I know I'm going to touch off some people here, but so be it. When it comes to Soviet aircraft, I would really like to read, in English, real accounts, from real ex-Soviet pilots, about what it was like to fly their cold war aircraft. What could these planes do? What couldn't they do? Good, old, fighter pilot tales, tall ones included, I've heard enough tall tales from Americans over the course of my sixty-five years. I'm tired of reading the same old stories, which often quote each other as sources, and when they're contradicted by ex-Soviets, the ex-Soviets must be lying about their own stuff. I've lived long enough to know that Napoleon was right: History is a set of lies; agreed upon. I've heard from the Western pack of liars all my life. Now, I want to hear from the other pack of liars, so I can re-write the agreement, simply for my own amusement. Anyone know of any good books in English? Sorry, I can read Russian.

The Arab Mig Series by Tom Cooper et al - remember Heck that Western writers that interview and source directly from the pilots that were there cant be totally dismissed. Some western writers have owned and flown some of them - not really any mysteries here.

On March 3, 1969 the United States Navy established an elite school for the one percent of its pilots. Its purpose was to teach the lost art of aerial combat and to insure that the handful of men who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world. They, Succeeded Today, the Navy calls it Fighter Weapons School. The flyers call it TOPGUN! What is it all about? Afraid you won’t be singing in bars and dating civilian flying instructors but you will be flying non-stop Air to Air against a selection of Navy Aggressor A-4s. So, if you have not flown much A-A recently this could be the thing for you with three campaigns set in different years with a selection of Jets to fly. The lesser striped A-4F Mongoose does not take prisoners -- great balls of cheese! The campaigns consist of: Campaign 1 1970 Select from the US Navy / Marines F-4B (1965), F-4B (1967) and F-4J to go up against A-4E aggressors. Campaign 2 1974 Select from the US Navy / Marines F-4J (1974) and F-4N to go up against A-4E aggressors. Campaign 3 1978 Fly the US Navy F-14A (1974) and go up against A-4F Mongoose aggressors. Oh yes and you need to try and survive 20 missions with only about 3 wingmen. Check your six or else an A-4 flown by such celebs as Viper and Jester will blow you out of the sky! The environment This is set over a reworked South West US Terrain and has a NAS Miramar runway layout like the real thing and some very nice looking features. Think Tactically So, as you can see you ideally want to avoid getting sucked into any turning fights and that also applies to the F-14A because the up-engined A-4F kinda cancels out the F-14s better turn ability. Keeping and supporting your AI wingman is a must and is key to dealing with the A-4 hoards and keeping your wingman alive is a must to complete the target of 20 missions. Your wingman is although not the most intelligent of pilots he is also vulnerable to your wayward sidewinder shots and general incompetence in issuing commands. If you have not flown the Mirage Factory F-14 the mod comes with, then there are a few different key presses for the radar and also advise learning how to use the radar (it helps!). Where'd Hollywood go man.......oh there he is - never never leave your wingman! We are the Mods The music it comes with is ace and (thank god) not a sign of “Lead me on” by Teena Marie. Those who had the soundtrack might still have flashbacks to some of the tracks on it. Anyway no need to touch the music or the terrain. I am using Starys SARCASM mod in this for environmental effects and also some Top Gun themed 1080 menu screens by Viper63a. The screens can be simply dragged into the Menu and Flight mod folders depending – also remembering to rename them to the correct file name so they show. You can of course change whatever else suits you for the environment you wish to replicate. Here Viper is telling me how my name will never be on the Top Gun trophy after losing all my wingmen in about 3 missions. Starting a campaign Important here suggest setting Campaign Difficulty as normal, and set Weapon Supply to Unlimited otherwise you will be down to AIM-9Bs by about mission 5. My first several campaigns had a distinct theme of running out of wingmen Do you think your name is going to be on the trophy? – You will need a lot more than ego to beat Viper and his souped up A-4 The F-14A took a while to get used to and best to use its advantages of radar with IFF. I have only used AIM-7Fs in these campaigns and do advise taking out the bad guys BVR if you can. With the F-4s you have less advantages but again playing to your strengths will allow you to prevail. Every now and then a cargo plane takes off on its flight to Hong Kong full of Rubber Dog s***. If you screw up just this much you might be on the next flight.

