The problem with MiG-19s is that by the numbers, they were exceptional aircraft. Low drag, high power-to-weight. Then because of the swept wing (rather than a lower aspect ratio delta or trapezoidal used by Mach 2 fighters), it is inherently more agile, too. Compared to the MiG-21, it has only two weaknesses: top speed and stability/control at transonic/supersonic speeds. My question is this: if the MiG-19 was so good, why did the Soviets dump it like a hot potato in favor of the mostly inferior MiG-21? One big issue with the MiG-19 is Soviet service was that it was flat out dangerous. It could explode in mid flight. Pilots hated it. Also, the USSR, like the USA, was bitten by the speed is life bug and also needed to potentially intercept supersonic bombers, so the MiG-21 was the better short range/high altitude interceptor. Consider the fact that China kept the MiG-19 and derivatives of it operational for decades. They worked out the kinks and thought it was a great platform. But look at its combat record in Vietnam. The MiG-19 was only used in small numbers, so you can't draw very good conclusions. But I will say this, despite having fantastic performance, the Vietnamese pilots didn't care for the MiG-19 very much, or more correctly, the Chinese copies they were flying. Some Vietnamese pilots preferred the agility and guns of the MiG-17, others loved the ability to use MiG-21s to engage and disengage at will with quick Atoll shots on unsuspecting and/or overloaded F-4s and F-105s. Like the USSR, the VPAF found the MiG-19 unreliable. But it was MiG-19s that got Major Bob Lodge, who otherwise most likely would have been the first US ace of the war. They got him because of their tactics and his target fixation, not because of the MiG-19's performance. At the same time, the only supersonic gun kill in history was by an F-4 against a MiG-19. If the MiG-19 was such a fantastic fighter, why didn't it make an impact in the Arab-Israeli wars? First: Israel tended to knock out enemy fighters with pre-emptive strikes while they were sitting on the ground. Second: the one time they were caught with their pants down in 1973, SAMs were the star of the show and the first line fighters were MiG-21s. Many would argue that Arab pilots were not skilled, but if you study the records of both sides, you will find that Egypt had decent pilots, but they were hamstrung by Soviet equipment performance limitations (such as incredibly short range/endurance) and doctrine on top of the exceptionally good planning, training, skill, and luck of the IAF. In DCS World, the flight model is theoretically exceptionally accurate. The F-5E in a 1 vs 1 is essentially helpless against a properly flown MiG-19PF. The MiG-19 is able to turn better, climb better, and accelerate better. The MiG-21bis is only competitive with afterburner. But continuous use of afterburner kills the endurance of the MiG-21. As the MiG-19 is not commonly flown on multiplayer servers, people who know how to fly them can be very successful since almost no one knows how exceptional their ACM performance can be. My conclusion about MiG-19 performance is that flight sims do not properly reflect the problems that kept the MiG-19 from being a popular and successful fighter in reality. In flight sims, a MiG-19 with an accurate flight model IS supposed to be a UFO compared to its contemporaries and even much later aircraft until the advent of the US "teen" series fighters. In much the same way the MiG-17 was a problem in Vietnam, the MiG-19 should have been a problem for "teen" fighters until AMRAAM and the AIM-9L/M/X missiles become common. So, maybe China had the right idea to continue using it in parallel with MiG-21 derivatives. But if flight sims modeled the problems that MiG-19s really had and if you only had one life to lose in flight sims, most people wouldn't fly the MiG-19 despite its UFO performance, because no one wants to fly an aircraft that has a better chance of killing you than the enemy. Now, as it applies to Strike Fighters series games: AI don't use the hard flight model. If you plug in the correct performance numbers for the MiG-19, it will still be a UFO, partly because it really was the good and partly because of the way the AI flight model works. I can say that a skilled pilot flying the MiG-19 in SFP1/WoX mutliplayer was essentially unbeatable by any other aircraft until a patch crippled the MiG-19 a little bit and turned the F-8 Crusader into a magic UFO that could beat all other aircraft. One fact to consider is that in flight sims, focused on the player, 1 vs 1 performance is everything. But in reality, the slightly inferior F4F beat the hell out of the A6M Zero once US pilots learned how to fly as a team. In DCS World, a lone F-5E has little chance against an AI MiG-19 with high pilot quality. But with two player flown F-5Es vs two AI MiG-19s, the odds go in favor of the players if they use good tactics... except that the AI flight model and gunnery skill is even worse in DCS World than it is in SF series games, so sometimes you just can't beat them even if you properly execute the correct tactics. Overall, in SF series games, I never found it necessary to mod the AI enemies. I understood how the AI was flying and could generally beat them. It was actually pleasant to see the AI do something unexpected and beat me every now and then. I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to make the MiG-19 FM better, because the AI doesn't really use the full FM. Learn the vulnerability of the AI's tactics and exploit it, then the FM won't matter as much. SF AI is predominately horizontal turning tactics. Creative use of the vertical, rolling scissors, and "Top Gun" movie style sudden slow down tactics can beat just about any AI no matter how good their flight model is.

