1 pointWhen Thunder Rolled and Winds of Change - September 2021 It is with great excitement today we announce some updates and increasing momentum of the When Thunder Rolled Project. Perhaps the most significant news is a Leadership change. All founding members have approved the nomination and acceptance of a new Project Leader that has demonstrated the proficiency, commitment and quality demanded in this critical role. Leveraging his solid understanding of the Thirdwire sims, and recent leadership roles with other initiative including Operation Desert Storm, will set us up for greater success. With this change, we are expecting a surge in activity and progress which has us energized and excited. On a tactical level, our top focus/priority now continues to be on finalizing terrain work - creating incredibly accurate depictions of the Vietnam topography, cities/towns, airbases, enhanced terrain tiles (e.g., honoring requests for more rice paddies), etc. This terrain of course will serve as the foundation for everything else. We continue to excel in enhancing immersion and realism – leveraging outsourced professionals to help with creating dense jungle environments, realistic sky environments and more. These efforts are a cycle of ongoing experiments balancing how much we can push this old game engine and still maintain acceptable frame rates. We have also been making progress in many other areas such as creating realistically detailed target areas. For example, when you strike an enemy military storage area in WTR, we promise it won’t be a generic “Warehouse1” – see proof below! Next up on the target area list is creating a cluttered rail yard supporting Ed’s June 20, 1966 attack on the Railyard NorthEast of Kep Airfield. New models will include a marshalling yard with new train cars, rail yard support buildings, service equipment and more. Also noteworthy perhaps: while not formally adopted on the development roadmap but under consideration – we have received requests over the past few years regarding Yankee Air Pirate (YAP) compatibility. A majority of former YAP team members have already been involved with the WTR Project so this continues to be assessed and a greater possibility. Please enjoy the screenshots below; note these are lower res/compressed versions and representative of unedited actual gameplay. As always, we welcome and encourage community support. If you are interested in contributing, please send me a Private Message (PM). Finally, very special thanks to Erik for all his support and hosting our exclusive forum. Please feel free to share your thoughts and comments in this forum, thank you. An F-105 drops its payload over North Vietnam amidst heavy cloudy skies. Our brand new scratch F-100F; its dazzling bare metal skin catching the morning sun on an enemy air defense suppression (Wild Weasel) mission. Vivid Morning Skies over a small Vietnam Village lose their tranquility as enemy AAA chase after the contrails of an F-105 strike package (top right). Another brand new scratch model, this time showcasing the Mig-17 featuring an insane level of detail and perfect for you rivet counters. Rough inner coastal waters demonstrated by new water effects roll in to disrupt a peaceful beach. An NVA solider driving the SA-2 missile transporter takes a quick break along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Yet another new scratch model, the AH-1 Skyraider! Employing a low bomb pass this skillful pilot scores a direct hit on an enemy truck convoy just clearing a ridge along the Ho Chi Minh trail. The sheer beauty of Vietnam, rolling hills, lush jungles and colorful fields serve as a momentary distraction from the war. May 3, 1966. Ed Rasimus’ first recorded combat mission successfully strikes a Dong Hoi military storage area in Route Pack 1. Bonus Screenie: re-creation of YAP “JumpMyers” downed pilot rescue mission integrated with the WTR Project leveraging brand new Jolly Green helo model, rescue pilot, special effects, etc from:

1 pointThe bytes you are looking for in the Helopilot01.LOD are at offset FA, 10A and 11A. To reverse this LOD change the entry at FA from 803f to 80bf and the entry at 10A from 7f3f to 7fbf. The first change mirrors the figure, the second reverses him 180 degrees (if you don't do both the writing on his flak vest will be reversed in the sim). The reason why the offset address for these three entries if different is that the old Prop_Pilot.LOD has only two parts, named Pilot and Head, where the more complex Helopilot01.LOD has more (20). So the trick in reversing a pilot LOD is to look for these three entries (803f or sometimes 7f3f) on consecutive lines in your hex editor, and then edit them.

1 pointappreciate the offer currently working with Prop Pilot, although for the birds you can see into (cargo, not typically post WW2 bombers) could go with airline style and regular air force flight suit style with headphones for the one working the radios it actually doesnt need to be anything too fancy, as the pilots flying heavies dont usually wear a lot of survival gear like fighter and bomber crews and at game scales and most folks tendency to zoom in, the patches are too small to tell who they are ideal would be a set of five, one pilot configured with headphones, one pilot without, one facing port, one facing starboard, and one facing rear. the left right and rear folks should be positioned more like typing or reaching for a screen than as if flying. sorry, there arent too many good pics of flight engineers on the internet of 2021, these pics are more for general appearance of the uniform than anything else final note, tried changing values in the helopilot01 same as done with the Prop_Pilot i'd love to report that it flipped him to but there was no noticable change. so the address and/or values change up with each model. damn, i could hope

1 pointNo such thing an an invincible, or invulnerable Tank, Western Tanks, are more survivable than the Former Soviet, or current Russian Tanks, however, they are designed on two totally different tactical doctrines. The West, had envisioned an assault through the Fulda gap, and therefore developed its armour to counter this, ie, better command and control, better Infantry and air combined operations, the Russians/Warpac had one goal in mind, to get in, defeat, occupy and end the war, therefore their armour is faster, lower, and more numerous. Gunnery is another factor, with possibly the advantage going to NATO, as they needed accuracy and quality, that being said, the Russians, build bloody good kit, and, had the cold war gone hot, the outcome would have been awful, as tac nukes would have come into play, and sorry Gents, but no one wins that particular scenario. Anyhow, Russian Tanks are very good, as good as, if different from Western armour, yes they ergonomics can sometimes leave something to be desired, but, they worked, very well, did the job, and are still running in armies all around the world, not bad for 1960's/70's tech !! As a former Cold War Warrior, I am fully aware of how terrible a Soviet invasion would have been, my approximate life expectancy was 24 - 48 hours buying time until the US and NATO could pump bodies into the Theatre of ops. Also, another point, even the Israeli's used Soviet Tanks in the form of the Tiran, that speaks volumes in my book. However, ATGM's will kill pretty much ANY tank, be it Western or Eastern European in origin, so the argument is actually academic, as neither side really has a "better" Tank. To make a droll comment here, it aint the size that counts, it's the way one utilises it that really matters.

1 pointnothing is invincible, that being said western and eastern tanks were built differently and were meant to be used differently.one on one most eastern tanks were severe underdogs but used en mass in assaults they were effective.the main advantage the west had/has was flexibility of command and and control information dissemination and range/targeting advantages.in short term conflicts that would be a huge advantage. in a protracted slugging match wear and tear and attrition would even things out a bit and numbers would become an advantage.

1 pointI flew on a C141 in 2000 doing a deployment to Montana for a firefighting mission. I have to say I preferred the C130 better. I didn't jump but simply flew in it

1 pointMy 13 year old got into DCS this past October, so this was our Christmas break project. Don't judge the carpentry too harshly. All I own is skill saw, a jig saw, and a drill....and I'm a software guy.
