed...

img00882.jpg

During the last raid a single Mirage released its ordnance and started accelerating while climbing... Only seconds before impact an another pilot saw a small missile getting very close...

img00887.jpg

Mirage IIIEZ suffered critical damage and was shot down...

img00889.jpg

While the formation was returning back to base they realized that an another aircraft had been hit by 23mm guns at right wing...

img00894.jpg

Damaged aircraft landed safely and grounded for the necessary repairs. After some days it became operational.

The Cold War Has Gone Hot......

img00663.thumb.JPG.7b60a4115bb7b973d529c939524741fa.JPG

A US mechanized infantry unit has survived and been enveloped.  LSK (East German Air Forces) jets are being scrambled for a dawn attack...

img00686.thumb.JPG.458204392d532730a57dfc84f3609260.JPG

F-16C Block 30s are racing to help the surrounded unit under @Menrva's real sky.

img00623.thumb.JPG.3ce51acd655149dd33d960d4555f80ca.JPG

A F-16 fires off an AIM-9 to fend off the LSK jets.

img00631.thumb.JPG.58ee968f1683bc296c2a57a20a9b67d6.JPG

A LSK Su-22's flares didn't get the job done.

img00694.thumb.JPG.f4388e2cb59e3a1c12cd9b43ab94f9ac.JPG

img00695.thumb.JPG.88c6cae619d86e4ea352031676a8a803.JPG

img00696.thumb.JPG.7afa6326ceaca9c423e69020e2480f3f.JPG

LSK MiG-23BNs lob rockets at the mechanized unit, not realizing a F-16C is on its tail....

img00683.thumb.JPG.bdf529a5ac84b6674f574a7efc434da0.JPG

The F-16C goes to guns on the MiG-23 and then gets to work pounding the ground element:

F-111Ds are inbound to whack an airfield the LSK launched from:

img00646.thumb.JPG.8cf47559272ffd18d76aaf9cb49a82fa.JPG

Only to have MiG-21s launch:

img00659.thumb.JPG.1c394c3de7b44caad1db416e60278e1f.JPG

Ignorant of the new Fishbed threat, the F-16s carry out more low-level attacks on the ground element:

img00638.thumb.JPG.4aca1dcd1c9efe5770982b023cb9c43e.JPG

But the BTR-50s and T-62s are still able to close with the mechanized infantry & supports:

But with only four F-16s for CAS and lacking IR pods - it's 1989 after all, the outcome is almost certain:

Yes folks, the LRASM can be shot down.... just as much as the ASM-3 hypersonic missiles.

From a Nihon Hitori 2020 anti-ship mission with some LRASMs as a test:

My Ukrainian Mi-24 was taken out by a Russian SAM so I just sat back to watch the battle...