The sun was already up and it was shaping to be a beautiful summer morning in the Med when we were launched as the Alert 5. As we climbed to altitude the controller aboard the E-2C briefed us on the developing situation.. A Libyan Arab Airlines scheduled flight from Benghazi to Damascus had turned left instead of right on clearing Libyan airspace and was now heading west, apparently towards Malta. Was it a hijack, a defection or something else? Our orders were to close in on the airliner and try to find out.. After a few minutes the situation worsened. The airliner wasn't responding to Libyan ATC instructions to return to course or to turn south, back to Libya, and two MiG-25s had been launched in pursuit.. The Hawkeye was trying to put us in between the MiGs and the Airbus, but the Soviet built fighters had picked up speed and the angles were all wrong. Then suddenly we heard an urgent call from the controller on the E-2C. 'He's firing a missile!' The Hawkeye controller was now broadcasting on Guard for the Airbus to take evasive action as the Libyan AA-6 began to track the airliner.. We were cleared to engage and I snapped out the orders, 'I'll take the lead. Two you engage the trailer' We both called Fox 3 as our AIM-54s arced up to track on the Foxbats.. But there was a problem with our missile. 'Looks like we're being spoofed' called my RIO. 'I've lost lock and so has the missile.' I switched to HEAT and went for a lock with my Sidewinders but we were still just out of range. In my headphones I could hear my wingman call Fox 3 and then Fox 1 in quick succession. Another Phoenix and then a Sparrow? Was he having trouble locking on too? After interminable seconds I finally got a Sidewinder lock and called Fox 2, but way too soon there were not one but two explosions and smoke trails ahead.. My wingman had killed both MiGs with his AIM-54 shots! Although his AIM-7 and my AIM-9 would hit the burning targets in the next few seconds they were both already out of the fight. But what about the Airbus? Had it survived the Libyan missile attack? I called the Hawkeye and rolled onto a course towards the airliner. He had radically changed course and altitude, causing the AA-6 to waste fuel and time trying to manoeuvre onto him until it lost lock when the launch aircraft was destroyed. We picked up the airliner at low level south-east of Malta... It didn't answer our calls, but made a single call to ATC at Luqa, Malta that it was commencing a straight in approach and ambulances should meet it as there were wounded aboard. I crossed to the other side of the airliner to give it room as it commenced it's landing run into Luqa, which had already cleared all traffic in anticipation.. We watched it all the way down to the runway.. Then it was back to the boat via a tanker and home in time for breakfast. Maybe we'd read what happened on the airliner in tomorrow's papers...

It's a complete and correct speech pack, unlike many others with random words in Russian, German and so on. The second best speech pack is the Arabic one still in the works by GKABS, it's an exclusive for ODS 30AE at the moment. Alright, I look forward to prepare the Vietnamese speech pack with tweaks for SF2 and upload it with credits to the real authors, maybe next month. Now I got issues with RL that take priority.