The soviet war literature is the same as the american. "We are the heros, the others are the dumb fools." An other thing were the military literature, which was intended to teach lessons to the new military generation. From tanks over planes to air defence. There were also analysis of different wars after WW2, from Korea to Falkland, and mostly without any idiological rubbish. Biographies would be also interessting. Pokryshkin, the soviet no 2 ace in WW2, wrote a very interesting one. Then there was a czech or slovak author. Franticek Faitle, who fought first in the RAF and then moved to the USSR and then was transfered into the area of slovak national rebellion to fight with La-5FN against the german Luftwaffe in Slovakia. JG52, eastern front. Staffel markings also are color coded (the numbers II/JG52 would have differing number colors from III/JG52, as well as Stab (think of that as the HQ flight) with the varying chevrons, lines, circles, dots, etc. LW markings is a whole seperate level of expertise; and there's a plethora of info availalbe. Thank you both. I knew if I asked here I'd get ideas. That's the type of stuff I'm looking for, MigBuster. Good solid interviews with these pilots from the other side. I've read accounts from Western sport pilots who own some of the aircraft, and I guess that's what started my quest. Often what they've said about them didn't match what had been said by past histories. For example, the Mig-15 bis. My reading has been confined a great deal to WW2 and prior. It's time for my old brain to catch up with the jet age, before I pack it in. Always find bits of time for more reading. I have to find Sergei Kramarenko's book, a great place to start. Oh, a million years ago, I read a statistic that 80% of German war effort went to the Eastern Front, up until the time Hitler transferred most of it to the west for the Bulge offensive. Has anyone else heard that?

Thank you, JosefK. I'll check it out. I'm interested in any accounts I can read from any of the nations that flew these aircraft. They're all just fighter jocks, after all. I hope more and more of their accounts will be translated, for poor single tongue speakers like myself. Czechs, Poles, East Germans, Egyptians, anyone who's flown them in a military setting. If anyone has leads to translated accounts, even just magazine articles, I'd love to hear of the connection.

I know. I'm trying to find out if Russian accounts have been translated. I'm hoping some have.

The very basic guide to ECM Jammers in SF2 Guide applies to ECM pods and aircraft with ECM supplied with the games and their supposed simplified implementation by ThirdWire. 1. Noise (Barrage) Jamming This is a brute force method of sending out a lot of RF waves to confuse enemy radars. The downsides of this are that it gives your position away and provides a good target for missiles using 'Home On Jam' (Some SA-2 models do use HOJ) * AN/ALQ-71 (QRC-160) External pod - Basic noise jammer - this will also interfere with your RHAW / RWR scope in game. Use - Don't rely on the jamming and always be aware what's coming for you. This pod is only of use against early model SA-2s. If you are flying high over Vietnam try to fly in with other flights for mutual protection. 2. Deceptive Jamming Provides false information to attacking radars - Probably does not present a target to HOJ missiles (Most powerful last) * AN/ALQ-51 Internal Jammer -Used on 1965 US Navy jets like F-4B(65), A-4C/E(65), A-6A, Early F-8s....etc * AN/ALQ-100 Internal Jammer - Used on 1967 US Navy and IDF jets F-4J, F-4B(67), A-7s, A-4F, late F-8(69s)....etc * AN/ALQ-126A Internal Jammer - A-4F(74) * EL/L-8230 Internal Jammer - F-4E Kurnass (78) * Unknown Israeli Internal Jammer - F-16A, KfirC2 * AN/ALQ-135 Internal Jammer - F-15A Use - Deceptive jamming in SF2 seems to be an effective method against all SAMs in SF2 - but still be prepared to look for any SAMs coming at you. Note: Some Soviet Jets like the MiG-23MLD and MiG-27 also use internal deceptive Jammers. 3. Dual mode Jamming This type uses both Noise and Deceptive Jamming (only 3rdWire knows how it is implemented!) (Most powerful last) * AN/ALQ-101 External pod * AN/ALQ-119 External pod * AN/ALQ-131 External pod Use - The ALQ-131 is the best pod to take against SA-6/SA-8s - but still be prepared to look for any SAMs coming at you. HOJ missiles might still go for these pods in game.