View File Coastal Range Hi!! Well, here it goes: This is my firs attempt to creat a terrain. The idea is to have a "realistic" terrain, with army bases, docks, shipping and truck routes, etc. to practice A2G missions, anti-ship, carrier take off and landing, you name it I have included many ground objects and 3rd party mods, and I would like to thank the following: Wrench, for I have borrowed ground objects from his great Libya Terrain (barbed wire, Soviet Freighter, factory building, helicopters, pillbox) and for his airbase goodies. Stary, for his realistic and gorgeous GermanyCE tiles. They look great!!! Piecemeal, I borrowed some layouts from his awesome DesertV4 terrain. Rends, I borrowed some ground objects from his Germany CE terrain. Krfrge, I took a look at his combat outpost and artillery firebase, and used them as a basis to create some. Kesselbrut, I have included some ships he has created (trawler, tug) Rover and Gepard for your terrain building tutorials, they have been very valuable to me!!! PureBlue for his Airfield Development kit and those who worke to contribute to it: Sundowner: B_Trailer_Mk82, M_trailer, B_TrailerLGB, Y_Tractor, RAF_Cart, B_Duel_Y_Trac, C_Type, RAF_Bunker, TAB_Vee, HAS_M, HAS_E, c_store, Earth Walls, mounds, blast walls and all desert variants of these objects Amokfloo: ControlTower, ForkLift, FireExtinguisher, ShelterZu Ravenclaw: Fire Trucks Stary: str_hangars 1 thru 8 Pureblue: FloodLight, SmallGenerator, ConcreteBlock, SunShelter, HeliPad1N Polak: tools Polak and the CFS Midway Group for their object Library 1. Julhelm for his Factory Buildings. Sundowner, for his Airfield objects. Wingwiner for his gas station and control tower. Mue for his great Target Area Editor, I have used it extensively. Gerwin for his TFD Tool, very useful, specially for last-minute terrain modifications Gepard, for his Marxwalde Air Base, included in his 10 new air base mod. And finally, many many thanks to the CombatAce Community, you guys have always helped me in time of need! If I there's anyone that was no tincluded and needs to, please let me know!! You'll need to download the following: http://http://combatace.com/files/file/3667-false/ http://combatace.com/files/file/6043-false http://combatace.com/files/file/12751-lha-mod-for-stock-sf2na-version/ http://combatace.com/files/file/11448-gaz-66-6x6-trucks-for-sf2-series/ It was tested on a full-merged SF2 install, including SF2 NA. Although it may work on non-NA installs, it is required for the missions tht I'll upload soon. I hope you like it!!! Ignacioc91 Submitter ignacioc91 Submitted 10/11/2015 Category Full Terrains

Flew two missions with good results but paid a heavy price on the second one. First one was a recce over Vihn. Not much to speak about other than finding two spots by the hills due west off the water that need to be worked over. Came in from the back side upriver and dropped some CBUs on the POL tanks and dodged AAA out over the water. The next one was a doozy. Was up with Chip Wilkerson to hit the power plant at Uong Bi. Everything seemed rather routine as went feet dry west of the target at 12,000ft. Plan was coast in, turn west and come in behind Phantom ridge, and swing in for the attack. And that's pretty much what happened except for some really serious MIG activity in the area. We knew they were up in force but figured they would be busy down below. and that's pretty much what happened until one came up just as we were set to begin our attack. Down we went and the MIG (a MIG21) came after us and got Chip with what has to be the flukiest, lucky missile shot ever, according to what the fighter jocks described in their ready room. I could only hope that the MIG pilot would be happy with a single kill and avoid the flak, but he was intent on bagging me as well. For my part, i knew exactly what i was going to do. Seeing as the plan was to swing back over the ridge and head east for the water, i figured i'd take this guy back towards the high ground away from the AAA, which was pretty damn stiff, and i know he probably had a bit of trouble seeing exactly which way i would go due to all the jinking. Well, it was over quicker than i ever would have thought. I know coming off the target i broke hard opposite direction to avoid the ground fire so that must have stymied him. As i jinked around some more heading for the ridge, he opened up the range some to allow himself some room to work with. All the time, i was jinking to the NE i had a good idea what he would do and had sight of him. As he set and began coming in, i whipped the aircraft around and hoped for one of two things...a 12 O'clock shot or failing that, reversing hard and seeing if i couldn't get a good setup on him seeing as he's out of his aircraft's element and fully within mine. And that's how it turned out to be. We came near head on with him coming down shooting and i just about pulled the stick out whipping the Spad around as he whipped on by. There was only so much he could do seeing as he was heading straight for the ridge. As he pulled up hard towards the left, the MIG mushed and i had about as good a chance as i was going to get. Pulled lead and gave it three good bursts and whoopie dee, his vertical stabilizer came off! Got one hell of a MIG kill! Soon after i was over the ridge and set course out of there and back home.

you really need to check out the WorldWar series by Harry Turtledove first four books cover an alien invasion during World War 2. per the recon drones they sent and had radio back, they were expecting mediaval knights. second part covers the peace in the 1960s, just as the colonization ships start arriving. and yes, its amazing to see what people do with the alien tech they had captured two decades ago or bought/stolen/traded for in the years since final book sees humanity matching then overtaking the aliens within the same book (technically 20 year span, though only a couple are really covered) only distinct spoiler is the alien races shock to see a human spacecraft over their homeworld. armed with nukes "for self defense"

I've been wanting to get back into some of the WW1 air war board games (I played Richthofen' War a lot in my earlier years) , and I've recently gathered a few more I want to try. Unfortunately, my wife's cats make game play bit of an issue. I have a small collection of Wings of Glory models, joined the kickstarter for Age of Dogfights, and picked up a copy of Knights of the Air. There are also some Print and Play games out there.

I did think about extending the hook by numbers, rather than physically. I noticed in the readme that you said you'd tried everything, so I was just checking. Here's the thing: I actually did a full arrest trap. She bounced around a bit, but she was hooked and came to a full stop way before the end of the superstructure. That was when I was carrying full fuel. But that was also when I was on a slant deck carrier. Which may have had higher wires, and certainly had them grouped further along the deck. The tyre marks on the straight deck are very near the end of the aft deck, so you have to get in early Since I enjoy flying the aircraft, enjoy bombing, enjoy putting 20mm into MiGs and watching them explode, and enjoy carrier traps, I will learn to enjoy trying different techniques to trap on the straight deck. PS: As per readme advice, I just downloaded the Ticonderoga

Yes I have Dawn Patrol. I had the map scanned and printed larger. I sometimes use that for Wings of Glory scenarios. I have lots of Wings of Glory miniatures, mostly WWI with 20 or so WWII planes together with the Battle of Britain set. I also have the last Blue Max boxed version. I have Sails of Glory and 60 ship miniatues and have just ordered Oak & iron core set. I am lucky enough to have 3 friends with similar interests and we meet up once a week for a game. Unfortunately they do not like anything other than WWI Wings of Glory so for the time being Nelson stays in hix box.

Because these numbers don't seem real to the vast legions of science-denying people that continue to spout the same nonsensical line as "proof" that we are alone in the universe: "IF there's someone else out there, why haven't we heard from them?' There is absolutely no conception of the distances involved in that statement. They're just numbers to many people, and being mathematically challenged to begin with, the figures don't translate into anything they can understand. And sadly, these same vast legions have no desire to learn or understand any of this. If they did, they would realize their beliefs about their place in the universe was BS from the word "GO", and as one former work acquaintance put it, "If I let myself believe any of that, it would make me feel insignificant".

Until I had to move in a hurry and didn't have room to store my games any more, I had nearly every board game/miniature rules set ever sold covering air combat at a 1:1 scale from WW1 to Modern. I didn't have time to give them away or sell them, so I just took them to work and threw them in a dumpster. I didn't have TSR's Dawn Patrol, but I did have their release of Air War (a modern jet game originally published by SPI). I did have several WW1 games/miniatures rules. My favorite WW1 game was the Nova Game Designs' Ace of Aces series. Each player used a book that showed photos or drawings of aircraft from various ranges/angles and the combination of the chosen maneuvers determined which page each player turned to. It was fast and fun, anyone could play with very little training. Yet, it was almost like playing a flight sim because you didn't waste any time plotting moves or take turns on a map. The most complex rivaled Air War in its attempt to model the physics of flight: Avalon Hill's Knights of the Air. The closest I had to Dawn Patrol was GDW's Blue Max. I can't remember the names of the WW1 miniatures rules that I had. The only air combat game I ever got any friends to play on a regular basis was Avalon Hill's Air Force/Dauntless series for WW2 (originally published by Battleline). It was fairly easy to learn to play and used pre-plotted moves. The Avalon Hill version had colorful, attractive aircraft data cards that turned boring tables of numbers into colorful bar charts that were curved to somewhat resemble instruments. Only a handful of people ever tried my more complex jet games, like Air War, GDW's Air Superority/Air Strike series that morphed onto Clash of Arms Speed of Heat series. Avalon Hill's Flight Leader was a much simpler jet combat game that anyone could play like Air Force/Dauntless. Despite its simplicity and speed of play, it was almost as realistic as the other games with combat results comparing well with historical results. If you want the ultimate tactical air combat game, it is Birds of Prey. Tony Valle, a long time Air Superiority fan, also has a PhD and wrote pc simulations. He came up with a nomograph solution for board game flight modeling that allows players to fly the aircraft almost as realistically as a PC flight sim with the game turns taking no longer than the older complex sims and only requiring the ability to add and subtract. It is a jet era game. The time/distance scale doesn't have sufficient resolution to handle WW2 fighters very well and can't even come close to modeling ultra slow WW1 biplanes. It is an amazing achievement and represents what I was hoping to find when I bought all of those other games and miniatures rules. Unfortunately, there aren't many people who actually own and play it. I have no interest in playing online/by email and I don't know anyone who will play face to face. As it stands, in the time it took for someone to develop the best possible game mechanics for dogfighting, PC simulations became the best way to get that kind of experience and with the advent of VR, I have little interest in studying and applying board game rules when I can feel like I am really flying inside any kind of airplane I choose from WW1 to the present. But if someone near Orlando, FL was actually interested in playing tabletop air combat games face-to-face, I would be interested in doing so.
